The TMC leadership on Thursday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks on Birbhum killings, stating that it negated the BJP's demand for imposition of President's Rule in West Bengal.
Modi, on Wednesday, described the killings in Birbhum as "heinous", and said the culprits should not be forgiven. He hoped that the state government would take all necessary steps to punish the perpetrators.
The PM also promised all help to Bengal in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comment proves that he, too, believes that it is the state government that should be conducting a probe into the matter. The demand for imposition of President's Rule by the BJP doesn't stand anymore," TMC state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said.
Ghosh, however, wondered why the PM "chose to maintain silence on similar incidents" in Uttar Pradesh "What happened in Birbhum is condemnable. No one can support such violence. The PM, too, has condemned it. But we wonder why he maintains silence when carnages and mass murders take place in the BJP-ruled states. Has he ever condemned such incidents in Hathras and Unnao in Uttar Pradesh? The answer is no," The TMC leader said at a press meet here.
Echoing him, state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said a "campaign was underway to malign Bengal".
"The state government has taken all necessary measures to nab the culprits and stand by the families," she maintained.
In response, the Bengal BJP leadership alleged that the TMC government was trying to “hush up the matter".
"Law and order is in the doldrums in Bengal. The state government is trying to shield the culprits," BJP state spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya said.

Trinamool Congress Rampurhat-1 block president Anarul Hossain was arrested on Thursday in connection with the killings in Bogtui village in West Bengal's Birbhum district, police said.
He was arrested from Tarapith in the district within hours of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directing the police to nab him for not paying attention to local people's apprehension of possible disturbance in the area, which ultimately snowballed into the carnage, a senior officer said.
Searches were conducted in various parts of the district including Hossain's residence, after which he was nabbed from Tarapith. Hossain was picked up from near a hotel after police tracked his mobile phone tower location, he said.
The local TMC leader will be questioned over the incident in which eight people were burnt alive on Tuesday, he added.
Meanwhile, Rampurhat police station inspector-in-charge Tridib Pramanik was suspended for negligence.

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed CFSL Delhi to immediately collect necessary materials for forensic examination at Bogtui village in Bengal’s Birbhum district, where at least eight people were charred to death in the suspected fallout of a TMC panchayat official’s murder.
The court asked the state government to file a report in the case before it by 2 pm on Thursday, when the matter will be taken up for hearing again.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava, taking up a suo motu petition and a set of PILs, ordered that CCTVs be installed at the crime scene in the presence of district judge, Purba Bardhaman, and recordings be done until further orders.
The bench, also comprising justice R Bharadwaj, directed a team of Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi to visit the place of incident and collect samples for examination without any delay.
It asked the DGP to ensure safety of witnesses, including that of a minor boy injured in the arson, in consultation with the district judge, Purba Bardhaman.
The court observed that suo motu petition has been registered for fair investigation in the case.
The petitioners in the PILs have prayed for a probe by the CBI or by any other agency which is not controlled by the state.
Advocate general representing the government opposed the prayer, stating an SIT was probing the matter and that there was no need to transfer the case to any other agency.
