In a major crackdown on drug trafficking amidst the ongoing anti-drugs &lsquo;Yudh Nashian Virudh&rsquo; campaign launched on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Amritsar Commissionerate Police, with the support of Border Security Force (BSF) and Rajasthan Police, has busted a major international drug cartel being operated by Pak-based smuggler Tanveer Shah and Canada-based handler Joban Kaler and recovered huge consignment of 60.302 Kg Heroin from near the International Border in Barmer, Rajasthan, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Monday.
The operation has led to the arrest of at least nine persons including smugglers, traffickers and hawala operators from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Jammu &amp; Kashmir.
Those arrested have been identified as Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan (23) of village Rampura in Amritsar, Jashanpreet Singh alias Jashan (20) of village Khurmania in Amritsar, Gursahib Singh (25) of village Boparai Baj in Amritsar, Rajeev Panjgotra alias Rajveer (29) of village Kalyana in J&amp;K, Somnath (62) of Fatehpur Brahmana in J&amp;K, Prashotam Singh alias Kala (50) of Simbal camp in J&amp;K, Kulwinder Singh (24) of village Mullechak in Amritsar, Rajinder Kaur (42) of village Tanda in J&amp;K and one hawala-operator.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that preliminary investigations have revealed that the drug cartel was being operated by Pakistan-based smuggler Tanveer Shah and Canada-based smuggler Joban Kaler with the help of local kingpin Gursahib Singh, who was already lodged in Goindwal Sahib Jail but continued to run the network from inside the jail using a mobile phone. His phone has been recovered with the help of jail authorities and his production warrant was obtained for deeper probe into Canada-Pakistan linkages, he said.
The DGP said that further investigations are on to establish forward and backward linkages in this case.
Sharing more details, Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that the operation began after Gursahib Singh was arrested last month with 1 kg heroin from Chheharta. Despite being in jail, accused Gursahib operated through his nephew Jashanpreet Singh and associate Gagandeep Singh, who were arrested with 102 gm heroin. Their interrogation led to the huge 60 kg heroin consignment in Barmer, he said.
He said that during investigation, the hawala network used for routing drug money has also been exposed with the arrest of hawala-operator.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of DCP (D) City Ravinderpal Singh, ADCP (D) Jagbinder Singh, ADCP-2 Harpal Singh, ACP (D) Yadwinder Singh, ACP West Shivdarshan Singh, SHO Chheharta Vinod Sharma, CIA-1 Incharge Amolakdeep Singh and CIA-2 Incharge Ravi Kumar.
&nbsp;The CP said that probe has also revealed that drugs were being smuggled from across the Indo-Pak border and routed through Rajasthan to Punjab, with further local distribution channels. Further working on backward linkages five more accused associated with Tanveer Shah of Pakistan were also identified and raids are being conducted to nab them, he said.
A case FIR No. 118 dated 17/06/2025 under sections 21-B, 21-C, 27-B and 29 of NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Chheharta in Amritsar.

China on Monday said that the boundary dispute with India is complicated and will take time to settle but at the same time, it expressed its readiness to hold discussions on the delimitation of the border and keep it peaceful.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in his meeting with Chinese counterpart Dong Jun in Qingdao on June 26 proposed that India and China should solve the "complex issues" under a structured roadmap comprising steps to de-escalate tensions along the frontiers and rejuvenate the existing mechanism to demarcate the borders.
Singh and Dong held bilateral talks on the sidelines of a conclave of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in the Chinese port city of Qingdao, with a focus on maintaining peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Asked for China's reaction to Singh's remarks, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, &ldquo;What I can tell you is that China and India have established the Special Representatives (SRs) mechanism on the boundary question and reached the Agreement on the Political Parameters and Guiding Principles for the Settlement of the China-India Boundary Question".
The two sides have diplomatic and military communication mechanisms at various levels, she said.
&ldquo;China stands ready to maintain communication with India on issues including delimitation negotiation and border management, jointly keep the border areas peaceful and tranquil, and promote cross-border exchange and cooperation,&rdquo; she said.
Questioned about the prolonged delay in resolving the border issue despite 23 rounds of the SR-level talks, Mao said, &ldquo;The boundary question is complicated, and it takes time to settle it&rdquo;.
&ldquo;The positive side is that the two countries have already established mechanisms at various levels for thorough communication. We hope that India will work with China in the same direction, continue to stay in communication on relevant issue and jointly keep the border areas peaceful and tranquil,&rdquo; she said.
The 23rd round of the meeting of the SRs, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, was held here in December last year. It was the first meeting of the SRs since frictions had emerged in the Western Sector of the India-China border areas in 2020.
The SRs in their meeting positively affirmed the implementation of the latest disengagement agreement of October 2024, resulting in patrolling and grazing in relevant areas.
In his meeting with Dong, Singh had emphasised the need to create "good neighbourly conditions" to achieve the best mutual benefits and called for "taking action on the ground" to bridge the "trust deficit" resulting from the 2020 eastern Ladakh border standoff, according to an Indian readout.
Singh also briefed Dong on the Pahalgam terror attack targeting innocent civilians, and India's Operation Sindoor to dismantle the terrorist networks in Pakistan.
The Singh-Dong meeting came amid efforts by both New Delhi and Beijing to reset their ties following an understanding last October to end the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

After teetering on the edge for nearly a week, border regions in the north experienced a less fraught day, with no shelling, no sightings of drones, and a comparatively lighter yoke of emergency measures.
New Delhi and Islamabad reached an understanding Saturday to halt military actions with immediate effect after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.
Villagers living close to the Line of Control who were forced to flee due to heavy shelling by the Pakistani military started returning home on Monday.
They started their journey back to their villages after bomb disposal squads cleared the residential areas of any leftover or unexploded shells, officials said.
"We are happy that a ceasefire has been reached between the two countries. We are also hopeful that Pakistan will not resort to such activities again," said Arshad Ahmad, a resident of the Kamalkote area in Uri.
Uri MLA Sajjad Shafi has asked the residents of villages along the frontline to remain vigilant and not touch anything suspicious.
"They should immediately report any suspicious objects to the authorities for proper disposal," he said.
Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday asked the residents of border villages not to rush back as residential areas were yet to be sanitised and cleared of any unexplored shells.
In Punjab, markets teemed with people in the border areas on Monday, even though schools in some districts remained shut.
Schools in Ferozepur, Fazilka, Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Gurdaspur districts, that lie on the border with Pakistan, remained shut on Monday. In Pathankot and Gurdaspur, colleges and universities also remained closed.
Punjab shares a 553-km frontier with Pakistan.
"India has taught a lesson to Pakistan and it has been successful in sending a strong message to the neighbouring nation. And now Pakistan, which is a rogue nation, will not dare to cast an evil eye on our country," a grocery shop owner in Pathankot said.
Pakistan especially targeted Pathankot with multiple drone attacks, but they were thwarted by the Indian security forces.
In Ferozepur, villagers who had moved to safer places were returning to their villages.
Daler Singh, a native of Jallo Ke village near the border, said that most residents of nearby areas had left hearth and home. "Now, most of them have returned but they remain cautious. Overall, life is normal and we are going back to our fields," he said.
A Ferozepur native said, "The situation is normal now. We hope the ceasefire holds and peace prevails." In Rajasthan, a complete blackout was observed in the border districts Sunday night.
There were reports that some red lights, suspected to be of drones, were spotted in the sky in Barmer.
The district administration sent out an alert on X, "Incoming drone activity spotted. Please stay inside your houses and observe blackout: DM Barmer." It, however, said no drone was shot down.
By Monday morning, an apparent sense of normalcy became palpable in the border districts with people gathering at tea stalls and shops and bantering.
Jalam Singh, a Jaisalmer local, said, "Things appear to be back to normal now. Last night was peaceful." Jammu and Kashmir, the worst hit border, was peaceful last night with no hostilities between the Indian and Pakistani militaries.
"The night remained largely peaceful across Jammu and Kashmir and other areas along the international border," the Indian Army said in a brief statement Monday morning.
"No incidents have been reported, marking the first calm night in recent days," it said.

This high-stakes defense initiative was followed by the deployment of Israeli-manufactured HARPY drones, which were utilized to incapacitate Pakistani air defense radars, including strategic installations near Lahore.
Sources from the news agency ANI disclosed that the Indian Air Force engaged the S-400 missile systems to neutralize 'moving targets' that were headed towards Indian jurisdiction. These targets were effectively eliminated, ensuring no damage to Indian cities.
In a calculated countermeasure, India employed HARPY drones to disable Pakistan's air defense infrastructure. This deployment comes amidst reports of Pakistani forces allegedly targeting military installations across 15 northern and western Indian cities, spanning areas such as Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Gujarat.
Government officials have stated that the missile attacks were part of a broader Pakistani effort to strike at Indian military capabilities. However, Indian defenses thwarted these attempts, subsequently disabling Pakistani air defense systems in retaliation.
Authorities are now collecting debris from the downed drones and missiles. This material is expected to support India's longstanding claims that Pakistan is directly involved in fostering cross-border terrorism, providing both financial backing and military training to extremist elements.
The recent surge in conflict follows closely on the heels of Operation Sindoor, India's robust military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, predominantly civilians. In this operation, Indian forces targeted nine terror bases located in Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir, reportedly neutralizing over 100 militants.&nbsp;
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh briefed opposition leaders on these developments, highlighting the strategic destruction of terror infrastructure.
HARPY Drones
HARPY drones, designed primarily for attacking radar systems, play a crucial role in Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD). With a high-explosive payload, these drones can autonomously detect and destroy radiation-emitting targets, striking from diverse angles using both shallow and steep dive profiles. These assets are capable of conducting deep-strike missions, operating day and night for durations extending to nine hours.
S-400 Missile Defense System
The S-400, referred to by India as 'Sudharshan Chakra,' is capable of tracking incoming missiles from distances of up to 600 kilometers and intercepting them within a 400-kilometer range. An Indo-Russian agreement, valued at Rs 35,000 crore, secured five S-400 squadrons for India. Three of these squadrons have been delivered and are currently operational along the Pakistani and Chinese borders. However, the delivery of the remaining two squadrons has experienced delays due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as noted by sources last year.

Indian and Chinese troops clashed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 and the face-off resulted in "minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides", the Indian Army said on Monday. The clash near Yangtse along the LAC in the sensitive sector took place last Friday amid the over 30-month border standoff between the two sides in eastern Ladakh. "On December 9, PLA troops contacted the LAC in Tawang Sector which was contested by own (Indian) troops in a firm and resolute manner. This face-off led to minor injuries to few personnel from both sides," the Army said in a statement. "Both sides immediately disengaged from the area. As a follow up of the incident, own (Indian) commander in the area held a flag meeting with his counterpart to discuss the issue in accordance with structured mechanisms to restore peace and tranquillity," it said. The Army statement did not mention the number of troops involved in the face-off and those injured in the incident. The Army said there are areas of "differing perception" along the LAC in the Tawang sector. "In certain areas along the LAC in the Tawang Sector in Arunachal Pradesh there are areas of differing perception, wherein both sides patrol the area up to their claim lines. This has been the trend since 2006," the Army said. It is learnt that the injuries on the Chinese side could be higher.

Spokesperson for the Taliban government Zabiullah Mujahid reportedly said, "This is cruelty and it is paving the way for enmity between Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are using all options to prevent repetition (of such attacks) and calling for our sovereignty to be respected. The Pakistani side should know that if a war starts it will not be in the interest of any side. It will cause instability in the region."
Islamabad has claimed that terror attacks on Pakistan have been launched from Afghan soil.&nbsp;Pakistan has been waging war on the Pakistani Taliban, while providing help to the Afghan Taliban.
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, is distinct from the Afghan Taliban, but TTP leaders have been known to seek asylum in Afghanistan.&nbsp;Apart from the TTP, a territorial dispute over the Durand Line has also been a thorn in Pakistan and Taliban relations.
The latest tension is ironic since Pakistan has been long accused of providing aid to the Afghan Taliban covertly, helping it fight the Americans in USA's longest war.&nbsp;The Taliban stormed to power in August 2021 as the US military withdrew from the war-torn country.
