Persisting with Chris Woakes is proving to be "counter-productive" while Zak Crawley doesn't seem to have the ability to learn from his mistakes, said England legend Geoffrey Boycott as he lambasted the under-performing duo for the home team's loss to India in the second Test at Edgbaston.
Woakes, the senior-most English bowler in the line-up with an experience of 59 Tests, bowled 82 overs across two games and picked up only three wickets for 290 runs. In three innings that he batted, he tallied 50 runs with a top score of 38.
"It is counter productive to keep the same guys in the team when they are past their sell-by date or not doing enough," Boycott wrote in his column for British daily 'The Telegraph'.
"Look at Chris Woakes. His pace is dropping as you would expect as a seamer gets older. He has never been a wicket-taker abroad, where his record is poor. He is good - or has been good - on English pitches, and his batting has been handy at times as a safety valve when others have failed," Boycott wrote.
He also criticised the team management's aim to get runs from Woakes, whose primary skill is not batting. The series is currently tied after England won the opener and went down by 336 runs in the second game.
"His job should not be to shore up bad batting. Batsmen are there to score runs and bowlers need to take wickets." Boycott said Woakes is nowhere close to James Anderson, who was an artist when it came to his craft.
"Woakes has been a good cricketer but not a master craftsman like James Anderson, who took buckets full of wickets home and away consistently. Woakes also has a poor record in Australia that is highly unlikely to change at the age of 36," he said.
In case of Crawley, Boycott was as severe as former England skipper Michael Vaughan by stating that the lanky right-hander can't get any better. Crawley has one half century in four innings against India so far.
"I don't think he can change or get better. Batting is in the head and the brain dictates how you approach batting: what shots you attempt, what balls you leave. His faults in technique and thinking are ingrained," Boycott observed.
"A leopard doesn&rsquo;t change his spots, or maybe Zak does not want to change. He should be approaching his best years but in 56 Tests he has learned nothing. One sparkling innings and numerous failures, with an average of 31, is not good enough."

Days after a group of fruit traders in Pune decided to stop importing apples from Turkiye to protest against that country's open support to Pakistan, a trader on Thursday claimed to have received a threatening voice message from Pakistan.
Suyog Zende, a trader at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee, commonly known as Marketyard, and some others had said they will not deal in apples from Turkiye after that country criticised India's recent strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
"Around 9 this morning, I started getting calls on my phone but did not pick up the phone. Later I received a voice note message. The message contained slurs for India and said we can not do any harm to Pakistan or Turkiye. I sent a voice note responding to the threats," he told reporters.
Traders are planning to meet the Pune police commissioner in this regard, said Zende.
As a protest, traders at Marketyard on Thursday threw apples imported from Turkiye on the road.
According to Zende, traders in Pune import apples, litchi, plums, cherries, and dried fruits from Turkiye. The import of apples alone is to the tune of Rs 1,200 crore, he had said earlier.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday deplored the "boycott culture" targeting certain films and said such instances vitiate the atmosphere at a time when India is keen to enhance its influence as a soft power.

"At a time when India is keen to enhance its influence as a soft power, at a time when Indian films are making waves in every corner of the world, such talk vitiates the atmosphere," Thakur told reporters here responding to questions on boycott of films by various interest groups.
The minister's remarks come at a time when Shah Rukh Khan-starrer "Pathaan", which released on Wednesday, is facing boycott calls over one of its songs.
In the past, actor Akshay Kumar's "Samrat Prithviraj", Aamir Khan's "Laal Singh Chaddha" and Deepika Padukone's "Padmaavat" had faced boycott calls.
"If someone has a problem (with a film), then they should talk to the concerned department which will take it up with the producer and director," Thakur said.
"But sometimes, just to vitiate the atmosphere, some people comment on something even before knowing about it fully. That causes problems. This should not happen," he said.
Thakur is in Mumbai to inaugurate the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Film Festival that will showcase 58 movies from the regional grouping of eight Eurasian nations. SCO observer countries and dialogue partners have sent entries in the non-competition section of the film festival.
The minister also made a strong pitch for creative autonomy and said there were adequate safeguards in place for monitoring content on over-the-top (OTT) platforms.
"There should be no restrictions on creativity," Thakur said.
He said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting does receive complaints about the content on OTT platforms, but almost 95 per cent of grievances are settled at the level of producers and the others get resolved at the second stage of the association of publishers of the content.
The minister said only one per cent of complaints reach the inter-departmental committee and it is ensured that strict action is taken in such cases.&nbsp;
