Commonwealth Games were declared open on Thursday after a 2-hour long opening ceremony ended at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The ceremony for the opening of the 22nd edition of the quadrennial event showcased the city's rich cultural heritage and was kickstarted with drummer-percussionist Abraham Paddy Tetteh taking the stage followed by Indian classical vocalist and composer Ranjana Ghatak. Prince Charles declared the Games open on behalf of the Queen Elizabeth II after narrating the message on the baton that reached the venue despite the Covid-19 challengesIndia's ace shuttler and 2-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu alongside the men's team captain Manpreet Singh led the Indian contingent. Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain, Bajrang Punia, Ravi Dahiya, Manika Batra were also present in the squad. India will be represented by 215 athletes who will participate in 141 events across 19 sporting disciplines. The spectacular show ended with a performance from Duran Duran, a band who started their journey in the city of Birmingham 44years ago. The ceremony marked the beginning of the first multi-sporting event that will be held without major restrictions since the Covid-19 pandemic struck. Prepare yourself for a whole lot of action for the span of the next 11-days as over 5000 athletes from 72 nations compete across 280 events across 19 sports and 15 venues. CWG 2022: India's Women's Fours team win Gold in Lawn Bowls
Not many people in India knew about Lawn Bowls but India's Women's Fours team made sure the country sat up and took notice of them on Tuesday.
The team comprising of Lovely Chaubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey etched their names in history books as they beat South Africa 17-10 in the final to win an elusive Gold at Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. India was trailing 8-10 but then the ladies staged a brilliant comeback and claimed 9 points on the trot.
This is the first time an Indian side finished on the podium in this event at the CWG. What made this feat even more special was the fact that the girls didn&rsquo;t even have the facility to train on the greens until a couple of weeks prior to the Games.

An Indian Olympic Association official told PTI that a second player had tested positive for Covid-19 before departure and both players will remain in India

Indian women's cricket team suffered a major setback before the start of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Batter Sabbhineni Meghana and young all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar have tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss the flight to Birmingham.
India will lock horns with Australia in their first game of the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Friday. The Women in Blue had their first practice session scheduled late on Tuesday.&nbsp;
An Indian Olympic Association official told PTI that a second player had tested positive for Covid-19 before departure and both players will remain in India and will miss the league stage
However, Meghana and Vastrakar can only join back the squad if they test negative as per the BCCI protocol. Interestingly, women's cricket is making its debut at the Commonwealth Games this year.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had earlier informed that only one player had tested positive and the team continued training in the special camp at Bengaluru before leaving for Birmingham on Sunday.

India had a dominant start to their Birmingham 2022 campaign. While the Indian contingent registered wins in table tennis, boxing, squash, badminton, swimming, Hockey, they had to face disappointment in cricket, cycling & triathlon on Day 1.
SQUASH
India's youngest star at Birmingham 2022 turned heads as the 14-year-old Anahat Singh began her CWG campaign on a high. 
Anahat registered an easy 3-0 win against Jada Ross of St Vincent and Grenadine in her opening match of the women's singles event. The Delhi-based teenager defeated her 20-year-old opponent in straight sets of 11-5, 11-2 ad 11-0. 
Another debutant, Abhay Singh also triumphed 11-5, 11-5 against Joe Chapman of the British Virgin Islands in the men's singles round of 64.
SWIMMING
Srihari Nataraj saved the blushes for India in Swimming on Day 1 of the Commonwealth Games 2022.
The 21-year-old swimmer raced into the men's 100mt backstroke final after clocking 54.55 secs in his semi-final. He finished 4th in his semis and was 7th fastest overall, making the cut for the final.
Earlier in the day, Kushagra Rawat and Sajan Prakash failed to advance to the semifinal of their events respectively.
LAWN BOWLS
After a disappointing beginning to Day 1, the Indians finished on a strong note in the discipline with 2 wins. 
The pair of Sunil Bahadur and Dinesh Kumar defeated the Falkland Islands 36-4 in the men's pairs event. 
In the women's fours also, India registered victory after the quartet of Pinki, Lovely Chaubey, Nayanmoni Saikia, and Rupa Tirkey defeated the Cook Islands by 15-9.
 
Earlier in the day, India's badminton team won in the mixed team group match against Pakistan and Indian boxer Shiva Thapa also defeated Pakistan's Suleman Baloch in Round of 16 of the 63.5kg category. In Table Tennis too, India had a dominant performance as both the men's and the women's team won their respective group matches on Day 1. However, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side had to face disappointment as they lost their first group game against Australia by 3 wickets.

He will compete in the 65-kg category at Birmingham 2022. 
At Tokyo Olympics, Bajrang was not at his best and settled with a consolatory Bronze despite coming into the World's greatest sporting event as favourites.

However, the reigning CWG and Asian Games champion had overcome his mental blockage, defensive approach and internal demons now. And before travelling to the US for training, Punia said that he can feel the same energy and vibes which he used to experience during the 2018-19 phase.
Bajrang registered his place in India's squad for the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a narrow 2-1 win over his opponent in the final of the trials, conducted by the Wrestling Federation of India. With an aim to get better after injury, he has been honing his skills at US's Michigan University ahead of the Birmingham Games.

After braving injury to win bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, Bajrang Punia will be aiming to get back to his best with another glorious performance at the Commonwealth Games&nbsp;

Olympic Bronze medallist Bajrang Punia will be eyeing his third successive medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. With Silver and Gold in the previous two editions of the quadrennial event, India's hopes will be pinned on the ace wrestler to win back-to-back Golds. He will compete in the 65-kg category at Birmingham 2022.&nbsp;
At the Tokyo Olympics, Bajrang was not at his best, largely due to a leg injury but still managed to bring home the Bronze even as he started the tournament as favourite.

Indian badminton team left for Birmingham on July 25 from Hyderabad airport after completing the joint practice conducted by the Badminton Association of India which took place between July 18-24.
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) gave a send-off to the team and shared the images on Twitter. 
Indian badminton contingent consists of 10 athletes including two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and World Championships medalists Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen. 
Alongside Sindhu, Aakarshi Kashyap, Treesa Jolly, Gayatri P and Ashwini Ponappa will be in action in the women's category in Birmingham.
On the other hand, in the men's category, B Sumeeth Reddy and the previous edition's silver medalists doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will play for a podium finish alongside Srikanth and Sen. 
India is the defending champion in the badminton team mixed event and would look to repeat their previous performance this year. Srikanth and Sindhu, who both won the silver in Gold Coast, in 2018 are aiming to change the colour of their medal in Birmingham.
