Amid concerns over a possible Covid wave in India, the country's expert panel on immunisation is discussing the possibility of allowing a second booster dose to people, according to a Hindustan Times report.
A member of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) said that a section supports a second booster dose, but all scientific data will be minutely studied before any recommendation to the government.
Around 28% of the eligible population has taken the first booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine so far.
The Narendra Modi government recently approved the country's first intranasal vaccine as a booster. Bharat Biotech's iNCOVACC's approval for emergency use among adults who have received two doses of Covishield or Covaxin vaccine coincided with the surge of cases in neighbouring China.

The patient is a healthcare worker, who was fully vaccinated, and had even received a booster dose. Just 12 days after the booster vaccine, on December 20, 2021, the woman tested positive during a staff screening test. She went into isolation for 10 days, but did not develop any symptoms.
Then, on January 10, 2022, twenty days after the first infection, she developed Covid-like symptoms and took another RT-PCR test.The result again came out to be positive.
When the samples were sent for genome sequencing, it emerged that the woman had been infected by two different variants of the Sars-CoV-2 virus. The first, symptom-less infection was with the Delta variant, while the second one was Omicron, with cough and fever.
Scientists said that this case shows how Omicron can evade immunity from both vaccines and previous infections.

Vaccine maker Serum Institute of India (SII) on Friday said the precaution dose of its Covishield vaccine against COVID-19 will be priced at Rs 600 per shot for eligible individuals.
SII CEO Adar Poonawalla also welcomed the government’s move to allow precaution dose of the vaccine to all aged above 18 years at private vaccination centres, saying it will further provide long-term protection against the virus, and aid ease of travel.
“End-users will pay Rs 600 for the booster dose and the hospitals will get at discounted price,” Poonawalla said in a statement.
The Union Health Ministry on Friday announced that those above the age of 18 years who have completed nine months after the administration of the second dose will be eligible for the precaution dose.
Reacting to the government’s decision in a tweet, Poonawalla said, "We are delighted by GOI’s announcement on booster. The decision will further provide long term protection and aid ease of travel." He, however, said the nine-month gap was a bit long although the company had 200 million dosages in stock. SII has the capacity to produce 4 billion dosages.
Poonawalla also exuded confidence that the whole country can be vaccinated in about three months in case of requirement in future.
SII and Bharat Biotech have been major suppliers of COVID-19 vaccines to the government so far.

According to the health ministry, so far, about 96 per cent of all those above the age of 15 years in India have received at least one vaccine dose, while about 83 per cent have received both doses.
More than 2.4 crore precaution doses have also been administered to healthcare workers, frontline workers and those aged above 60 years. Besides, 45 per cent of beneficiaries in the 12-14 years age group have received the first dose, the ministry said.
The ongoing free COVID-19 inoculation programme through government vaccination centres for the first and the second dose to the eligible population as well as the precaution dose to healthcare workers, frontline workers and those above 60 years will be accelerated, the ministry stated.

India has started giving booster shots to health workers, frontline workers and senior citizens with illnesses. The recommended period, however, between the second and the third dose is currently nine months.
The move to give full approval to vaccines will perk up India's booster drive. The recommendation by the expert panel of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation has been sent to the top drug regulator DCGI.

The vaccines are unlikely to be available at the chemist shops anytime soon and people will still need to register on CoWIN platfomr for the third dose, reports quoting government sources said.
According to reports, 300 million doses of <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/explained-should-gap-between-covid-19-doses-be-increased-1618295309957">Covishield</a> are presently stocked with the Serum Institute of India. Covishield accounts for 90% of vaccinations in India.
Both the SII and Covixin maker Bharat Biotech had asked govt to give full approval to their vaccines.

Eligibility of such beneficiaries for the precaution dose will be based on the date of administration of 2nd dose as recorded in the Co-WIN system -- completion of nine months i.e. 39 weeks from the date of administration of second dose -- Bhushan said.
He informed that CoWIN will send reminder messages to all those eligible for precaution dose, which will be reflected in digital vaccination certificates.
Bhushan chaired a workshop through video conference on Tuesday with all states and UTs to review the roll-out of vaccination for the age group 15-18 and precautionary third dose for vulnerable categories -- healthcare workers (HCW), frontline workers (FLW) and those in the 60-plus age group with co-morbidity.
He said only Covaxin is to be administered in the age group 15-18 years and that additional doses of the vaccine will be sent to all states and UTs.
The Union Government will share the supply schedule of Covaxin with all the states and UTs in the next few days, he said.
Potential beneficiaries can either register themselves on Co-WIN from January 1 or avail of a walk-in registration when vaccination commences from January 3. Those with a birth year of 2007 or before will be eligible for vaccination under this category, he said.
All established protocols regarding vaccination are to be followed for the 15-18 years age group, beneficiaries are to wait for half-an-hour when they will be monitored for AEFI and will be eligible for the 2nd dose only after 28 days, according to a health ministry statement.
States were informed that they have the option to designate some COVID Vaccination Centre for vaccination of the 15-18 age group exclusively which can also be reflected on Co-WIN. Dedicated CVCs would ensure that there is no confusion in administering the vaccines.
For CVCs that are intended to serve all, the states were requested to ensure separate queues and vaccination teams for the 15-18 age group.
With regards to the administration of the precautionary dose, the Union Health Secretary highlighted that nine months must have elapsed since the administration of the second dose to make the beneficiary eligible.
Drawing attention to the misinformation being propagated through various media regarding the requirement of a doctor's certificate to establish co-morbidity, he categorically emphasised that the Union government has not issued any directions on the matter and prescriptions/certificates are not mandated to be produced at the vaccination centre for administration of the precaution dose.
States and UTs were further advised to ensure the orientation of vaccinators and vaccination team members for vaccination of the 15-18 age group. States were exhorted to undertake proper planning in advance for distribution of Covaxin to identified session sites. To avoid the mixing-up of vaccines during administration, separate CVCs, separate session sites, separate queue and separate vaccination team are to be strived for.
All citizens irrespective of their income status are entitled to free COVID-19 vaccination at government vaccination centres, Bhushan said in a letter.
Those who have the ability to pay are encouraged to use private hospitals' vaccination centres. The previously declared price for each vaccine at private centre will remain applicable for these group of beneficiaries, Bhushan said.
All such healthcare workers and frontline workers who are for any reason presently registered on the Co-WIN system as citizens and are aged less than 60 years will have to get their status appropriately assigned to HCW/FLW to avail the precaution dose. However, in order to do so they must produce the employment certificate in prescribed format.
This facility will only be available at government vaccination centres in on-site mode, the letter stated.
These guidelines will come into effect from January 3 and will be reviewed from time to time.
