A controversy has erupted after a video of students in UP walking the ramp in burqas went viral on social media

A fashion show featuring students wearing burqas at a Muzaffarnagar college has sparked a debate, with a Muslim body urging the institution to apologise.
NDTV reported that the Jamiat Ulama objected to students walking the ramp in burqas and said that it is a piece of cloth to cover the body and not meant for fashion.&nbsp;
The college has however backed the students.&nbsp;
The controversy surrounding the Shri Ram College fashion show in Muzaffarnagar started after a video of the event went viral. The three-day event, named Fashion Splash, featured students showcasing both Western and traditional attire.&nbsp;
Jamiat Ulama's district convener Maulana Mukarram Qasmi has accused the college of targeting a religion and warned of legal action if it does not apologise.&nbsp;
Students who took part in the event said that they were trying to showcase 'unity in diversity' along with their creativity

Four engineering students of a Karnataka college have been suspended for allegedly ridiculing the burqa while dancing to Bollywood songs at a college event.

The college authorities, as per an Indian Express report, suspended&nbsp; the four boys after netizens called their dance moves 'obscene' saying that the group was mocking the burqa.

College principal Dr Sudhir M claimed that the students from the Muslim community performed voluntarily and their dance was not part of their listed programs.
In a statement, the college management reportedly distanced itself from the incident saying that they do not support any activity that could harm the harmony between communities.
The report added that an inquiry is pending against the students.

The order follows last year's referenedum in the country that had sought a burqa ban supported by about 51.2 per cent voters. The move however was branded as Islamaphobic by critics.
Ban proponents, mostly right-wingers say that &nbsp;face coverings &nbsp;symbolize extremism, and should not be adhered to. The latest draft does not mention Islam categorically, and is reportedly aimed at stopping 'violent protesters' from wearing masks.
