The Reserve Bank of India has paused its rate-cut cycle and retained the repo rate at 5.25% in its latest policy review, citing geopolitical risks, low inflation, and currency pressures.

After a 25 basis point rate cut in December, the RBI on Friday decided to pause on the policy rate front amid geopolitical uncertainties.&nbsp;
This is the first monetary policy review after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the Budget for financial year 2026-27.
Announcing the sixth and final bi-monthly monetary policy for the current fiscal, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has decided to retain short-term lending rate or repo rate at 5.25 per cent with a neutral stance.
The rate cut pause comes on the back of the CPI-based headline retail inflation ruling below the 2 per cent lower band mandated by the government for the last four months. The central bank has been tasked by the government to ensure that consumer price index (CPI) based retail inflation remains at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side.
Since February 2025, the RBI has reduced the policy rate by 125 basis points. In its previous policy review in December, it had trimmed the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.25 per cent.
Based on the recommendation of the MPC, the RBI reduced the repo rate by 25 bps each in February, 2025 and April, and 50 basis points in June amidst easing retail inflation. However, the central bank halted its rate cut in August.
In the last MPC meeting, the RBI again went for reduction in repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.25 per cent. India's retail inflation dropped to a historic low of 0.25 per cent in October 2025, marking the lowest level since the CPI series was introduced.
Besides, the Indian economy has clocked better-than-expected GDP growth of 8.2 per cent in the second quarter. As per the government estimate, India's economy is estimated to grow at 7.4 per cent during the ongoing financial year.
However, the rupee declined to historic low and crossed 92 against a dollar last week making imports costlier, raising fears of rise in inflation. Rupee has depreciated by about 6 per cent in calendar year 2025.

Sustaining a 7-8 per cent economic growth is the government's top priority, as it will benefit all citizens and create more jobs, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said.
In an interaction with college students from different regions of the country on Sunday, after the presentation of the Union Budget 2026-27, Sitharaman said if economic growth is good, its fruits will reach all citizens.
"And that is why growth is the primary priority. Sustain it at that level, the world's-fastest growing economy, we need to be at that level of 7 per cent, 8 per cent growth. So everything that I do will have to be for sustaining that growth," the minister said.
She said economic growth create jobs, bring more people into workforce and more productivity.
Sitharaman further said employers are increasingly recognising the value women bring to the workforce due to their efficiency and precision. This is reflected in the rising number of women in semi-skilled roles.
However, there remains concern about the limited representation of women in boardrooms, she said, adding that more women need to rise to leadership positions to influence decision-making and serve as role models for others. While progress has been made, more needs to be done, she said.
The minister informed the students that since the last budget, the government has consistently ensured policies, funding and support for the Orange Economy (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics sector).
"Today, even television media depends on such creative inputs. It is a bright sector with many avenues. Creativity is challenged every day, and if you have the aptitude, this is definitely an area worth pursuing," she said.
The minister also informed the students about the steps involved in budget preparations.
She said the budget preparation begins in late October or November with consultations involving industry groups, businesses, economists, trade unions, and interest groups, alongside public inputs via social media.
The suggestions are shortlisted, discussed with concerned ministries and states, and refined for feasibility and implementation.
After multiple reviews and drafting rounds, the budget speech is finalised, Sitharaman said.

India's budget demonstrates the ongoing commitment to maintaining macro stability through a gradual path of government debt reduction balanced against a still-robust capex program to enhance growth prospects, Fitch Ratings said on Monday.
While the budget did not flag specific large-scale reform announcements, Fitch said it expects more reforms to be forthcoming, particularly on the deregulation agenda.
Strong GDP growth is driving positive momentum in several of India's sovereign credit metrics and, if sustained, could improve the credit profile over time, even as lingering fiscal challenges remain, it said.
Building on recent reform momentum should help accelerate private investment and give greater upside and resilience to India's potential growth, Fitch added.
It said fiscal consolidation is set to be very modest with the fiscal deficit target at 4.3 per cent of GDP in FY27, just a touch below 4.4 per cent in FY26. "The slowing pace of consolidation is in line with our view that further progress on deficit reduction is becoming more difficult without compromising more on GDP growth," Fitch said.
The government opted to keep capex spending relatively stable at 3.1 per cent of FY27 GDP rather than pursue a greater degree of consolidation. This likely reflects an effort to offset lagging private investment.
"India's budget demonstrates the ongoing commitment to maintaining macro stability through a gradual path of government debt reduction balanced against a still-robust capex program to enhance growth prospects," Fitch Ratings Director and Primary Sovereign Analyst Jeremy Zook said in a note.
Fitch forecasts FY27 growth at 6.4 per cent. The continued emphasis on capex spending should be supportive of both near and medium-term prospects.
"A lengthening record of fiscal credibility should help strengthen India's credit profile, particularly as it has come amid greater fiscal transparency and improved spending quality. Although the overall fiscal deficit is still higher than pre-pandemic levels, this reflects stronger capex spending, as the revenue deficit is narrower than pre-pandemic levels &mdash; even including previously off-budget spending," it said.
Still, general government deficits, debt, and interest payments all remain elevated compared to peers and are only declining gradually, Fitch added.

The government on Sunday raised the limit for passengers bringing duty-free imported goods into India from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000.
Under the Baggage Rules, 2026, notified on Sunday, a resident or a tourist of Indian origin arriving in India other than by land shall be allowed duty-free clearance of articles up to Rs 75,000, if such articles are carried on the person or in the bona fide accompanied baggage of the passenger.
The new Baggage Rules, 2026, come into effect from midnight on February 2 and replace a decade-old baggage rule.
A tourist of foreign origin, not being an infant, arriving in India shall be allowed duty-free clearance of articles up to the value of Rs 25,000. This limit was Rs 15,000 under the Baggage Rules, 2016.
In the case of a resident or tourist of Indian origin residing abroad for more than one year, on return to India, duty-free clearance of jewellery will be allowed up to a weight of 40 grams if brought by a female passenger. The limit will be 20 grams if brought by anyone other than a female passenger in bona fide baggage.
For the purpose of this rule, jewellery means articles of adornment ordinarily worn by a person, made of gold, silver, platinum, or other precious metals, whether studded or not.

India has not allocated funds for the Chabahar port project in Iran in the Union Budget for 2026-27 and has halved the development assistance for Bangladesh to Rs 60 crore, reflecting frosty bilateral ties.
Bhutan has been allocated the largest share -- Rs 2,288 crore -- as development aid, followed by Rs 800 crore to Nepal and Rs 550 crore each to the Maldives and Mauritius.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been given a total of Rs 22,118 crore as against the current fiscal's budget estimate of Rs 20,516 crore and revised estimate of Rs 21,742 crore.
For the next fiscal, the allocation for Bangladesh has been pegged at Rs 60 crore. While the budget allocation to Bangladesh for 2025-26 was Rs 120 crore, the revised estimate put the amount at Rs 34.48 crore.
In a departure from the last few years, no allocation has been made for the Chabahar port project. In last year&rsquo;s budget, Rs 100 crore was set aside for the port project, which was increased to Rs 400 crore in the revised estimate.
India has been making an annual outlay of Rs 100 crore to the mega connectivity project in Iran&rsquo;s Sistan-Balochistan province over the last several years.
In September last year, the US imposed economic sanctions on Iran but granted India a six-month exemption for the Chabahar port project. The waiver will end on April 26.
The Chabahar port is being developed by India and Iran to boost connectivity and trade ties and to serve as a key part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
The total overseas development partnership portfolio for 2025-26 under the MEA has been pegged at Rs 6,997 crore, which is over 31 per cent of the ministry&rsquo;s total allocation.
Out of this amount, Rs 4,548 crore has been earmarked for immediate neighbours. The funds will support projects ranging from large infrastructure works to community-level development initiatives.
According to revised estimates for 2025-26, Bhutan was allocated Rs 1,950 crore.
In continuation of India&rsquo;s special relationship with Afghanistan, an allocation of Rs 150 crore has been made for 2026-27, compared to Rs 100 crore in 2025-26.
Sri Lanka has been allocated Rs 400 crore, while Myanmar will receive Rs 300 crore.
The total assistance for Latin American countries in the 2026-27 budget has been pegged at Rs 120 crore.

Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty dived sharply by nearly 2 per cent on Sunday after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed a hike in the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on derivatives.
Reversing the early gains, the 30-share BSE Sensex plunged by 2,370.36 points or 2.88 per cent to slide below the 80,000-mark at 79,899.42 in afternoon trade after the announcement of a hike in STT on futures contracts to 0.05 per cent from 0.02 per cent.
The barometer later settled at 80,722.94, down 1,546.84 points or 1.88 per cent. The 50-share NSE Nifty tanked 495.20 points or 1.96 per cent to settle at 24,825.45. During the day, it tumbled 748.9 points or 2.95 per cent to 24,571.75.
Stock exchanges held a special Budget Day trading session on Sunday in view of the budget presentation for the next financial year.
"Market unease is centred on the increase in STT on F&amp;O, particularly the sharper hike on futures," said Pranav Haridasan, MD and CEO, Axis Securities. He noted that higher capital gains taxes last year had already raised transaction costs.
Futures are a margined, risk-managed product and not typically the main source of retail excess, raising questions on whether higher STT will deliver the desired outcome or weigh on liquidity and participation, Haridasan added.
From the 30 Sensex firms, State Bank of India tanked 5.61 per cent, while Adani Ports lost 5.53 per cent. Bharat Electronics, ITC, Tata Steel, UltraTech Cement and Reliance Industries were among the laggards.
Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Sun Pharma and Titan were the gainers.
Among indices, BSE PSU Bank fell the most by 5.60 per cent, followed by metal, commodities, energy, capital goods, utilities, industrials and power. IT and BSE Focused IT were the top gainers.
On the BSE, 2,375 stocks declined, 1,759 advanced and 175 remained unchanged.
"The increase in STT is likely to act as a marginal negative for foreign portfolio investor flows in the near term," said Aakash Shah of Choice Equity Broking.
Foreign institutional investors bought equities worth Rs 2,251.37 crore on Friday, according to exchange data.
"The proposed increase in STT is a dampener in the short term but may augur well in the long run," said HDFC Securities MD and CEO Dhiraj Relli.
Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments said the Budget supports sectors affected by global trade tariffs and focuses on emerging areas such as data centres, semiconductors, biopharma and manufacturing, while also helping MSMEs and traditional sectors.
However, he noted that low expectations, limited outlays and the STT hike triggered a knee-jerk negative market reaction.
Asian and European markets were closed on Sunday due to holidays, while US markets ended lower on Friday.
Raj Gaikar of SAMCO Securities said higher transaction costs could reduce volumes, dampen momentum and impact liquidity, creating pressure on broking firms, exchanges and AMCs.
Ponmudi R of Enrich Money said initial optimism faded quickly as investors digested higher transaction costs and the lack of strong measures to revive foreign inflows.
On Friday, the Sensex declined 296.59 points to 82,269.78, while the Nifty fell 98.25 points to 25,320.65.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents her ninth consecutive Union Budget, focusing on investments, growth, and election-bound states while honouring Tamil Nadu weaving traditions.

Draped in a purple Kanjivaram saree with golden checks and a coffee brown border featuring intricate thread work, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman honoured the weaving traditions of her poll-bound home state of Tamil Nadu as she presented a record ninth consecutive Union Budget in the Lok Sabha on Sunday.
Sitharaman's 85-minute speech, described as "historic and futuristic" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, began with the invocation of Guru Ravidas and the "sacred occasion of Magh Purnima", but maintained a business-like approach throughout.
The Budget speech was devoid of any poetic flourishes or references to cultural icons such as Thiruvalluvar or Basavanna and focused entirely on investments, growth, and the occasional, but not so explicit, mention of election-bound states.
At the end of the speech, Congress members from Kerala, which goes to the polls in April, were on their feet claiming that their state was ignored by the finance minister.
"Our government, led by hon'ble prime minister Modi, has decisively and consistently chosen action over ambivalence, reform over rhetoric and people over populism," Sitharaman said.
BJP members were seen thumping their desks after every few minutes as Sitharaman delivered her speech, but opposition members appeared unimpressed, with some remarking that they were unsure what the brouhaha was about.
This was the first Budget to be prepared at Kartavya Bhavan, the new office of the finance ministry, which was earlier housed in the North Block.
Just before the Lok Sabha convened for the day, members ambled into the chamber for the Sunday Budget presentation, exchanging greetings. BJP MP Rajkumar Chahar was seen taking selfies with fellow party members.
Several BJP leaders and ministers were also seen gathered around Home Minister Amit Shah, exchanging notes. DMK leader K Kanimozhi briefly walked up to Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for a short chat.
On the opposition benches, several members gathered around NCP-SP member Supriya Sule to offer condolences over the death of her cousin and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in an air crash on January 28.
Congress members Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Hibi Eden, Tariq Anwar, along with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, RJD MP Misa Bharti, RSP member N K Premachandran, among others, were seen speaking to Sule.
Prime Minister Modi was greeted with chants of "Bharat Mata ki Jai", "Vande Mataram" and "Har Har Mahadev", which were countered by slogans of "Jai Samvidhan" from the opposition benches.
After the Budget presentation, Sitharaman was congratulated by the prime minister as well as fellow ministers and party leaders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday described the Budget 2026-27 as "ambitious" and "futuristic", stressing that it will further strengthen India's global role.&nbsp;
He said India&rsquo;s 140 crore citizens are not satisfied with being the fastest-growing economy and the nation is determined to soon become the world's third-largest economy.
In his televised post-budget comments on the Budget, presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha, Modi said this was a unique budget, which focused on reducing fiscal deficit and controlling inflation while simultaneously ensuring high capital expenditure and high growth.
"This Budget strengthens India's global role anew. India's 140 crore citizens are not satisfied with being the fastest-growing economy, and the nation is determined to soon become the world's third-largest economy," he said.
The prime minister emphasised that this is the collective resolve of millions of Indians. He said India&rsquo;s role as a trusted democratic partner and quality supplier is continuously expanding. He underlined that recent major trade deals India has undertaken are aimed at ensuring maximum benefits for youth and small and medium enterprises, with significant steps taken in this Budget to advance that direction.
"Today's Budget is historic and reflects the empowered spirit of the nation's women. This budget is ambitious and addresses the aspirations of the nation," he said. Modi congratulated the finance minister and her team for presenting a "futuristic" and "sensitive" budget that is dedicated to the welfare of villages, the poor and farmers.
He highlighted that Sitharaman, as a woman finance minister, has set a new record by presenting the country's budget for the ninth consecutive time. The prime minister said the Budget is a highway of immense opportunities, fulfilling present dreams and strengthening the foundation of India's bright future.
He emphasised that the Budget will serve as the basis for India&rsquo;s high flight towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. Modi noted that the Reform Express on which India is riding will gain new energy and momentum through this budget.
He underlined that the path-breaking reforms provide aspiring, courageous, and talented youth with an open sky to soar. The Budget realises the vision of trust-based governance and a human-centric economic framework.
Modi said the Budget presents an ambitious roadmap to accelerate Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat campaigns with unprecedented support to sunrise sectors. These include the BioPharma Shakti Mission, Semiconductor Mission 2.0, Electronic Component Manufacturing Scheme, creation of a Rare Earth Corridor, strengthening critical minerals sector, new schemes in the textile sector, promotion of high-tech tool manufacturing, and preparation of champion MSMEs.
He added that the support extended to MSMEs, including small and cottage industries, will empower them to grow from local to global.
"The Budget takes several major steps to strengthen infrastructure, including a dedicated freight corridor, expansion of waterways across the country, a high-speed rail corridor, special focus on tier-2 and tier-3 cities, and promotion of municipal bonds to provide stronger economic foundations for cities," he said.
Modi stressed that all these measures will accelerate the journey towards a developed India. "The greatest capital of any nation is its citizens, and in recent years the government has made unprecedented investments to enhance their capabilities," he said, adding that continuous efforts have been made to strengthen skill, scale and sustainability.
Reiterating Sitharaman's statement that this is a youth power budget, Modi emphasised that the provisions made will prepare leaders, innovators, and creators across sectors. He noted that through the establishment of medical hubs, allied health professionals, promotion of the 'Orange Economy' including audio-visuals, encouragement of gaming, tourism and the Khelo India Mission, new opportunities will open for the youth.
He also said that a major tax concession has been announced to make India the world's data centre hub. Modi stated that this budget will give a significant boost to employment generation.
The prime minister expressed happiness that concrete steps have been taken to promote tourism, particularly in the Northeast, and that the foundation of balanced development has been strengthened by empowering different states.
Highlighting that more than 10 crore women are associated with self-help groups, he said the budget prioritises building a modern ecosystem for women-led and women-run self-help groups, with the aim that every household welcomes prosperity. He noted that the campaign to build new hostels for girl students in every district will make education more accessible.
Modi stressed that agriculture, dairy, and fisheries have always been given the highest priority by the government. He pointed out that in this Budget, important measures have been taken for farmers engaged in the production of coconut, cashew, cocoa, and sandalwood.
The Bharat Vistaar AI tool will greatly help farmers by providing information in their own language. He added that promoting entrepreneurship in fisheries and animal husbandry will create more employment and self-employment opportunities in villages.

The overall defence budget has seen a hike of 15 per cent over last year's outlay. Out of the total allocation, Rs 2,19,306 crore has been earmarked for capital expenditure to the armed forces, largely including purchasing new weapons, aircraft, warships, and other military hardware.
The capital outlay is over Rs 39,000 crore higher than the current fiscal's budgetary estimate of Rs 1.80 lakh crore. The revised capital outlay for 2025-26 has been estimated at Rs 1,86,454 crore.
Under capital expenditure, Rs 63,733 crore has been set aside for aircraft and aero engines, while Rs 25,023 crore is allocated for the naval fleet.
The revenue expenditure has been put at Rs 5,53,668 crore, which includes Rs 1,71,338 crore for pensions.
In her budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed exempting basic customs duty on components and parts required for the manufacture of civilian, training, and other aircraft. She also announced waiving basic customs duty on raw materials imported for the manufacture of parts of aircraft to be used in maintenance, repair, or overhaul requirements by units in the defence sector.
The two decisions are expected to help the defence aerospace industry.
Defence Minister Singh said the "most important" aspect of the budget is the modernisation of the three services. "I express my heartfelt gratitude to our Prime Minister Modi ji for allocating Rs 7.85 lakh crore for the defence sector," he said.
"Coming after the historic success of Operation Sindoor, this budget has further strengthened our resolve to make the country's defence system even more robust," he added.
Singh said a provision of Rs 2.19 lakh crore has been made for the overall capital expenditure of the armed forces. "The most important aspect of this Budget is the modernisation of our three services. For this, a provision of Rs 1.85 lakh crore has been made this year, which is approximately 24 per cent higher than the previous financial year," he said.
"As a result of this increase, our military capability will become even more powerful," Singh added.
The defence minister said the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families has also been given importance in this budget. "Under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, a provision of Rs 12,100 crore has been made, which is an increase of approximately 45 per cent compared to the current year," he said.
"This budget strengthens the balance between security, development, and self-reliance," he noted.
The allocation for defence in the budget works out to around two per cent of the projected GDP for 2026-27. The defence ministry said the defence outlay focuses on modernisation, technological innovation, and streamlined procurement for optimal resource utilisation.

In her speech, Union Finance Minister Sitharaman announced that the target for capex will be raised to Rs 12.2 lakh crore for FY27 from Rs 11.2 lakh crore earmarked for the current fiscal year.

&ldquo;Tourism sector has a large role to play in employment generation, forex earnings and expanding the local economy. I propose to set up a National Institute of Hospitality by upgrading the existing National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology,&rdquo; she said.
It will function as a &ldquo;bridge&rdquo; between academia, industry and and government, the FM said.
In her speech, the finance minister further proposed to &ldquo;develop 15 archeological sites&rdquo;, including Lothal, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Sarnath, Hastinapur, Leh Palace into &ldquo;vibrant experiential cultural destinations&rdquo;.
&ldquo;Excavated landscapes will be opened to the public through curated walkways, immersive storytelling skills and technologies will be introduced to help conservation labs, interpretation centres and guides,&rdquo; she said.
The minister also proposed a &ldquo;pilot scheme for upskilling 10,000 guides in 20 iconic tourist sites&rdquo; through a standardised high-quality 12-week training programme in hybrid mode, in collaboration with an Indian Institute of Management.&nbsp;

Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday accused the Centre of branding people of West Bengal as "Bangladeshis" and lambasted the finance minister for not mentioning the state in her Budget speech.
Asked about the Budget, Banerjee said it has no solutions for any community, and called it a "faceless, baseless and visionless Budget".
"The Budget speech was 85 minutes long -- 5,100 seconds -- Bengal was not even mentioned. Forget Bengal; farmer, youth... there was nothing concrete for anyone. They talk about AI, Skill India, technological advancement; how would youth get employment, how would employment be generated, there is no mention. There is nothing on how to increase farmers' income, there is nothing for any community," Banerjee said.
"It is the Union government and its ministers, the ones who presented the Budget, they call us Bangladeshis. Bengal was not even mentioned. Jal Jeevan Mission money has been stopped, they have not even fulfilled old promises..." he said.
Accusing the prime minister and the Union home minister of branding ten crore people of Bengal as Bangladeshis, he said, "For the people of the state -- workers, farmers, fishermen and the youth -- there is nothing in this Budget. There is no roadmap for young people," he added.
Banerjee further said they have no expectations from the BJP-led government at the Centre.
"We have no expectations from this government. After 2021, the way the BJP has tortured the people of Bengal leaves us with no expectations from them. From the BJP's perspective, they know they will lose Bengal lock, stock and barrel, which is why they deliberately chose not to allocate funds to the state," he added.
The TMC leader called Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's Budget speech a "self-appraisal report".
"Government would defend its Budget; to me, it is more like a self-appraisal report written by its own PR department. It does not have any concrete solution to offer to anybody," he said.
He also said that while the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) already exists in Bengaluru and new ones are announced for Jharkhand and Assam, West Bengal "did not get anything".
Senior TMC leader Saugata Roy also said there are no new announcements in the Budget, and slammed the Union government for West Bengal not being mentioned in Sitharaman's speech.
"The finance minister was given no freedom to make any new announcement. Old schemes have been repeated... None of the states got anything, and West Bengal did not get anything at all," he said.

Another Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said this budget is not for common people, but for big corporates and wondered how people can welcome it as there is nothing in it.
"How can people welcome this budget, there is nothing in it. It is completely hollow," he said. He also said that the budget has given nothing to Kerala as the government has been promising an AIIMS for the southern state for several years, which is very good in health and tourism sectors.
Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala said on X, "Budget2026 is Politically directionless. Policywise bankrupt. Technical Mumbo Jumbo, Zero Substance ! Lots of Committees, Zero Deliverables!"

Congress deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari said the budget is "most disappointing" as it offers nothing to farmers, youth or the country's economy.
"The faces of the ruling party show that there cannot be a more disappointing budget than this, which has cheated people. In the nine budgets of FM, it is the most disappointing. It offers nothing for the farmers, for providing employment to the youth and for the country's economy."
"Overall, it offers a toy which does not even have sound. The Sensex has collapsed and speaks the story of this budget. The MSME sector which was supposed to be saved, will feel more suffocated. It is one which has cheated people and given disappointment to the country," he told reporters.

Congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nirmala Sitharaman for "resounding reaffirmation" of the government&rsquo;s commitment to drive growth and development with fiscal prudence, Shah said the budget fulfils the target of keeping the fiscal deficit below 4.5 per cent.

The Union Home Minister said the decision to benefit three crore farmers through the Coconut Promotion Scheme in coastal areas, promote production and export of cashew and coconut, and conserve sandalwood clearly demonstrates that Prime Minister Modi is fully committed to the prosperity of farmers and to making agriculture a profitable enterprise.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday announced a slew of infrastructure, logistics, rail and tourism initiatives for poll-bound West Bengal in the Union Budget for 2026-27.
A key announcement was the proposal to develop a new dedicated freight corridor from Dankuni in West Bengal to Surat in Gujarat, aimed at promoting environmentally sustainable and efficient movement of cargo.
The corridor is expected to significantly reduce logistics costs for industries in eastern India, and improve connectivity between the eastern and western markets.
Assembly elections are due in West Bengal in the coming months.
In another major push, Sitharaman said the Centre will develop an Integrated East Coast Industrial Corridor, with a well-connected industrial node at Durgapur, a key manufacturing hub in West Bengal. The project is expected to strengthen the state&rsquo;s role in the Centre&rsquo;s &lsquo;Purvodaya&rsquo; vision for accelerating industrial growth in eastern India.
The Budget also proposed the creation of five tourism destinations across the five &lsquo;Purvodaya&rsquo; states, including West Bengal, to boost employment and regional development. To support sustainable urban mobility in these regions, the government also said it will make a provision for 4,000 electric buses.
To boost rail connectivity, Sitharaman announced plans to develop seven high-speed rail corridors across the country, with one of the proposed routes linking Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Siliguri in northern West Bengal.
The corridor is expected to significantly cut travel time, and enhance economic and strategic integration of north Bengal with the rest of the country.
Welcoming the Budget, Mehul Mohanka, Deputy Chairman of CII (Eastern Region), said the announcements, including those on rare earths and high-speed rail corridors, would have long-term benefits for the region.
The Budget also laid emphasis on strengthening the critical minerals and rare earths ecosystem, along with measures to boost MSMEs and employment-linked manufacturing, which could benefit industrial clusters in eastern India, including West Bengal, through improved access to raw materials, logistics support and downstream manufacturing opportunities.

Under these five sub-parts, she announced a 'National Fibre Scheme' for self-reliance in natural fibres such as silk, wool and jute, man-made fibres, and new-age fibres.
The government proposed a 'Textile Expansion and Employment Scheme' to modernise traditional clusters with capital support for machinery, technology upgradation and common testing and certification centres.
A National Handloom and Handicraft programme has been proposed to integrate and strengthen existing schemes and ensure targeted support for weavers and artisans.
That apart, the minister said a 'Tex-Eco Initiative' will be launched to promote globally competitive and sustainable textiles and apparels.
The government also proposed 'Samarth 2.0' to modernize and upgrade the textile skilling ecosystem through tie-ups with industry and academic institutions.
"Further, I propose to set up Mega Textile Parks in challenge mode. They can also focus on bringing value addition to technical textiles," Sitharaman said.
Moreover, the Centre will launch the Mahatma Gandhi Gram Swaraj initiative to strengthen khadi, handloom and handicrafts.
"This will help in global market linkage and branding. It will streamline and support training, skilling, quality of process and production. This will benefit our weavers, village industries, One - District &ndash; One - Product initiative and rural youth," the finance minister said.
She proposed a dedicated initiative for sports goods that will promote manufacturing, research and innovation in equipment design as well as material sciences.
"I propose to extend the time period for export of final product from the existing 6 months to 1 year, for exporters of leather or textile garments, leather or synthetic footwear and other leather products," the minister said.

The National Security Council Secretariat has been allocated Rs 256.19 crore for 2026-27, against Rs 279.74 crore for 2025-26. The provision is for meeting the administrative expenses and space programme of the National Security Council Secretariat.
Up to Rs 65 crore has been allotted to the office of the Principal Scientific Advisor as against Rs 61.32 crore for 2025-26. The provision is for meeting the administrative expenses of the Office of Principal Scientific Advisor and the National Research Foundation.
The Cabinet Secretariat has been allocated Rs 80 crore in the budget, against Rs 78 crore given in 2025-26, to meet its administrative expenses and those of the National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention (NACWC).
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has been allocated Rs 73.52 crore for the coming fiscal against the allocation of Rs 68 crore in 2025-26 for meeting administrative expenses of the high office.
The Budget also allotted Rs 5.76 crore for hospitality and entertainment expenses in 2026-27. In 2025-26, the allocation was Rs 6.20 crore. This provision is for expenditure on government hospitality and entertainment of foreign state guests, official entertainment arranged at Rashtrapati Bhawan on behalf of the Vice President and Prime Minister, reception on National Days, investiture and ceremonies for presentation of credentials, etc.
The Budget also allocated Rs 1.53 crore for expenditure on payments of secretariat assistance to former governors. The allocation was Rs 1.40 crore in 2025-26.

Addressing Parliament, Sitharaman announced a reduction in the tariff rate on all dutiable goods imported for personal use from 20 per cent to 10 per cent, as part of efforts to ease costs for citizens and enhance trade competitiveness.

I also propose to allow duty-free imports of specified inputs, which is currently available for exports of leather or synthetic footwear, to exports of shoe uppers as well,&rdquo; she said.
In a boost to the defence sector, Sitharaman announced exemptions on basic customs duty for raw materials imported to manufacture aircraft parts used for maintenance, repair, or overhaul requirements by units in the defence sector.
The Finance Minister also proposed several measures to support energy and green technology projects. &ldquo;I propose to extend the basic customs duty exemption on import of goods required for nuclear power projects till 2035 and expand it for all nuclear plants irrespective of their capacity,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;
She added, &ldquo;I propose to extend the basic customs duty exemption given to capital goods used for manufacturing lithium-ion cells for batteries to those used for manufacturing lithium-ion cells for battery energy storage systems also. I propose to exempt the basic customs duty on the import of sodium antimonate for use in the manufacturing of solar glass. It is proposed to provide basic customs duty exemption to the import of capital goods required for the processing of critical minerals in India.&rdquo;
The customs duty exemptions and export support measures follow the imposition of 50 per cent tariffs by the United States on Indian goods, which affected sectors including textiles, seafood, and other key exports.
Additionally, FM Sitharaman proposed support for mineral-rich states such as Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu to establish dedicated rare earth corridors, reinforcing India&rsquo;s strategic push in critical minerals and renewable energy infrastructure.
Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2026-27 for the record ninth consecutive time, continuing the government&rsquo;s focus on growth, industrial competitiveness, and citizen-friendly reforms.

Delhi Police has been allocated Rs 12,503.65 crore in the Union Budget for 2026-27, an increase of 4.79 per cent from the previous fiscal year.&nbsp;
The funds will be used for routine expenses and various schemes, including the development of a model traffic system and an enhanced communication network in the NCR region.&nbsp;
Delhi Police is responsible for maintaining law and order in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, including traffic management.&nbsp;
Upgrading communication infrastructure, incorporating the latest technology, installing traffic signals, and training personnel are also part of its mandate.&nbsp;
For the current financial year 2025-26, the Budget allocated to the Delhi Police was Rs 11,931.66 crore, which has been raised to Rs 12,503.65 crore for the upcoming fiscal year.&nbsp;
Earlier, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the Budget was a step towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Viksit Bharat.&nbsp;
"It has something for every segment, especially employment generation for youth, cultural heritage conservation and development, sports, rebates for availing education and health services in foreign countries," the chief minister told reporters after watching the budget presentation at an event in North West Delhi's Tri Nagar area with local residents.&nbsp;
