A sexagenarian who allegedly married 14 women in seven states in a span of 48 years was arrested in Bhubaneswar on Monday, police said.
It is also alleged that the man who hails from a village under Patkura police station in Odisha's Kendrapara district took money from these women before fleeing. The arrested man, however, denied the charges.
The accused had married for the first time in 1982 and took a second wife in 2002. He fathered five children from these two marriages, Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Umashankar Dash said. Between 2002 and 2020, he befriended other women through matrimonial websites and married them without knowledge of the other wives, Dash said.
The man was staying in the Odisha capital with his last wife, who was a school teacher in Delhi. She somehow came to know of his earlier marriages and lodged a complaint with the police.He was arrested from his rented accommodation. On the modus operandi of the accused, the DCP said he used to target middle-aged single women, mostly divorcees who sought companionship on matrimonal websites. Later he acquires their money before abandoning them.
He used to identify himself as a doctor and married lawyers, physicians and highly-educated women. A woman working in a para-military force was also among her victims, Dash said.
He has duped women in seven states including Delhi, Punjab, Assam, Jharkhand and Odisha. His first two wives were from Odisha.
The DCP said the matter came to the fore when the school teacher had lodged a complaint with the Mahila police in July last year claiming that the accused married her in New Delhi in 2018 and took her to Bhubaneswar.
She came to know about his multiple marriages and the police arrested him on the basis of her complaint.
Police seized 11 ATM cards, four Aaadhaar cards and other documents from his possession.
He was earlier arrested twice for cheating unemployed youths and loan fraud in Hyderabad and Ernakulam, police said.

To celebrate their wedding, Bhubaneswar-based couple Eureka Apta and Joanna Wang did something extraordinary!
The duo, who tied the knot on the 25th of September, organised a special meal for 500 street dogs in the city in collaboration with a local animal rescue organisation called Animal Welfare Trust Ekamra.
After a simple temple wedding, pilot-turned filmmaker Mr. Apta and Dentist Ms Wang wanted to make it a grand feast for the dogs, an inspiration that came from their visit to an animal shelter. The drive was also conducted in memory of Apta's&nbsp;late mother and Wang's grandfather.
Their story struck a chord with many on social media! The 'wedding-with-a-difference' they hope will inspire others and build awareness on the needs of specially-abled dogs and the curse of illegal breeding.

Bhubaneswar, PTI: A day before the scheduled commencement of the monsoon session of the Odisha Assembly, 12 legislators, including Deputy Speaker Rajanikant Singh, tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday, an official said.
Ministers Samir Dash, Padmini Dian and Jyoti Panigrahi tested positive for Covid-19 for the second time. They had earlier contracted the disease and had completed their quarantine period, he said.
The infections were detected during a special drive to test samples of lawmakers for Covid-19 ahead of the monsoon session of the Assembly.
Two other MLAs including Government Chief Whip Pramila Mallick had tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday.
The coronavirus status of some other legislators whose samples were collected during the day will be known on Tuesday, the official said.
"I have tested positive for Covid-19 and have been admitted to SUM Covid Hospital, Bhubaneswar. I request everyone who had come in contact with me in recent few days to get themselves tested. Jai Jagannath," the deputy speaker said in a Twitter post.
Umakanta Samantray, the MLA of Satyabadi seat in Puri district, also said in a social media post that he has tested positive for Covid-19. He urged people who had come in contact with him in the last couple of days to isolate themselves.
The special sample testing drive was launched as per the order of Speaker S N Patro ahead of the monsoon session.
MLAs, journalists and Assembly and ministerial staffers were tested.
The speaker had said that only those testing negative for the infection will be allowed to enter the Assembly building.
As many as 50 MLAs, including nine ministers, have tested positive for Covid-19 in Odisha so far. Many of them have completed their quarantine period.
