Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday exuded confidence that the BJP will win the upcoming assembly polls in West Bengal, and &ldquo;drive out every single infiltrator&rdquo; from the state after coming to power.
Shah made the remark while addressing a function of the Sashastra Seema Bal in Araria district of Bihar, which falls in the Seemanchal region bordering West Bengal.
&ldquo;Elections are around the corner in West Bengal. I am confident that the BJP is going to win. Upon formation of the new government, we shall drive out every single infiltrator,&rdquo; he asserted.
&ldquo;The process of flushing out infiltrators will begin in Bihar, especially in the Seemanchal region. We had won the assembly polls here last year on this very issue. And, we got the mandate even though opponents were criticising our agenda,&rdquo; the home minister said.
Shah said infiltration is a threat to national security, and infiltrators also threaten the demographic balance of an area, feed on ration, and avail other benefits meant for common people.
&ldquo;Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Assam are the most vulnerable to such demographic disturbance. The Narendra Modi government is committed to maintain demographic balance,&rdquo; Shah said.
He began his speech by paying rich tributes to legendary freedom fighter and Hindutva icon Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on his death anniversary.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday expressed regret over remarks made during the Assembly proceedings, saying statements were made in the heat of the moment and that he had no objection if they are expunged from the record.
"I leave it to the Speaker. If any unparliamentary words were used by me in my speech yesterday, they may be removed from the record. I have no objection," Abdullah said.
The Assembly witnessed noisy scenes for the second consecutive day as BJP members demanded an apology from the CM over his "unparliamentary" remarks against them before walking out of the House in protest during the Question Hour.
"As far as the matter is concerned, sometimes things are said in the heat of emotions. What I said hurt him, and I regret that. However, whatever I said was about them; I did not bring any of his family members into it. His field commanders, while leaving, dragged my parents and my late grandfather into it. But I will let that go as well," Abdullah told the House here.
Ahead of the CM's statement, BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma said that he believed that nothing very serious had been said (by his party legislators) and maintained that there could have been a "slip of the tongue."
CM Abdullah said that he shared cordial relations with legislators across party lines and had been interacting with all MLAs over the past one and a half years. "Had I been allowed to speak earlier, I would have clarified and withdrawn my remarks. But I was not given the opportunity to do so at the time," he said.
Reiterating his responsibility as the CM, Abdullah said that he represented voters from all regions and had responded to questions raised by the Opposition, despite some being difficult to answer.&nbsp;
He further cautioned that disruptions in the House could hamper the passage of grants related to key departments, including Education, Health and Social Welfare, adding that he did not want voters from any constituency to feel ignored.

BJP legislators staged a sit-in and raised slogans in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, demanding an apology from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over alleged unparliamentary remarks, disrupting proceedings.

BJP legislators on Wednesday trooped into the well of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and staged a sit-in to press for Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's apology over his "unparliamentary remarks" against them.
This happened shortly after the BJP members, barring Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, returned to the House at the end of the Question Hour after staging a walkout on the issue earlier.
BJP members gathered in the first row and continued chanting slogans against the government and seeking apology from the chief minister.
However, the speaker said they cannot raise the issue again after walking out from the House on the issue.
The BJP claimed that the chief minister left the House on seeing them entering the Assembly.
The speaker asked the House not to record the BJP protest and continued the proceedings. Later, they gathered in the well and staged a sit-in.
Earlier, the Assembly witnessed noisy scenes for over 30 minutes during the Question Hour.
As the House assembled for the day, BJP legislator Sham Lal Sharma stood up and demanded that the Leader of the House should apologise for his remarks or a statement be made by the speaker in absence of the chief minister.
"Such an incident has no precedent. The language used by the chief minister, the Leader of the House, is not language that can be used in any Parliament...I want to ask the Leader of the House whether he withdraws the words he used yesterday in this House about the BJP legislative party," Sharma said.
"If he does not withdraw them, then we leave it to his conscience &mdash; what his inner voice tells him &mdash; whether the words used in this House were appropriate or not. If the chief minister is not present here, then I leave it to the Chair and to make a response. It is your responsibility to say something about this matter," he said.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather tried to persuade the BJP members to allow the Question Hour to continue and rake up the issue when the Leader of the House is on the floor.
"Whatever happened yesterday (Tuesday) was unfortunate. Let the chief minister come and if he wishes he can make a statement. I can't make a statement on his behalf," the speaker said.
Health minister Sakeena Itoo accused BJP members of using unparliamentary words as well, particularly against Deputy chief minister Surinder Choudhary and speaking lies in the house.
Choudhary suggested the chair to examine all the unparliamentary words used from both sides and expunge these from the records to continue the proceedings without any disruption.
Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma opposed the suggestion and refused to budge and later led the walkout, chanting slogans like "derogatory sarkar hai hai and unparliamentary sarkar hai hai" besides 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'.
Pandemonium broke out in the House during Abdullah's speech on Tuesday when BJP members objected to some of his remarks against them and demanded an apology.
Abdullah was winding up the discussion on the Union Territory's Budget presented on February 6 when BJP members termed certain remarks made by him "unparliamentary."
While the chief minister has ruled out apologising to BJP members for the remarks, saying he was willing to withdraw his words but was not allowed to speak amid repeated disruptions, Sharma said the party would not allow the House to function until the CM tendered an unconditional apology on the floor of the House.

Congress' women MPs in the Lok Sabha wrote to Speaker Om Birla on Monday, claiming that under pressure from the ruling party to defend the "non-appearance" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he made grave allegations against them. They urged the Speaker to act as an impartial custodian of the Lower House.
Their letter to the Speaker comes days after Birla stated in the House that he had "concrete information" that many Congress members might move towards Prime Minister Modi's seat and carry out "some unexpected act" as a result of which he had requested him not to come to the House to reply to the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President's address.
Speaking about the letter signed by her, along with other women MPs of the Congress, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, "There is so much pressure on the Speaker which is not right. There is no question of anyone raising a hand on the PM or do anything like this. There are 11 women MPs, they are all serious MPs."
"He (Birla) should not have made the statement, he has been pressured to say it by the government and that is why he made the statement because Modi ji did not have the courage to come to the House that day so the Speaker is giving clarification on his behalf. This is wrong," she told reporters.
In their letter, the women MPs of the Congress in the Lok Sabha said that, clearly pressured by the ruling party to defend the "non-appearance of the Prime Minister", Birla issued a statement making grave allegations against the women MPs of the party.
"We are being targeted simply because we have consistently fought against Prime Minister Narender Modi's anti-people government and demanded accountability from him. His absence from the House was not due to any threat from us, it was an act of fear," said the letter signed by MPs like Priyanka Gandhi, Jyothimani, R Sudha, Varsha Gaikwad and Jyotsna Mahant.

"He (PM) did not have the courage to face the Opposition. We are Members of Parliament from the Indian National Congress, a party that stands for love, peace, constitutional values, and human dignity. We do not believe in violence and intimidation. We are brave women elected representatives who will not be silenced by intimidation," the Congress' women MPs said.
"We believe that transparency is the only way to restore the dignity of the Speaker's office and the credibility of this House," they added.
The women MPs further said they have the utmost respect for the Speaker's office and for his good self. "However, it is amply clear that you are under sustained pressure from the ruling party. We urge you once again to act as the impartial custodian of the Lok Sabha. We will stand with you and support you wholeheartedly in this endeavour," the women MPs said.
"Let history remember you as one who stood for what was right in the most trying circumstances and upheld constitutional propriety for the good of the nation. Let it not remember you as one who bowed to pressure from those who leave no stone unturned in subverting constitutional values and damaging the democratic fabric of our nation," they added.
In the letter, the women MPs said they are writing to Birla with deep anguish and a strong sense of constitutional responsibility. "It is extremely unfortunate that you, as the Hon'ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the constitutional custodian of this august house, have been forced by the ruling party to make: false, baseless, and defamatory allegations against women Members of Parliament belonging to the Opposition, particularly from the Congress," the MPs said.
"The Speaker's Chair is a constitutional office meant to protect the dignity of Parliament, ensure fairness, and safeguard the rights of all Members, irrespective of party affiliation," the MPs added.
During the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address, established parliamentary convention mandates that both the ruling party and the opposition are allowed to speak, after which the prime minister replies, they said.
"Yet, for the past four consecutive days, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, has been deliberately denied this opportunity in the Lok Sabha. This is unprecedented and indefensible," they said.
On the other hand, eight members of Parliament from the INDIA bloc were suspended on the behest of the ruling party and a BJP MP was permitted to speak in a vulgar and obscene manner about former prime ministers, they said.
"...At 5 pm, violating conventional procedure, the prime minister was scheduled to speak in the Lok Sabha. All members of the INDIA alliance rose in protest and the prime minister failed to appear in the House," they said.
"The next day, clearly pressured by the ruling party to defend the non-appearance of the prime minister, you issued a statement making grave allegations against the women MPs of the Congress," the MPs said.
In an unprecedented development, the Lok Sabha passed the Motion of Thanks on Thursday last without the prime minister's customary reply that was scheduled a day earlier in the face of relentless sloganeering by opposition members.
An anguished Lok Sabha Speaker last Thursday said he had "concrete information" that many Congress members might move towards Prime Minister Modi's seat and carry out "some unexpected act" as a result of which he had requested him not to come to the House to reply to the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President's address.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Monday said former Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar died just days after his revelation that he had a file on BJP's scam and asserted the chain of events was "mysterious".
Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Raut also claimed Ajit Pawar had decided to sever ties with the BJP and rejoin his uncle and NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar.
"Ajit Pawar was constantly saying that he has a file of the BJP's scam and he will make a revelation of this. He said this on January 15 and he died in an accident in the next 10 days. This is mysterious," Raut said. Ajit Pawar died in a plane crash in Baramati on January 28.
During the civic body election campaign, Pawar had claimed he had a file of BJP's corruption when it was in power in the state between 1995 and 1999 along with the undivided Shiv Sena.
"I had suspicion since the day Ajit Pawar revealed that he has a file of BJP's scam. This means Ajit Dada had decided to sever ties with the BJP. I could see clearly that Ajit Dada again wanted to get back with Sharad Pawar," Raut claimed.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP further said although Sharad Pawar has made it clear that Ajit Pawar's death was an accident and there should be no politics over it, the octogenarian leader will also realise this is not as simple as it looks.
"A person like Ajit Pawar sits in an aircraft and there is no other important person in the aircraft, there is no OSD. There is no maintenance certificate," Raut claimed.
Raut said Ajit Pawar going back to his original home was a defeat for the Bharatiya Janata Party.
This would have been a turning point in the country's politics and BJP's terror would have ended, he added.
The Rajya Sabha MP also claimed Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party has become a vassal of the BJP.
Raut's allegations drew a sharp response from BJP MLC Chitra Wagh, who said he was using someone's death for his own interests by making reckless and unsubstantiated claims.
"If Ajit Pawar had any documents against the BJP, and if they have not been burnt, then they should be traced and collected. Raut is free to approach the court," said Wagh, who is also her party's state women's wing chief.
She added sarcastically that Raut could even move an international court, as he does not believe in anything that is Indian.

In a three-cornered contest for the post of mayor of the Chandigarh civic body, BJP nominee Joshi secured 18 votes, Aam Aadmi Party candidate Yogesh Dhingra got 11 votes, while the Congress' Gurpreet Singh Gabi secured seven votes.
The polls were conducted by a show of hands instead of the previous practice of a secret ballot. After raising their hands, councillors also gave their verbal confirmation before the presiding officer, Ramneek Singh Bedi, a nominated councillor, who conducted the election for the post of mayor.
In the 35-member House of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the BJP has 18 councillors, the AAP has 11, and the Congress has six. The Chandigarh MP also has a voting right as an ex officio member of the 35-member municipal corporation.
Sitting MP Manish Tewari of the Congress raised his hand in support of his party's nominee Gurpreet Singh Gabi.
Congress and AAP did not forge an alliance for the mayoral polls this time.
After BJP's Joshi was declared the new mayor of Chandigarh, he conducted the elections for the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. The Congress abstained from voting in this election.

Addressing a gathering at the party headquarters here, Modi described 45-year-old Nabin as a "millennial" with youthful energy and vast experience in the organisation, which will prove to be of immense help for the party.
In his 40-minute speech, the prime minister repeatedly referred to Nabin as 'mananiya' (honourable) and listed out the achievements of his government over the last 11 years, which he described as giving an account of his work to the party president.
"Every word of his will give us a new direction. His guidance will be a priceless asset that will chart our future course of action," the prime minister said, addressing the gathering attended by senior leaders like Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Amit Shah, J P Nadda, along with Union ministers, chief ministers of BJP-ruled states, and scores of party workers.
"I, too, as a party worker, was giving an account of my work to the new president. I have given an account of my work. He will now write my CR. I am awaiting his guidance," Modi said, referring to the work of the BJP-led NDA government.
Nabin was declared the BJP national president at the party headquarters at the conclusion of the Sanghatan Parv, which saw elections to various party posts from the booth level to the national level.
"When it comes to party matters, mananiya (honourable) Nitin Nabin ji... I am a worker, and you are my boss," Modi said.

"Now, honourable Nitin Nabin ji is the president of all of us, and his responsibility is not just to manage the BJP, but also to ensure coordination among all NDA allies," the prime minister said.
Modi said the new BJP chief belongs to an era in which people heard the news on the radio in childhood and are now well-versed in using Artificial Intelligence.
"Nitin ji has both youthful energy and a great deal of experience," he said.
The prime minister said infiltrators pose a very serious threat to country's security and stressed that identifying them and sending them back is extremely necessary.
Targeting the Congress, the prime minister urged BJP workers to learn from the mistakes committed by the grand old party and not to repeat them.
He said in 1984, the Congress had won more than 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections with more than 50 per cent of the votes.
"But today, the Congress is yearning to cross the 100-seat mark," the prime minister said.
He asked BJP workers to identify the bad qualities of the Congress that have brought them to the brink of self-destruction.
"We have to save ourselves from these bad qualities. We have to ensure that we do not embrace these bad qualities. Wherever we have maintained distance from such qualities, we have emerged invincible," Modi said.
The prime minister said the Congress never reviewed its catastrophic decline, fearing it would raise questions about the very family that has captured the party.
"That is why they keep finding excuses. They have even lost the courage to find the real reason for the decline," Modi said.
Modi said the BJP conducts a dispassionate review of its performance even after winning elections and tries to improve in regions where it faces a loss.
He cited the recent victory of the BJP in the civic bodies polls in Maharashtra and asserted that the party was not resting on its laurels, but has started work on the next round of elections.
"The BJP is a tradition. The BJP is a family. We value relationships more than membership. The BJP is such a tradition that functions not by a post but by process. Here, holding a post is an arrangement, and carrying out the work is a lifelong responsibility," Modi said.
"In the BJP, presidents change, but ideals do not change. Leadership changes, but the direction does not change," he said.
The prime minister said under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi, the BJP saw a journey from zero to the summit.
"In this century, leaders like M Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari, along with many of our senior colleagues, expanded the organisation. Under the leadership of Rajnath ji, for the first time, the BJP achieved a full majority on its own," Modi said.
"Then, under the leadership of Amit Shah, the BJP formed governments in many states and came to power at the Centre for a second consecutive term. Under the leadership of J P Nadda, the BJP grew stronger from the panchayat to Parliament," Modi said.
The prime minister said the BJP began its political journey as "a party with a difference" and over the years has emerged as a party of good governance.
"The country has seen various models of governance after independence, the Congress' model of dynastic politics, the Left's model, the model of regional parties, and the era of unstable governments.
"But today, the country is witnessing the BJP's development model, one marked by stability, good governance, and sensitivity," the prime minister said.

Newly appointed BJP president Nitin Nabin has been given top-tier armed VIP security by the Central government, officials said on Tuesday.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will provide a Z-category security detail for Nabin. A few weeks ago, the Union Home Ministry instructed the CRPF to take charge of his security following his announcement as the new BJP party leader, officials said.
Armed CRPF commandos will accompany him during his travels across the country, they added. Nabin was formally declared the BJP president on Tuesday.
The 45-year-old five-time Bihar MLA was elected unopposed on Monday as the BJP national president, the youngest ever to occupy the top post at a time when the saffron party seeks to further expand its footprint with key state elections around the corner.
His predecessor, J P Nadda, also received a similar security cover from the government, with the CRPF VIP security wing managing the arrangements.
The VIP security cover, under the Central protection list, ranges from the highest Z-plus (ASL) to Z-plus, Z, Y, Y-plus, and X categories.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Gandhi family and several other politicians and high-ranking individuals are protected by the CRPF, which has approximately 200 VIPs under its umbrella.

K Laxman, Returning Officer for BJP organisational polls, declared the results of the organisational elections and handed over the certificate of election to 45-year-old Nabin, the youngest ever to occupy the top party post.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nadda, senior ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, among others, were present at the BJP headquarters to witness the leadership transition.
Nabin became the 12th president of the BJP, which was founded in 1980, the same year he was born.
The low-profile and unassuming Nabin had resigned as the minister for law and justice, urban development and housing in the Bihar government after he was appointed working president of the BJP on December 14.
"This election shows that in the BJP, leadership rises from hard work and dedication, not from dynastic privilege," Laxman said, announcing the outcome of the elections.
"Today is a very historic occasion, when our young, energetic, and talented Nitin Nabin is taking charge as the National President of the world's largest political party, the BJP. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to him on my behalf and on behalf of crores of workers," Nadda said, addressing the gathering.

Later, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and other state leaders submitted another set of nomination papers in support of Nabin, who was appointed as the working president last month.
Chief Ministers Yogi Adityanath, Pushkar Singh Dhami, Nayab Singh Saini and Pramod Sawant were also present on the occasion.
Leaders from Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Assam, Jharkhand and other states also submitted nomination papers in support of Nabin.
Nabin is likely to be elected unopposed as the BJP's 12th national president, with top party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, backing his candidature.
The BJP national president is elected by an electoral college comprising representatives from the party's national council and state councils, with the process overseen by its national returning officer.
According to the BJP's constitution, any 20 members of the electoral college of a state can jointly propose the name of a person -- who has been an active member for four terms and has 15 years of membership -- for the post of the national president.
However, such a joint proposal should come from not less than five states where elections have been completed for the national council, it stipulates.

The BJP on Friday released the schedule to elect its national president, saying the nominations for the post will be filed on January 19 and the name of the new chief will be announced the next day.
According to party sources, BJP national working president Nitin Nabin is likely to be elected as the national president unopposed, as there is least possibility of any other leader joining the fray.
The organisational poll schedule released by BJP national returning officer K Laxman showed that the nomination for the election of the party chief can be filed between 2 pm and 4 pm on January 19, and the nominations can be withdrawn between 5 pm and 6 pm on the same day.
Scrutiny of the nomination papers will be carried out between 4 pm and 5 pm on January 19.&nbsp;
"Polling will be held if needed on January 20, and an official announcement of the name of the new BJP national president will be made the same day," Laxman said.
Nabin is likely to replace JP Nadda as BJP national president with party leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, backing his candidature for the post, sources said.
Incidentally, Nadda was also first appointed as the BJP's national working president in June 2019 and eventually was elected unopposed to the post of party national president on January 20, 2020, succeeding Amit Shah.
Nabin, 45, the son of late BJP veteran and former MLA Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, is seen within the party as a dynamic leader who is ideologically rooted and deeply committed to the organisation. He comes from the RSS background.
Nabin represents Bankipur assembly constituency in Bihar and has served as a minister in the Bihar government twice.

As Maharashtra heads to the elections on Thursday for 29 municipal corporations, the spotlight is on Mumbai, where the BJP-led Mahayuti is locked in a battle with the united Thackeray front for control of the cash-rich BMC.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has predicted that MNS leader Raj Thackeray would emerge as the biggest loser in his alliance with cousin and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray.
He also dismissed the coming together of both NCP factions in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad as merely a localised development.
Fadnavis rued that Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar broke the rule that the alliance partners will not speak against each other.
CM Fadnavis led the ruling alliance&rsquo;s canvassing, traversing the state to campaign for candidates of the Mahayuti, which includes the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
NCP, the third partner in the Mahayuti, was strategically excluded to attract "non-Hindu" voters, observers said.
This will be the Shiv Sena&rsquo;s first Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election since the 2022 split, when Eknath Shinde broke away with a majority of the party&rsquo;s legislators, along with its name and symbol.
The undivided Shiv Sena had held sway over the country&rsquo;s richest civic body for 25 years.
Polling for the 2,869 seats spread across 893 wards will begin at 7.30 am and conclude at 5.30 pm on January 15.
A total of 3.48 crore voters are eligible to decide the fate of 15,931 candidates, including 1,700 in Mumbai and 1,166 in Pune.
Counting of votes will take place on January 16.
More than 25,000 police personnel, including senior officers, will be deployed across Mumbai to oversee elections to the BMC and vote counting.
Except for Mumbai, the other 28 urban bodies have multi-member wards.
In a political turn ahead of the elections, estranged cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray reunited after two decades in their bid to consolidate Marathi votes, even as rival NCP factions forged a local alliance in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
In this election, the Opposition Congress has asserted its presence in Mumbai by stepping out of the shadow of its Maha Vikas Aghadi allies - Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP).
The Congress has joined hands with Prakash Ambedkar&rsquo;s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) and the Rashtriya Samaj Paksh in the state capital, even as it contests independently in Nagpur.
Elections to 29 municipal corporations are being held after a gap of over six years, with their terms having ended between 2020 and 2023.
Of these, nine fall within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the most urbanised belt in India.
The battlegrounds include Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Mumbai, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Ulhasnagar, Thane, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Mira-Bhayandar, Nanded-Waghala, Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Latur, Malegaon, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Jalna and Ichalkaranji.
Chief Minister Fadnavis, along with his deputies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, campaigned extensively across Maharashtra, while cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray concentrated their efforts on Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where Uddhav held a rally.
Telangana minister Mohammad Azharuddin, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai were also among the star campaigners for the polls.
Populist promises for women were the highlight of the manifestos of both the Mahayuti and the Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS.
The Mahayuti has promised a 50 per cent concession for women in BEST bus travel, while the Thackeray cousins have assured a Rs 1,500 monthly allowance for women domestic helps and a property tax waiver on houses up to 700 sq ft.
The Congress manifesto, by contrast, prioritises combating Mumbai&rsquo;s pollution, upgrading the BEST fleet, and strengthening the city&rsquo;s financial health.
The race for Mumbai&rsquo;s mayoral post took centre stage in the campaign, with the BJP claiming that a Sena (UBT) victory could lead to a Muslim mayor, a charge the Uddhav Thackeray-led party countered by assuring voters of a Marathi mayor.
CM Fadnavis also guaranteed that the mayor will be a "Hindu and Marathi".
In the 227-ward Mumbai, the BJP is contesting 137 seats, the Shiv Sena 90, while the NCP is fighting separately on 94 seats.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) has fielded 163 candidates, the MNS 52, the Congress 143 and the VBA 46.
The Congress has fielded 1,263 candidates across the rest of the state.
After the end of the campaigning on Tuesday, Fadnavis said Raj Thackeray will be the biggest loser in the alliance with his cousin, Uddhav Thackeray.
Downplaying the coming together of the rival NCPs in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad as a "localised phenomenon", he said the BJP will react only if both factions decide to ally after the polls, which he felt was unlikely at the moment.
Fadnavis also remarked that the Thackerays lacked wholehearted commitment in their campaign and appeared "unwilling to stake their political prestige".
While asserting that the BJP remains the central force around which Maharashtra&rsquo;s politics will revolve in the future, he acknowledged that electoral setbacks do not spell the end for any party or leader. Those who strive to make a comeback can still find success, he added.

Following the December civic polls, reports emerged that the BJP had joined hands with the Congress and Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) under the banner of &lsquo;Ambernath Vikas Aghadi&rsquo; to form leadership in the Ambernath Municipal Council, sidelining ally Shiv Sena. Similarly, in Akot Municipal Council in Akola district, the BJP reportedly formed an alliance with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and several other parties.
However, CM Fadnavis made it clear that such arrangements were not sanctioned by the party&rsquo;s senior leadership. &ldquo;I am making it very clear that any alliance with the Congress or the AIMIM will not be accepted. If any local leader has taken such a decision on their own, it is wrong in terms of discipline and action will be taken,&rdquo; he said, adding that instructions had already been issued to undo such alliances.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut criticised the BJP, saying, &ldquo;What happened in Akot and Ambernath shows frivolous behaviour of the BJP. The party can forge an alliance with anyone to grab power.&rdquo; Notably, BJP, Ajit Pawar-led NCP, and Eknath Shinde&rsquo;s Shiv Sena remain allies in the state&rsquo;s Mahayuti government.
In Ambernath, the BJP reportedly secured a post-poll understanding with Congress and NCP, together claiming a majority of 31 seats, despite Shiv Sena emerging as the single largest party with 27 councillors. BJP councillor Tejashree Karanjule Patil was elected Ambernath Municipal Council president on Wednesday, defeating Sena&rsquo;s Manisha Walekar. The election for the vice-president is scheduled soon.
CM Fadnavis emphasised that such alliances would not be tolerated and that disciplinary action would be taken against local leaders who defied party directions. &ldquo;Any local leader who went ahead with such alliances has acted against organisational discipline and will face consequences,&rdquo; he said.
In Akot, the BJP formed the &lsquo;Akot Vikas Manch&rsquo; with AIMIM and support from multiple parties, including both factions of Shiv Sena, NCP, and Prahar Janshakti Party. The BJP won 11 of the 35 council seats, with AIMIM securing five. Maya Dhule of BJP was elected mayor, while Ravi Thakur was appointed group leader. The alliance&rsquo;s strength stands at 25 councillors, while Congress and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi remain in opposition.
Despite these local arrangements, CM Fadnavis reiterated that BJP&rsquo;s central leadership does not approve of post-poll alliances with Congress or AIMIM, stressing party discipline and warning that corrective steps had been initiated.

A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria, however, granted bail to activists Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmad in the case.

Addressing a press conference Bhubaneswar, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra alleged that Banerjee, while addressing a public meeting in Bankura district, threatened the Home Minister of India that she "allowed" him to come out of the hotel where he was staying in Kolkata.
Patra said, &ldquo;Mamata Banerjee has threatened the Home Minister of India in words which cannot even be thought of. We have seen it. She said that you (Shah) are hiding in a hotel. If we want, you cannot step out of the hotel. You are lucky that we allowed you to come out of the hotel.&rdquo;
Claiming that she had done this "for the sake of infiltrators", he asserted that it is not only a threat to the Union home minister, but also to the entire population of the country.
"You (Banerjee) are not just threatening Amit Shah; you are threatening India," Patra said, adding that this is not the first time that such an incident has happened in West Bengal.
"Our party president JP Nadda&rsquo;s cavalcade was attacked during the previous elections by infiltrators,&rdquo; the Puri MP said.
Patra asserted that Shah has raised issues such as corruption, injustice, and especially the politics surrounding infiltrators in West Bengal.
He also alleged that around 300 BJP activists were killed in West Bengal by goons of the TMC, while 3,000 others had to flee their homes.
"This is Hitler-sahi and tanasahi,&rdquo; Patra alleged. &ldquo;There have been attacks on democracy in Bengal. This is happening in a state which led the country all along. Bengal is now destroyed by Mamata Banerjee,&rdquo; he said.
Patra alleged that the Trinamool Congress supremo has a problem with the names of infiltrators being removed from the electoral rolls.
&ldquo;Mamata Banerjee is threatening the Home Minister of the country for the sake of infiltrators,&rdquo; he alleged.
BJP will form a government with a two-thirds majority in West Bengal, and the party is preparing for that, he said.
Patra said, &ldquo;West Bengal is for Indians and Bengalis, and not for infiltrators. Mamata Banerjee is not allotting land for fencing on the (international) border. She is more worried about infiltrators and Rohingyas than the state. Tunnels are constructed to bring infiltrators, and efforts are made to give them recognition. Once the BJP forms the government, each infiltrator would be identified and evicted.&rdquo;
Noting that Bengal has the history of leading the country on several fronts, Patra alleged that the state&rsquo;s economy, industrialisation and development has suffered a lot due to the &ldquo;appeasement&rdquo; politics of Banerjee.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the BJP is proposing "elimination of the Constitution" that grants equal rights to all and vowed to create a system of opposition's resistance that will succeed in removing the party from power.
Speaking at the Hertie School in Berlin last week, Gandhi also alleged that the BJP has launched a full-scale assault and has captured the institutional framework of the country to help use it as a tool for building its political power and that is what the Opposition is fighting against.
In an hour-long video released by the Congress on Monday, Gandhi said India's largest and complex democracy is a global asset and the "assault" on the Indian democratic system is also an attack on the global democratic system.
"What the BJP is proposing essentially is the elimination of the Constitution. Elimination of the idea of equality between states, elimination of the idea of equality between languages and religions, elimination of the idea of the central core of the Constitution which is that every individual will have the same value," the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha said to a group of students at the Hertie School.
In the video, 'Politics is the art of listening', Gandhi said, "We will create a method, a system of opposition resistance that will succeed. But, we're not fighting the BJP. You have to understand that we're fighting their capture of the Indian institutional structure."
Answering queries of students, Gandhi claimed that there is a weaponization of the institutional framework.
"We fundamentally believe that there is a problem with the electoral machinery in India. Second thing is that there is a wholesale capture of our institutional framework. There is a full-scale assault taking place on the institution framework of our country," he claimed.
He noted that there is an atmosphere in India where the institutions are not performing the role they should be performing.
Gandhi said while the Europeans struggled to build a European Union, India built an economic and political union in 1947, which was based on the Constitution.
"If you are going to have any conversation about democracy on the planet, you cannot ignore by far the largest and most complex democracy in the world. That is why I say Indian democracy is a global public good, it is not just an Indian asset, it is a global asset.
"So when I talk of the attack on the Indian democratic system, I don't say it but it is actually an attack not just on the Indian democratic system, it is an attack on the global democratic system," Gandhi observed.

Before considering APJ Abdul Kalam for the eleventh presidential candidate of India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suggested Atal Bihari Vajpayee's name for the President's post and hand over the prime ministership to Lal Krishna Advani.
However, the then-prime minister refused, stating that his becoming President by virtue of his majority would set a wrong precedent.
Ashok Tandon, who served as Vajpayee's media advisor, related the episode in his book Atal Smaran, published by Prabhat Prakashan.
Kalam was elected the 11th President in 2002 with the support of both, then ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition. He served in this position until 2007.
Tandon, who served as the ex-prime minister's media advisor from 1998 to 2004, writes that Vajpayee, on the other hand, flatly rejected his party's suggestion that he should move to Rashtrapati Bhavan and hand over the prime ministership to his second-in-command, Lal Krishna Advani.
According to Tandon, "Vajpayee was not ready for this. He believed that for any popular prime minister, becoming President by virtue of majority would not be a good sign for Indian parliamentary democracy. It would set a very wrong precedent, and he would be the last person to support such a move."
Tandon writes that Vajpayee invited leaders of the main opposition party, the Congress, so that a consensus could be built for the post of President. "I remember that Sonia Gandhi, Pranab Mukherjee, and Dr. Manmohan Singh came to meet him. Vajpayee officially revealed for the first time that the NDA had decided to nominate Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam as their candidate for the presidential election... There was a moment of silence in the meeting. Then Sonia Gandhi broke the silence and said that they were surprised by his choice, and that they had no option but to support him, but they would discuss his proposal and then make a decision," he says.
Tandon relates many other events that took place during Vajpayee's tenure as prime minister and about Vajpayee's relationships with several leaders. On the Atal-Advani duo, he writes that despite differences on some policy issues, the relationship between the two leaders never soured publicly. He also thanked the BJP's leadership for the trust reposed in him before he left for Delhi.
"The BJP not only promotes youths but also guides and curates them to achieve larger goals. It is the only party that allows its grassroots workers to thrive," he said, while leaving for the airport here from his residence.
He urged party workers to work patiently to strengthen the organisation.
Earlier in the day, Nabin, who is Bihar's PWD minister, pledged to carry forward the work of his late father and former BJP MLA Nabin Kishor Prasad Sinha.
He paid floral tributes to a statue of his father at a park in Patna.
"I have always worked on the ideas of my father, who considered the party as his mother and prioritised the nation over everything. I think that is the reason the party has blessed me with this opportunity to continue working with BJP workers," he said.
He also visited Patna's Mahavir Mandir to offer prayers.
Nabin was appointed on Sunday as the BJP national working president and is likely to eventually succeed JP Nadda as its national president, signalling a generational shift in the ruling party.
He expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and praised his leadership.
"Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, development has reached every town and village of the country. At the same time, Bharatiya Janata Party has also expanded its footprint and stands today as the party of the poor," he asserted.
Nabin emphasised that "no class in India today is left untouched" by the development schemes of the NDA government.
He claimed that the PM has taken the idea of 'Antyodaya' to every nook and corner of the country.
"Antyodaya was pioneered by personalities like Deendayal Upadhyaya and Syama Prasad Mookerjee, and promoted by Atal Bihari Vajpayee," Nabin said, adding that "now PM Modi has taken it to every village and town of the nation".
On the question of the party's strategy for the West Bengal elections, he said, "Be it Bengal, Assam or Uttar Pradesh, our party workers are always ready. This is the beauty of Bharatiya Janata Party. Others work during elections, but BJP karyakartas work 24x7."
Nabin, 45, is considered dynamic, ideologically rooted and deeply committed to the organisation, party leaders said.
He also comes from the RSS background.
A five-time MLA, Nabin represents Bankipur assembly constituency in Bihar and has served twice as a minister in the state government.

These civic body bypolls were a litmus test for the BJP, as they were its first big electoral battle after coming to power in Delhi in February this year.
BJP's Suman Kumar Gupta defeated Aam Aadmi Party candidate Harsh Sharma by a margin of 1,182 votes. The saffron party also comfortably won the Shalimar Bagh B ward, with Anita Jain defeating AAP's Babita Rana by a margin of over 10,000 votes. The Shalimar Bagh B ward was vacated after sitting BJP councillor Rekha Gupta won the assembly polls in February and became Delhi's chief minister.
AAP won the Mundka and Dakshinpuri wards, while Congress's Suresh Choudhary won the Sangam Vihar A ward by defeating BJP's Subhajeet Gautam. Choudhary polled 12,766 votes while his opponent managed to get 9,138 votes.
BJP's Veena Asija was locked in a close fight with AAP's Seema Goyal but surged ahead to win the Ashok Vihar ward by a margin of 405 votes.
All India Forward Bloc candidate Mohd Imran won the Chandni Mahal seat by defeating AAP's Mudassar Usman by a margin of 4,692 votes.
The BJP also won the Dichaon Kalan and Greater Kailash wards and the Dwarka-B ward, which was earlier held by its Kamaljeet Sehrawat. Sehrawat is now a BJP MP. The saffron party's Manisha Rani won the Dwarka-B ward by a comfortable margin of 9,100 votes against AAP's Raj Bala.
AAP's Rajan Arora won the Naraina seat by just 148 votes against the BJP's Chandrakanta Shivani.
The counting of votes for the MCD bypolls to 12 wards began at 8 am amid tight security. Of the 12 wards where voting was held on November 30, nine were earlier held by the BJP and the remaining by AAP.
The State Election Commission, Delhi, had set up 10 counting centres, one each at Kanjhawala, Pitampura, Bharat Nagar, Civil Lines, Rouse Avenue, Dwarka, Najafgarh, Gole Market, Pushp Vihar and Mandawali.
The strong rooms where the EVMs are stored after polling were secured with adequate security measures, including round-the-clock CCTV surveillance and the deployment of paramilitary and Delhi Police personnel.
The vote percentage in the bypolls was 38.51 per cent as compared to 50.47 per cent in the MCD elections held for 250 wards in 2022.
