Legendary Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj has passed away at his home in Lucknow in the early hours of Monday. Reportedly, the dancer fell sick on Sunday night when he was playing with his grandsons. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.
He would have turned 84 next month on 4th February. He was also known as Pandit-ji and Maharaj-ji by his disciples and followers. He was also the recipient of India's second-highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan.

Birju Maharaj Passes Away: Legendary Kathak dancer Birju Maharaj&nbsp;passed away on Monday. He was 83. An exponent of the Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Lucknow,&nbsp;Birju Maharaj&nbsp;was born as Brij Mohan Nath Mishra on February 4, 1938 in a well-known Kathak dancing family. Besides father Achchan Maharaj and uncles Shambhu and Lachchu Maharaj, he was shaped by the influence of Bindadeen Maharaj. Known for his perfect rhythm and expressive abhinaya, or gesture language, Birju Maharaj developed his own unique style.
