BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who returned to India on May 14 after being released by Pakistan Rangers, reached his residence in West Bengal&rsquo;s Hooghly district on Friday evening.
Shaw was held captive in the neighbouring country for nearly three weeks.
Earlier in the day, Purnam arrived at Howrah station, where he was greeted by his family and well-wishers with chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Vande Mataram.' His father, Bholenath Shaw, who had been waiting for hours on the platform, hugged him tightly.
Security personnel quickly formed a cordon around Shaw and his family as hundreds of people tried to shake his hand and offer greetings.
A visibly exhausted yet smiling Shaw told the jostling media, "I am happy to be back and to meet my near and dear ones." Shaw and his family were then escorted in battery-operated cars to the car parking stand adjacent to the Howrah station&rsquo;s new complex.
Upon reaching his hometown Rishra, they were welcomed by people and a band playing patriotic tunes.
The local club near his home was decorated with strings of tiny coloured bulbs, creating a festive atmosphere.
His wife Rajani Shaw, who is expecting, struggled to hold back tears as neighbours and family members exchanged sweets in celebration.
"He has been serving the nation as a paramilitary personnel for 17 years. He will return to the frontiers again. We are proud of him as a brave warrior, one of those guarding the nation&rsquo;s borders," said Rajani, overwhelmed with emotion.
As Purnam stepped into his home, words failed him. His brother, Rahul Shaw, exclaimed, "It feels like Diwali has returned to our area." Purnam had returned to India through the Attari-Wagah border on the evening of May 14.
The BSF constable had been taken into custody by Pakistan Rangers on April 23, after he inadvertently crossed the international border in Punjab&rsquo;s Ferozepur district.
His accidental crossing came just a day after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which had further heightened border tensions.

A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, Purnam Kumar Shaw, was returned to India on Wednesday after being held by Pakistan Rangers for inadvertently crossing the International Border. Shaw, 40, was handed over at the Joint Check Post Attari in Amritsar at approximately 10:30 AM. The process was conducted peacefully and followed established protocols, as stated by the BSF.
Shaw was detained on April 23, 2025, in Punjab's Ferozepur district. His detention followed a tragic incident in Pahalgam, Kashmir, where terrorists killed 26 tourists.

 The handover occurred shortly after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire following days of hostilities. India had launched Operation Sindoor earlier, targeting "terror sites" in both Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, which led to cross-border firing.

Seventeen personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) were injured after a mini truck they were travelling in overturned in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh on Friday, police said.
The incident took place in the afternoon when the jawans were heading to Antagarh from their camp in Phulpad village in the district, a senior police official said.
As per the preliminary information, the vehicle carrying jawans, belonging to the 162nd battalion of the BSF, was heading to Antagarh railway station to drop them as they were going on leave, he said.
"The vehicle overturned near Kumhari village under Rowghat police station limits on Antagarh-Narayanpur road, leaving 17 of them injured. The injured jawans were taken to a hospital in Narayanpur district headquarters for treatment," he said.
Later, four of them were referred to Raipur for further treatment, he added.
An investigation into the incident is underway, he added.
The BSF is extensively deployed in Kanker district, which falls in Bastar region, for anti-Naxal operations.&nbsp;

BSF trooper, 4 civilians injured as Pak troops open fire at 5 Indian posts

The injured jawan was shifted to the GMC Hospital in Jammu for specialised treatment.

A Border Security Force jawan and four civilians were injured when Pakistan Rangers opened unprovoked firing at five Indian posts along the International Border (IB) in the Arnia and R S Pura sectors in Jammu Thursday night, a senior official said.
The firing by the Pakistani troops started around 8 pm in the Arnia sector, he said, adding that the "unprovoked firing" was befittingly retaliated.
Four to five posts are involved in the firing on both sides, the BSF official told PTI.
He said a BSF jawan and four civilians were injured.
The injured jawan was shifted to the GMC Hospital in Jammu for specialised treatment, the official said, adding that the exchange of fire was going on intermittently.
On whether there were any losses to Pakistani posts in the retaliatory action by the BSF, he said it would be known in the morning.
As per sources, Pakistan Rangers also fired mortar shells in civilian areas, triggering panic among the border population.
Some of the areas that reportedly came under fire include Arnia, Suchtgarh, Sia, Jabowal and Treva areas along the IB, they said.
People in Arnia and Jabowal, particularly migrant labourers, were seen fleeing their homes.
Several families have taken shelter in bunkers in various villages in the border area.
There have been more than a dozen such ceasefire violations after India and Pakistan signed an agreement on February 25, 2021, to strictly observe all agreements on ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir and other sectors.&nbsp;
