Last-minute computer trouble nixed Saturday's launch attempt for Boeing's first astronaut flight, the latest in a string of delays over the years.
Two NASA astronauts were strapped in the company's Starliner capsule when the countdown automatically was halted at 3 minutes and 50 seconds by the computer system that controls the final minutes before liftoff.
With only a split second to take off, there was no time to work on the latest problem and the launch was called off.
Technicians raced to the pad to help astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams out of the capsule atop the fully fuelled Atlas V rocket at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Within an hour of the launch abort, the hatch was reopened.
The team can't get to the computers to troubleshoot the problem until the rocket is drained of all its fuel, said Tory Bruno, CEO for the rocket maker, United Launch Alliance.
Bruno said one of the three redundant computers located near the rocket at the pad was sluggish. All three must work properly to proceed with a launch, he said.
Depending on what needs to be fixed, the next launch attempt could be as early as Wednesday. If it doesn't blast off this coming week, then that would be it until mid-June in order to move the rocket off the pad and replace batteries.
"This is the business that we're in," Boeing's Mark Nappi said. "Everything's got to work perfectly." It was the second launch attempt. The first try on May 6 was delayed for leak checks and rocket repairs.
NASA wants a backup to SpaceX, which has been flying astronauts since 2020.

The valve may have exceeded its 200,000 lifetime cycles, Bruno said, which means it would have to be replaced, pushing the launch into next week. But if engineers can determine the valve is still within that limit, the launch team could try again as soon as Friday.
It was the latest delay for Boeing's first crew flight, on hold for years because of capsule trouble.
Bruno said similar valve trouble had occurred in years past on a few other Atlas rockets launching satellites. It was quickly resolved by turning the troublesome valves off and back on. But the company has stricter flight rules for astronaut flights, prohibiting valve recycling when a crew is on board.
&ldquo;And so we stayed with the rules and the procedures, and scrubbed as a result," Bruno said at a press conference.
NASA's commercial crew program manager Steve Stich acknowledged it was a tough call.
&ldquo;We're taking it one step at a time, and we're going to launch when we're ready and fly when it's safe to do so," Stich told reporters.

"Everyone started screaming, crying," said Australian receptionist Ellie Addison, one of 263 passengers aboard flight LA800.
"People were launched out of their seats, there was blood pouring from people's faces."
Sales administrator Veronica Martinez said it felt like the plane had stopped mid-air, and then "we just plunged". "People were flying, babies fell, it was horrible, lots of people were injured," she told AFP.
It is the latest in a string of headline-grabbing safety incidents to trouble US plane maker Boeing.
Both Boeing and Chile-based LATAM Airlines have promised to cooperate with authorities to pinpoint the cause of the unspecified "technical event".
<h3>'Black swan event'</h3>
Air accident safety investigator Joe Hattley told AFP that technical problems were rare in modern aircraft.
"That flight record will be key to understanding this event," said Hattley, who also teaches at the University of New South Wales in Australia.
"It will tell investigators if it was an atmospheric event or a technical problem with the aircraft."
Ashok Poduval, a commercial airline pilot for 15 years and now chief executive of the Massey University School of Aviation, said the incident appeared to be an ultra-rare "black swan event".
"A malfunction of the autopilot or unexpected clear-air turbulence are some of the possibilities that could cause an upset of this nature," he said.
Data from airline tracker FlightAware showed the plane began losing altitude about two hours into the three-hour flight. But it was unclear if this was part of its descent into Auckland.
<h3>Safety issues</h3>
US manufacturer Boeing said it "stands ready to support the investigation-related activities as requested."
The aircraft maker has suffered a series of safety issues in recent years, including the fatal Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes of 737 MAX planes in 2018 and 2019 that killed more than 350 people.
The manufacturer is still reeling from a near-catastrophic incident in January when a fuselage panel on a Boeing 737 MAX 9 Alaska Airlines jet blew off mid-flight in the United States.
Last week, a Boeing 777 jetliner bound for Japan had to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from San Francisco when a wheel fell off and plunged into an airport parking lot, damaging several cars.

Boeing has faced a series of quality control issues, most recently in a hair-raising incident in January when a door-sized panel of a Boeing 737 Max 9 blew off the fuselage after the plane took off in Portland, Oregon.
No one was seriously hurt in the incident, which triggered a 19-day emergency grounding of all Boeing 737 Max 9s.
US regulators last week gave Boeing 90 days to come up with a plan addressing quality control issues, with the FAA chief saying the company must "commit to real and profound improvements."
The Boeing 777 has six wheels on each of its main landing struts and is designed to land safely if some are missing or damaged, United said.

Boeing Chief Executive Dave Calhoun took responsibility on Tuesday for a near-catastrophic Alaska Airlines incident last week, vowing "complete transparency" as the aviation giant tries to pivot from its latest crisis.
"We're going to approach this (by) number one acknowledging our mistake," Calhoun told employees at a safety meeting called after Friday's emergency landing, which came after one of the plane's panels blew out mid-flight.
"We're going to approach it with 100 percent and complete transparency every step of the way," he said.
Calhoun, who ascended to Boeing's top post in January 2020 as the company reeled from two fatal crashes on the 737 MAX, committed to working with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is probing the incident.
The NTSB is "as good as it gets," Calhoun said, according to remarks released by the company. "I trust every step they take, and they will get to a conclusion."
US regulators have grounded 171 737 MAX 9 planes with the same configuration as the Alaska Airlines jet.
The affected panel, a door plug, is used to fill an unneeded emergency exit in planes.
NTSB investigators suggested Monday night that the part was not affixed adequately.
On Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it was still working with Boeing to finalize detailed inspection instructions for grounded planes.
"Boeing offered an initial version of instructions yesterday which they are now revising because of feedback received in response," the FAA said Tuesday.
"Upon receiving the revised version of instructions from Boeing the FAA will conduct a thorough review."
Boeing said it is in contact with customers and the FAA on requirements.
"As part of the process, we are making updates based on their feedback and requirements," a spokesman said.

The back-and-forth on inspections comes after both United Airlines and Alaska Airlines reported Monday finding loose hardware on some of their Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes during preliminary inspections undertaken since Friday's incident.
Hundreds of flights have been canceled due to the grounding of a fraction of the MAX fleet.
Alaska Airlines apologized to inconvenienced consumers in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
"We understand that travel plans have been impacted, and we are doing everything possible to minimize the disruption," Alaska posted, reiterating that it is awaiting further direction from Boeing and the FAA.
"Until then, the fleet will remain grounded," Alaska Airlines said.
The crisis has heaped renewed pressure on Boeing, which has struggled to completely find its footing since the earlier MAX crashes led to a lengthy grounding of the jets.
Boeing has struggled with supply chain and quality control problems since the MAX returned to service, limiting its output and hitting its bottom line.
The company's stock price has dropped over nine percent since Friday's incident.
Aviation analysts said the issue appeared to be a quality control defect rather than a design issue akin to the problem with a flawed flight handling system involved in two fatal MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019.
"It's just bad -- sloppy work like this," said Michel Merluzeau, an aeronautics specialist with consulting firm AIR. "It's an indication of something going through the safety net at Boeing, for whatever reason."
Boeing meanwhile reported on Tuesday it had delivered 44 737 MAX jets in December, reaching a total of 396 of the jets for all of 2023.
That was within Boeing's target, which the company lowered to 375 to 400 from an earlier range of 400-450.

Aviation regulator DGCA on Saturday directed domestic airlines to immediately carry out inspection of emergency exits of all Boeing 737-8 Max planes in their fleet.
The directive comes in the wake of the Alaska Airlines incident involving Boeing 737 -9 Max aircraft.
On Friday, the Alaska Airlines plane's outer section, including a window, fell off mid-air.
A senior DGCA official said the latest directive is an abundant precautionary measure.
"DGCA has directed all the Indian air operators to carry out a one-time inspection of the emergency exits immediately on all Boeing 737-8 Max aircraft currently operating as part of their fleet," the official said.
The official also said that pursuant to the Alaska Airlines incident involving Boeing 737 -9 Max aircraft, there have been no inputs or guidance from Boeing so far.
When asked whether flight schedules could be impacted by the inspection, the official replied in the negative.
"No, these one-time checks will be done during the night halt of aircraft," the official said.
Currently, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Akasa Air have Boeing 737-8 Max planes in their fleets.

American aerospace major Boeing on Wednesday said it is starting production of the Apache choppers to be delivered to the Indian Army.
The company will deliver a total of six AH-64E Apaches to the Indian Army.
The AH-64 Apache is one of the world's most advanced multi-role combat helicopters and is flown by the US Army.
"Boeing is starting production of the Indian Army's Apaches in Mesa, Arizona," the company said.
Earlier this year, Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited (TBAL) delivered the Indian Army's first AH-64 Apache fuselage from its advanced facility in Hyderabad.
"We are pleased to reach yet another significant milestone, highlighting Boeing's unwavering commitment to support India's defence capabilities," said Salil Gupte, president of Boeing India.
"The advanced technology and proven performance of the AH-64 will enhance the Indian Army's operational readiness and strengthen its defense capabilities," he said.
In 2020, Boeing completed delivery of 22 E-model Apaches to the Indian Air Force and signed a contract to produce six AH-64Es for the Indian Army.
The delivery of the Indian Army's Apaches is scheduled for 2024.

Boeing is suffering from production cut since 2019 after two 737 MAX crashed and the Covid-19 pandemic curtailed output. As per Reuters, if successful, the 52-production rate would mark the first time Boeing has manufactured the jet at that volume since 2019. This would also allow Boeing to defend a 40% market share of the narrowbody market. This is the lowest level &nbsp;required to maintain a duopoly as its European rival Airbus AIR.PA also increases single-aisle production.
Earlier in March, Reuters had also reported that Boeing's CEO Stan Deal has said that the production rate will be ramped up very soon. However, a key factor that can affect Boeing's plans is the supply chain health. The company is struggling to hire and train workers - a problem that has led to parts shortages.&nbsp;

The move comes as the company puts more of its resources into "products, services and technology development". "While no one has been notified of job losses yet, we will continue to share information transparently to allow people to plan. The company, which recently relocated its headquarters to Arlington, Virginia, said it expects to &ldquo;significantly grow&rdquo; the overall workforce during the year," the company said.&nbsp; It will outsource some of the roles to Tata Consulting Services, a unit of one of India's largest conglomerates. Boeing's total workforce was 156,000 employees as of December 31, 2022, the company said.

The idea was to take advantage of the new engines developed for the transport &mdash; high-bypass turbofan engines, which burned less fuel by passing air around the engine core, enabling a farther flight range &mdash; and to use them for a newly imagined civilian aircraft.
It took more than 50,000 Boeing workers less than 16 months to churn out the first 747 &mdash; a Herculean effort that earned them the nickname "The Incredibles." The jumbo jet's production required the construction of a massive factory in Everett, north of Seattle &mdash; the world's largest building by volume.
The plane's fuselage was 225 feet (68.5 meters) long and the tail stood as tall as a six-story building. The plane's design included a second deck extending from the cockpit back over the first third of the plane, giving it a distinctive hump and inspiring a nickname, the Whale. More romantically, the 747 became known as the Queen of the Skies.
Some airlines turned the second deck into a first-class cocktail lounge, while even the lower deck sometimes featured lounges or even a piano bar. One decommissioned 747, originally built for Singapore Airlines in 1976, has been converted into a 33-room hotel near the airport in Stockholm.
"It was the first big carrier, the first widebody, so it set a new standard for airlines to figure out what to do with it, and how to fill it," said Guillaume de Syon, a history professor at Pennsylvania's Albright College who specializes in aviation and mobility.

"It became the essence of mass air travel: You couldn't fill it with people paying full price, so you need to lower prices to get people onboard. It contributed to what happened in the late 1970s with the deregulation of air travel." The first 747 entered service in 1970 on Pan Am's New York-London route, and its timing was terrible, Aboulafia said. It debuted shortly before the oil crisis of 1973, amid a recession that saw Boeing's employment fall from 100,800 employees in 1967 to a low of 38,690 in April 1971. The "Boeing bust" was infamously marked by a billboard near the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport that read, "Will the last person leaving SEATTLE -- Turn out the lights." An updated model &mdash; the 747-400 series &mdash; arrived in the late 1980s and had much better timing, coinciding with the Asian economic boom of the early 1990s, Aboulafia said. He recalled taking a Cathay Pacific 747 from Los Angeles to Hong Kong as a twentysomething backpacker in 1991.
"Even people like me could go see Asia," Aboulafia said. "Before, you had to stop for fuel in Alaska or Hawaii and it cost a lot more. This was a straight shot &mdash; and reasonably priced." Delta was the last U.S. airline to use the 747 for passenger flights, which ended in 2017, although some other international carriers continue to fly it, including the German airline Lufthansa.
Atlas Air ordered four 747-8 freighters early last year, with the final one leaving the factory Tuesday.
Boeing's roots are in the Seattle area, and it has assembly plants in Washington state and South Carolina. The company announced in May that it would move its headquarters from Chicago to Arlington, Virginia, putting its executives closer to key federal government officials and the Federal Aviation Administration, which certifies Boeing passenger and cargo planes.
Boeing's relationship with the FAA has been strained since deadly crashes of its best-selling plane, the 737 Max, in 2018 and 2019. The FAA took nearly two years &mdash; far longer than Boeing expected &mdash; to approve design changes and allow the plane back in the air.
