Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said new data reinforced an earlier warning that the US could default on its debts as early as June 1, ahead of crunch talks Tuesday between President Joe Biden and Republican leaders.
The Treasury has warned of "catastrophic" consequences if the US runs out of cash to pay its bills, which would leave it unable to pay federal workers and trigger a likely surge in interest rates with a huge impact for businesses and mortgage holders.
"We still estimate Treasury will likely no longer be able to satisfy all of the government's obligations if Congress has not acted to raise or suspend the debt limit by early June, and potentially as early as June 1," she wrote on Monday in a letter to the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy.
The talks have a lot of ground to cover, with the two parties still sharply divided on the terms under which they will agree to lift the government's borrowing cap to pay for existing spending commitments.
Republicans continue to insist that Biden agree to significant spending cuts in exchange for their support to raise the debt ceiling, while Democrats have been calling for a "clean" increase of the borrowing limit with no strings attached.
They have accused Republicans of using extreme tactics to push their political agenda ahead of the so-called "X-date" -- the point at which the United States will be unable to meet its financial obligations.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has forecast that the X-date could be reached by June 15.

Joe Biden on OPEC snub: US will take action against Saudi Arabia

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters separately that the President was clear a day earlier that the US is re-evaluating the relationship with Saudi Arabia.

US President Joe Biden on Wednesday said his administration will take action against Saudi Arabia after the Riyadh-led OPEC+ alliance announced plans to cut oil production, a move that America said would support oil exporters such as Russia.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to react to Saudi Arabia, and they&rsquo;re (Congress) doing consultation when they come back. And we will take action,&rdquo; Biden told reporters at the White House.
He was responding to a question from lawmakers, including Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna, calling for a stopping of US arm sales to Saudi Arabia in the wake of the Kingdom&rsquo;s decision to reduce oil production.
Biden on Tuesday said there will be "consequences&rdquo; for Saudi Arabia as Riyadh other countries tied to OPEC have announced plans to cut oil production by 2 million barrels a day in response to the slowing economy, a move that the Biden administration said would support Russia.

&ldquo;This is a relationship that has existed over decades...And it's been built on a basis of bipartisan understanding. And the President wants to make sure that he is consulting closely with the Congress on a bipartisan basis as he re-evaluates,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;And so, he looks forward to engaging the Congress when they return. He will make his decisions about how we proceed with respect to the relationship on his timetable, having had the level of consultation and reflection that he is keen to have, because these are, of course, consequential decisions,&rdquo; Sullivan said.
&ldquo;He was clear yesterday that he has embarked on that process, and he's doing so with the purpose of looking out for US interests and values as we think about the future of the US-Saudi relationship,&rdquo; Sullivan said.
Sullivan said as the President has said from when he came into office, there is a range of interests and values that are implicated in the US-Saudi relationship and countries across that region and around the world.
&ldquo;And, you know, the President will examine all of that. But one question he's going to ask is: Is the nature of the relationships serving the interests and values of the United States? And what changes would make it better serve those interests and values?&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;The step that OPEC+ took last week with respect to energy that helped Russia raises real questions. And you've heard not just from the President, but from members of Congress of both parties on this,&rdquo; he told reporters.
&ldquo;So, I'm not going to get ahead of where he will end up on this because, as he said yesterday, he wants to be able to engage and consult with Congress when they return. He wants to be able to reevaluate in a methodical, strategic, effective way. And then he will, at a time and place of his choosing, lay out how he intends to proceed with respect to the relationship,&rdquo; Sullivan said.
&ldquo;This is responsible, it's prudent, it's rooted in his fundamental interest in making sure that the relationship the United States has with Saudi Arabia serves the American people effectively. That's what he's intending to work through,&rdquo; said the National Security Advisor.
Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud told Saudi-owed Al Arabiya on Tuesday that his government's justification of the production cuts was &ldquo;purely economic&rdquo;.

In doing so he has not only fulfilled his promise to the community that he had made as a presidential candidate in 2020, but also shattered the record of his predecessor Donald Trump who had appointed more than 80 Indian-Americans and his previous boss Barack Obama, who had appointed over 60 Indian-Americans to key positions during his eight years of presidency.

While the first-ever presidential appointment was done during the time of Ronald Regan, this time Biden has appointed Indian-Americans to almost all departments and agencies of his administration.
"Indian-Americans have been imbued with the sense of seva (service) and this is reflected in their enthusiasm to pursue positions in public service instead of the private sector," Silicon Valley-based entrepreneur, philanthropist and venture capitalist M R Rangaswami told PTI.
"The Biden administration has now appointed or nominated the largest group to date and needless to say we are proud of our people and their accomplishments for the United States," Rangaswami said. Rangaswami is founder and head of Indiaspora, a US-based global organization for Indian-origin leaders. Indiaspora keeps a track of Indian-origin leaders.

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday nominated Indian-American scientist Dr Arti Prabhakar as Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).
If confirmed by the Senate, Dr Prabhakar would make history as the first woman, immigrant, or person of colour to head OSTP.
&ldquo;Dr Prabhakar is a brilliant and highly-respected engineer and applied physicist and will lead the Office of Science and Technology Policy to leverage science, technology, and innovation to expand our possibilities, solve our toughest challenges, and make the impossible possible,&rdquo; said Biden.
&ldquo;I share Dr Prabhakar&rsquo;s belief that America has the most powerful innovation machine the world has ever seen. As the Senate considers her nomination, I am grateful that Dr Alondra Nelson will continue to lead OSTP and Dr. Francis Collins will continue to serve as my acting Science Advisor,&rdquo; he said.
Once confirmed she would also be Assistant to the President for Science and Technology. In this capacity, Dr Prabhakar will be the President&rsquo;s Chief Advisor for Science and Technology, a co-chair of the President&rsquo;s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and a member of the President&rsquo;s Cabinet.

Biden wrote in a recent letter to Boston-based Indian American Abhishek Singh that despite the tough times, he have never been more optimistic for the future of America.
“Our country faces many challenges, and the road we will travel together will be one of the most difficult in our history. Despite these tough times, I have never been more optimistic for the future of America.
“I believe we are better positioned than any country in the world to lead in the 21st century not just by the example of our power but by the power of our example,” Biden wrote in a recent letter to Boston-based Indian American Abhishek Singh.
Singh is president of Federation of Indian Association, New England, which along with FIA in New York and New Jersey last week launched the community celebration of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” at the US Capitol, attended by more than a dozen-and-a-half lawmakers.
In his letter to Singh, Biden pledged to be a President for all Americans. “I am confident that we can work together to find common ground to make America a more just, prosperous, and secure Nation,” he wrote.
The event was attended by hundreds of Indian Americans and at least 21 US lawmakers from across states.

Applicants eligible for the waiver are students (F, M, and academic J visas), workers (H-1, H-2, H-3, and individual L visas), those under Culture and extraordinary ability category visas (O, P, and Q visas).
Ajay Jain Bhutoria, South Asian Community Leader and US President Joe Biden’s Advisor for Asian Americans, said, "This was much-needed support to visa applicants, and would be very helpful to our friends and immediate family members and help alleviate a lot of their concerns and inconveniences."
To be eligible for the expanded interview waiver programme, applicants seeking these visa classifications must have previously been issued any category of US visa; have never been refused a US visa and have no indication of ineligibility or potential visa ineligibility.
They also need to be a resident or national of the country in which they are applying; among other, the State Department said.
The US embassy in New Delhi and its consulates in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai will release more than 20,000 additional waiver (dropbox) appointments for Spring 2022 to allow qualified applicants to make use of the new interview waiver authority.
The move is being seen as an effort to increase people-to people relationships between the US and India. Authorities say, both India and the US share strong democratic values and can provide leadership in the Asia Pacific region.

An immigration reform passed by the US House of Representatives recently, could benefit thousands of Indians who are looking to move and work in the United States. 
The House version of the America COMPETES Act features a host of immigration-related changes for budding entrepreneurs and STEM doctorates, allowing them easier access to a green card.
The Act will amend the Immigration and Nationality Act for providing startup visas. The 'W' category visa will be classified into three categories namely W-1, W-2 and W-3.
W-1 visa will be given to foreign nationals who have ownership interest in startups, a W-2 visa is for staff critical for operation of the startup and W-3 visa for the spouses and children of W-1 and W-2 visa holders.
The Act also removes green card limits for those who hold a doctoral degree in STEM disciplines, from a US university or an equivalent foreign institution. STEM students could claim 'dual intent' status, meaning they could declare their interest in pursuing a career in the US after graduation, rather than first returning to their home country.
The America COMPETES Act essentially aims to take on China to attract innovation and entrepreneurship to build stronger supply chains. Data shows that America loses out to countries like Canada when it comes to a tailored start-up visa. The reform therefore aims to fill the gap and its a win-win for Indians.

The Act also removes green card limits for those who hold a doctoral degree in STEM disciplines, from a US university or an equivalent foreign institution.
