Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday left for India after concluding his two-day visit to Israel during which the two countries elevated their &ldquo;time-tested&rdquo; relationship to a special strategic partnership.&nbsp;
It was PM Modi's second visit to Israel in nine years. During his visit, PM Modi held talks with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog.&nbsp;
After the Modi-Netanyahu talks, the two countries inked several agreements and decided to work in the fields of civil and nuclear energy. The two sides vowed to expand their already close defence partnership; agreed to soon firm up a &ldquo;mutually beneficial&rdquo; free trade deal even as PM Modi strongly backed the Gaza peace initiative, asserting that humanity must never become a victim of conflict.&nbsp;
India and Israel also discussed the implementation of the India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and cooperation under the framework of I2U2 (India-Israel-UAE-USA).&nbsp;
Earlier on Wednesday, in a historic address to the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament, Modi described the Gaza Peace Initiative as a path towards &ldquo;just and durable peace&rdquo; in the region even as he delivered a powerful message of solidarity with Israel, asserting that &ldquo;terrorism anywhere threatens peace everywhere.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Modi was conferred with the &lsquo;Speaker of the Knesset Medal&rsquo; in recognition of his exceptional contribution to strengthening strategic relations between India and Israel, thus becoming the first foreign leader to receive the highest honour of the Israeli Parliament.&nbsp;

India and Israel upgraded their ties to a special strategic partnership after talks between PM Narendra Modi and Benjamin Netanyahu, signing multiple agreements in trade, defence and technology.

India and Israel on Thursday elevated their "time-tested" relationship to a special strategic partnership and agreed to fast-track a long-awaited free trade deal even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi backed the Gaza peace initiative, asserting that humanity must never become a victim of conflict.
In his media statement after holding wide-ranging talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Modi said India's security interests are directly linked to peace and stability in the Middle East and that New Delhi has been pitching for a peaceful solution to the conflict in Gaza.
Following the meeting between the two prime ministers, India and Israel inked a total of 17 agreements and documents that will provide for deeper cooperation in artificial intelligence, trade, investment, education, manufacturing, culture, maritime heritage, agriculture and a plethora of other areas.
The two sides also vowed to expand their already close defence partnership by working towards joint development and joint production of military hardware under the framework of the transfer of technologies.
The US-Iran standoff and other issues in the region figured in the talks and PM Modi mentioned India's firm belief in the value of dialogue and reiterated New Delhi's readiness to offer support, if required, toward achieving a peaceful solution, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
In his media statement, PM Modi elaborated on the upward trajectory of India-Israel ties and said the relationship is built on a strong foundation of deep trust, shared democratic values, and human compassion.
"Our relationship has stood the test of time. Today, we took the historic decision to elevate our time-tested partnership to 'Special Strategic Partnership. This decision reflects the aspirations of the people of both countries," he said.
The relationship was upgraded to a strategic partnership in 2017.
"Our economic cooperation remains an engine of growth, innovation, and shared prosperity. Last year, we signed a bilateral investment agreement to promote mutual investment. We will also soon finalise a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA)," Modi said.
The prime minister also talked about the joint resolve of India and Israel in combating terrorism.
"India and Israel are absolutely clear that terrorism has no place in the world. Terrorism, in any form, in any manifestation, cannot be tolerated," Modi, who landed in Israel on Wednesday on a two-day visit, said.
"We have stood shoulder to shoulder against terrorism and its supporters, and will continue to do so."
The prime minister noted that India's security interests are directly linked to peace and stability in West Asia.
"Therefore, we have supported dialogue and a peaceful solution from the very beginning. This is the call of the Global South and all humanity," he said.
"India's thinking is clear: humanity must never become a victim of conflict. The Gaza Peace Plan has opened a path to peace. India has fully supported these efforts. We will continue dialogue and cooperation with all countries in the future," he said.
The prime minister also made a mention of the resolve by the two sides to forge a partnership in the area of critical and emerging technologies.
"Technology is central to our future partnership. Today, we decided to establish a critical and emerging technologies partnership. This will give new impetus to cooperation in areas such as AI, quantum, and critical minerals," he said.
"I am pleased that an agreement has been reached for the use of UPI (Unified Payment Interface) in Israel. We are also committed to improving people's lives by sharing our experiences in the field of digital health," he said.
Modi also touched upon the defence ties between the two sides.
"We have decades-old and trusted cooperation in the defence sector. The MoU signed last year will add new dimensions to this. Together, we will move forward towards joint development, joint production, and transfer of technology," he said.
The prime minister said both sides will also advance cooperation in areas of civil nuclear energy and space.
Modi, referring to robust engagement between the two countries in the agriculture sector, said it has been decided to give this cooperation a futuristic direction.
"The Centres of Excellence established in India with Israeli cooperation are excellent examples of our friendship. Given their success, we have set a goal of increasing their number to 100," he said.
The existing Centres of Excellence offer new technology for agricultural production.
"Taking a step further in this direction, we are working on creating Villages of Excellence. This will bring Israeli technology to every village in India, significantly increasing the income and productivity of millions of farmers," Modi said.
At a media briefing, Foreign Secretary Misri, responding to a question on New Delhi's position on the Palestine issue, said India backs the US-endorsed Gaza Peace Initiative and referred to PM Modi's remarks on it in his address to Israel's Knesset on Wednesday.
"We firmly believe that it (the Gaza Peace Initiative) holds the promise of a just, durable and lasting peace for all the people of the region, including by addressing the Palestinian question," the foreign secretary said.
"This is something that was made amply clear by the prime minister in his address to the Knesset yesterday where he framed this issue very comprehensively," he said.
Misri, referring to Modi's remarks, said this is not the time to lose hope, and it is the time sustain the hope.
In the meeting, India and Israel also discussed the implementation of the India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and cooperation under the framework of I2U2 (India-Israel-UAE-USA).
"We had a comprehensive discussion on regional and global issues. While promoting regional connectivity, we will move forward with renewed momentum on the India-Middle-East-Europe-Economic-Corridor and the India-Israel-UAE-the US (I2U2) framework," Modi said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday visited Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem and paid tributes to the victims of the Holocaust.
He was accompanied by his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu.
At the start of the visit, the two leaders toured the Hall of Names, during which Netanyahu showed Modi the names of his wife Sara's relatives who perished in the Holocaust.
Following the tour, a memorial ceremony was held, in which Prime Minister Modi laid a wreath and placed a stone to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.

Modi said he also visited the Hall of Names, a solemn space that preserves the memory of those who suffered and perished during the Holocaust.
"The Holocaust stands as one of humanity&rsquo;s darkest chapters. It is an eternal reminder of the need to uphold humanity, dignity and peace," Modi said.
This was the second visit of Prime Minister Modi to Yad Vashem.
Established in 1953 by an act of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament), Yad Vashem is entrusted with Holocaust commemoration, documentation, research and education.
"Honouring the memory of victims of the Holocaust and renewing our shared commitment to uphold peace and human dignity. PM @narendramodi visited Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on X.
"The memorial stands as a solemn reminder of the brutality of the past and our collective resolve to stand against injustice and create a better world," Jaiswal said.

Ahead of his talks with Netanyahu, PM Modi met Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
Both leaders explored avenues to further enhance cooperation in education, start-ups, innovation, technology and connectivity, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on the Modi-Herzog meeting.
PM Modi landed in Israel on Wednesday on a two-day visit with an aim to impart a new momentum to the bilateral ties.
It is Modi's second visit to Israel in nine years. The India-Israel relationship was elevated to the level of strategic partnership during Modi's first visit to that country in July 2017.
India and Israel share a robust strategic partnership with strong cooperation across science and technology, innovation, defence and security, trade and investment, agriculture, water, and people-to-people relations.
There has been an upswing in India-Israel ties in the last few years, including in the areas of defence, scientific research, cybersecurity and innovation.
The defence cooperation has emerged as an important pillar of the partnership between the two sides, with Israel supplying a plethora of military platforms and weapon systems to India.
The trade and investment ties between the two sides are also witnessing steady progress.
During the visit to Israel of Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in November, the term of reference (ToR) for the launch of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between India and Israel was signed.
In September, the two sides had inked a Bilateral Investment Agreement (BIA) to expand economic cooperation.
The people-to-people ties between the two countries are also an important aspect of the overall relations, with over 41,000-strong Indian diaspora playing a key role in the two-way engagement.
In November 2023, India and Israel signed a bilateral framework agreement to facilitate the temporary and legal employment of Indian workers in Israel.
Since then, 20,000 Indians arrived in Israel, both under the Government-to-Government route and through private channels, according to officials.

The Congress on Thursday described Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the Israeli Parliament as an "unabashed defence of his host" premier Benjamin Netanyahu and one that "diminished India's moral standing".
Hitting out at Modi, the opposition party also recalled India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru's July 1947 reply to Albert Einstein's letter to him on the subject of the creation of Israel.
Addressing the Knesset on Wednesday, Modi described the Gaza Peace Initiative as a path towards "just and durable peace" in the region. He also delivered a message of solidarity with Israel, asserting that "terrorism anywhere threatens peace everywhere".
"I also carry with me the deepest condolences of the people of India for every life lost and for every family whose world was shattered in the barbaric terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 (2023)... India stands with Israel, firmly, with full conviction, in this moment, and beyond. No cause can justify the murder of civilians. Nothing can justify terrorism," Modi said.
Congress general secretary, in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, denounced the speech and dwelt at length on Nehru's words.

Ramesh then cited Einstein's letter to Jawaharlal Nehru on June 13, 1947, on the subject of the creation of Israel.
"Here is Nehru's reply to Einstein a month later. On November 5, 1949, the two had met at Einstein's home in Princeton. In November 1952, Einstein was offered the Presidency of Israel which he declined," Ramesh recalled.
"And a short while before he passed away in April 1955, Einstein and Nehru had exchanged letters on the issue of nuclear explosions and weapons," he pointed out.
Ramesh posted that in his reply to Einstein on July 11, 1947, Nehru wrote,
"I confess that while I have a very great deal of sympathy for the Jews, I feel sympathy for the Arabs also in their predicament. In any event, the whole issue has become one of high emotion and deep passion on both sides."
India's first prime minister said, "Unless men are big enough on either side, which is just and generally agreeable to the parties concerned, I see no effective solution for the present.
"I have paid a good deal of attention to this problem of Palestine and have read books and pamphlets on the subject issued on either side; yet I cannot say that I know all about it, or that I am competent to pass a final opinion as to what should be done. I know that the Jews have done a wonderful piece of work in Palestine and have raised the standards of the people there, but one question troubles me. After all these remarkable achievements, why have they failed to gain the goodwill of the Arabs? Why do they want to compel the Arabs to submit against their will to certain demands, Nehru asked.
"The way of approach has been one which does not lead to a settlement, but rather to the continuation of the conflict. I have no doubt that the fault is not confined to one party but that all have erred," he went on to say.
The chief difficulty has been the continuation of British rule in Palestine, Nehru said.
In another post, Ramesh cited the criticism of the PM's address by Eitay Mack, a well-known Israeli lawyer and human rights activist.
"He (Mack) has exposed the sham of the Prime Minister's much heralded (In the godi media) address to the Knesset yesterday that diminished India's moral standing," Ramesh said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered India&rsquo;s first-ever address to Israel&rsquo;s Knesset, affirming strong bilateral ties and zero tolerance for terrorism. He also backed the UN-endorsed Gaza Peace Initiative.

In a historic address to Knesset, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described the Gaza Peace Initiative as a path for "just and durable peace" in the entire region even as he delivered a powerful message of solidarity to Israel, asserting that "terrorism anywhere threatens peace everywhere".
Modi said like Israel, India has a "consistent and uncompromising policy of zero tolerance for terrorism with no double standards" and called for sustained and coordinated global efforts to counter the menace.
The prime minister's address to the Knesset, Israel's house of representatives, came hours after he landed in the country to a rousing welcome with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu along with HIS wife Sara receiving him at the Ben Gurion airport.
"I also carry with me the deepest condolences of the people of India for every life lost and for every family whose world was shattered in the barbaric terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 (2023)," Modi said.
"We feel your pain. We share your grief. India stands with Israel, firmly, with full conviction, in this moment, and beyond. No cause can justify the murder of civilians. Nothing can justify terrorism," he said.
Marking the first-ever speech by an Indian prime minister to the Knesset, Modi showed India's strong resolve to combat terrorism with full force.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and several other senior leaders were among the parliamentarians who attended the event.
"India has also endured the pain of terrorism for a long time. We remember the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and the innocent lives lost, including Israeli citizens. Like you, we have a consistent and uncompromising policy of zero tolerance for terrorism, with no double standards," he said.
"Terrorism aims to destabilise societies, to block development, and to erode trust. Countering terrorism requires sustained and coordinated global action, because terror anywhere threatens peace everywhere."
"That is why India supports all efforts that contribute to durable peace and regional stability," he noted.
The prime also delved into the evolving situation in the Middle East and referred to Israel signing the Abraham Accords with a number of countries a few years back.
"It was a moment of new hope for a long-troubled region. Since then, the situation has changed significantly. The path is even more challenging. Yet it is important to sustain that hope," he said.
In the current context, Modi explicitly backed the Gaza Peace Initiative, describing the UN Security Council-endorsed plan as the definitive path toward a "just and durable peace" for the entire region.
"The Gaza Peace Initiative that was endorsed by the UN Security Council offers a pathway. India has expressed its firm support for the initiative," Modi said.
"We believe that it holds the promise of a just and durable peace for all the people of the region, including by addressing the Palestine issue," he said.
"Let all our efforts be guided by wisdom, courage, and humanity. The road to peace is not always easy. But India joins you and the world for dialogue, peace and stability in this region," he added.
The prime minister said that there is great admiration in India for Israel&rsquo;s "resolve, courage, and achievements".
"Long before we related to each other as modern states, we were linked by ties that go back more than two thousand years," he said.
Modi said India and Israel are "democracies shaped by history and focused on the future".
"Our partnership is grounded in shared experience and shared aspirations. Our strong partnership not only serves national interests but also contributes to global stability and prosperity," he said.
Highlighting robust ties between the two countries, Modi said, "In today's uncertain world, a strong defence partnership between trusted partners like India and Israel is of vital importance."
The prime minister also highlighted India's economic growth as well as Israel's technological prowess.
"For the last few years, India has been the fastest-growing major economy in the world. Soon, we will be among the top three economies globally," he said.
"At the same time, Israel is a powerhouse of innovation and technological leadership. This creates a natural foundation for a forward-looking partnership."
"We are committed to expanding trade, strengthening investment flows, and promoting joint infrastructure development," he added.
Modi said the bilateral investment treaty signed by the two sides last year will provide confidence and predictability to businesses.
"In the last few years, India has concluded a number of important trade agreements with other nations. To your West, the European Union, and the UK. To your East, the UAE and Oman," he said.
The prime minister said India-Israel bilateral goods trade has grown manifold in recent years.
At the same time, he noted that it does not reflect the "full scope of opportunity".
"That is why our teams are working hard to negotiate an ambitious Free Trade Agreement. It will unlock the vast untapped potential in our trade relationship," he said.
"Israel is often called the 'start-up nation'. In recent years, we have also been working to unlock the innovation and creativity of our youth," Modi said.
"I recall that in 2018, Prime Minister Netanyahu and I inaugurated the iCreate Technology Business Incubator in India. Since then, it has supported nearly 900 such start-ups," he said.

The prime minister's visit assumed greater significance as it is taking place amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, including deteriorating ties between the US and Iran.
There has been an upswing in India-Israel ties in the last few years, including in the areas of defence, scientific research, cybersecurity and innovation.
The defence cooperation has emerged as an important pillar of the partnership between the two sides, with Israel supplying a plethora of military platforms and weapon systems to India.
In November last, during the visit of India's defence secretary to Israel, an important agreement on defence cooperation was signed.
As India is looking at developing an indigenous air defence shield called "Sudarshan Chakra", it is learnt that New Delhi would like to explore the possibility of incorporating certain elements from Israel's Iron Dome all-weather air defence system that can intercept and destroy missiles and artillery shells.
The trade and investment ties between the two sides are also witnessing steady progress.
During the visit to Israel of Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in November, the term of reference (ToR) for the launch of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between India and Israel was signed.
In September, the two sides had inked a Bilateral Investment Agreement (BIA) to expand economic cooperation.
The people-to-people ties between the two countries are also an important aspect of the overall relations, with over 41,000-strong Indian diaspora playing a key role in the two-way engagement.

Seeking to push for the Islamic republic's ballistic missile program to be included in any deal, Netanyahu had rushed to Washington for his seventh meeting with Trump since the US leader returned to power.
Netanyahu's office said that during the talks with Trump the Israeli premier had "insisted on the security needs of the state of Israel in relation to the negotiations" on Iran.

But Netanyahu, making his sixth visit to the United States since Trump took office, will also be urging the US leader to take a harder line on arch-foe Iran's ballistic missile program.
Tehran, which resumed talks with Washington last week in Oman, warned Monday of "destructive influences" on diplomacy ahead of the Israeli premier's visit.
Netanyahu had been expected to come to Washington for a February 19 meeting of Trump's "Board of Peace" for Gaza, but reportedly brought forward his visit as the US-Iran talks proceeded.

Already in town Tuesday night, Netanyahu met with Trump's Middle East envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

In the wake of the incident, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formed a &ldquo;dedicated and comprehensive&rdquo; investigation team to probe the blast, which officials believe was carried out by a Jaish-e-Mohammad module uncovered earlier by Indian agencies.
The NIA team, comprising senior officers of the rank of Superintendent of Police and above, will ensure a coordinated and in-depth probe under the supervision of top leadership.
The decision followed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) formally handing over the case to the NIA, citing a clear terror angle behind the explosion.
Following the transfer, the agency registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to trace those responsible and identify any broader network involved.
Sources said the NIA is working closely with central and state security agencies and examining multiple angles &mdash; including whether the explosion was deliberate or accidental &mdash; as part of its ongoing inquiry.

Days after his defiant speech at the United Nations rejecting demands to end the war in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to confer with his most important supporter.
But Monday's meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington comes at a tenuous moment. Israel is increasingly isolated, losing support from many countries that were long its steadfast allies. At home, Netanyahu's governing coalition appears more fragile than ever. And the White House is showing signs of impatience.
The question now is whether Trump, who has offered steadfast backing to Netanyahu throughout the war, will change his tone and turn up the pressure on Israel to finally wind down the conflict.
In a post Sunday on social media, the president said: &ldquo;We have a real chance for GREATNESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST. ALL ARE ON BOARD FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL, FIRST TIME EVER. WE WILL GET IT DONE!!!&rdquo; Trump and Netanyahu are scheduled to meet in the Oval Office, and a joint press conference is expected later.
The uncertainty surrounding the meeting casts it as &ldquo;one of the most critical&rdquo; in the yearslong relationship between the two leaders, said professor Eytan Gilboa, an expert on US-Israeli relations at Bar-Ilan and Reichman universities.
"Netanyahu might have to choose between Trump and his coalition members,&rdquo; a number of whom want the war to continue, Gilboa said. A move by Netanyahu to end the war would leave him on shaky political ground at home a year before elections.
'Israel could seek to include red lines' If Trump puts the pressure on, the Israeli leader would probably seek to include &ldquo;red lines&rdquo; in any deal, Ailam said. He might demand that Hamas be dismantled, Ailam said. Netanyahu might also set a condition that if the militant group resumes fighting or returns to power, the Israeli military would have the right to operate freely in Gaza, he said.
Trump joined forces with Netanyahu during Israel's brief war with Iran in June, ordering US stealth bombers to strike three nuclear sites, and he's supported the Israeli leader during his corruption trial, describing the case as a &ldquo;witch hunt.&rdquo; But the relationship has become more tense lately. Trump was frustrated by Israel's failed strike this month on Hamas officials in Qatar, a US ally in the region that had been hosting negotiations to end the war in Gaza.
Recent comments have hinted at growing impatience from Washington. Last week, Trump vowed to prevent Israel from annexing the West Bank &mdash; an idea promoted by some of Netanyahu's hard-line governing partners. The international community opposes annexation, saying it would destroy hopes for a two-state solution.
Michael Doran, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, dismissed the idea that Trump's comments about the West Bank were a sign of friction. He said the remarks allowed Netanyahu to resist pressure from right-wing members of his government.
&ldquo;That was a clever move by Trump,&rdquo; Doran said. &ldquo;It simultaneously showed responsiveness to Arab and Muslim allies while actually helping out Netanyahu.&rdquo; On Friday, Trump raised expectations for the meeting with Netanyahu, telling reporters on the White House lawn that the U.S. was &ldquo;very close to a deal on Gaza.&rdquo; Trump has made similar pronouncements in the past with nothing to show for it, and it's unclear if this time will be different.
Proposal does not include expulsion of Palestinians Trump's proposal to stop the war in Gaza calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages within 48 hours and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian enclave, according to three Arab officials briefed on the plan. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan has not been formally unveiled.
Hamas is believed to be holding 48 hostages, 20 of whom are believed by Israel to still be alive. The militant group has demanded that Israel agree to end the war altogether and withdraw from all of Gaza as part of any permanent ceasefire.
Trump discussed the plan with Arab and Islamic leaders in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It doesn't include the expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza, which Trump appeared to endorse earlier this year.
The 21-point proposal also calls for an end to Hamas rule of Gaza as well as the disarmament of the militant group, the officials who were briefed on the plan, said. Hundreds of Palestinians, including many serving life sentences, will be released by Israel, according to the proposal.
The plan also includes the establishment of an international security force to take over law enforcement in post-war Gaza, they said.
A Palestinian committee of technocrats would oversee the civilian affairs of the strip, with power handed over later to a reformed Palestinian Authority, they said. Netanyahu has rejected any role for the authority, the internationally recognised representative of the Palestinians, in postwar Gaza.
A Hamas official said the group was briefed on the plan but has yet to receive an official offer from Egyptian and Qatari mediators. The group has repeatedly rejected laying down arms and has linked its weapons to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Netanyahu acknowledged the US plan Sunday in an interview with Fox News, saying Israeli officials were &ldquo;working with President Trump's team ... and I hope we can make it a go.&rdquo; In his speech Friday at the UN, Netanyahu praised Trump multiple times, calling him an essential partner who &ldquo;understands better than any other leader that Israel and America face a common threat.&rdquo; Israel has lost much of the world's goodwill But apart from the US leadership, Israel has lost much of the international goodwill it once could count on.
At a special session of the UN Security Council last week, nation after nation expressed horror at the 2023 attack by Hamas militants that killed about 1,200 people in Israel, saw 251 taken hostage and triggered the war. Then many of the representatives went on to criticise the response by Israel and call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and influx of aid.
Israel's sweeping offensive has killed more than 66,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run administration. Its figures are seen as a reliable estimate by the UN and many independent experts. The fighting has displaced 90 per cent of the Gaza population, with an increasing number now starving.
In recent weeks, 28 Western-aligned countries that circled behind Israel two years ago have called on it to end the offensive in Gaza. They also criticised Israel's restrictions on humanitarian aid, which have contributed to famine in parts of Gaza.
Ten countries &mdash; including Britain, France, Canada and Australia &mdash; recognised Palestinian statehood last week, hoping to revive the long-moribund peace process.
Several Arab states, including some with longstanding relations with Israel, have accused it of committing genocide in Gaza, as have leading genocide scholars, UN experts and some Israeli and international rights groups. The UN's highest court is weighing genocide allegations raised by South Africa that Israel vehemently denies.&nbsp;

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Thursday that there would be no Palestinian state, speaking at a signing ceremony for a major settlement project in the occupied West Bank.
"We are going to fulfil our promise that there will be no Palestinian state, this place belongs to us," Netanyahu said at the event in Maale Adumim, an Israeli settlement just east of Jerusalem.
"We will safeguard our heritage, our land and our security... We are going to double the city's population." The event was streamed live by his office.
Israel has long had ambitions to build on the roughly 12 square kilometre (five square mile) tract of land known as E1, but the plan had been stalled for years in the face of international opposition.
The site sits between Jerusalem and the Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim, near routes connecting the north and south of the Palestinian territory.
Last month, Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich backed plans to build around 3,400 homes on the ultra-sensitive parcel of land.
His announcement drew condemnation, with UN chief Antonio Guterres saying the settlement would effectively cleave the West Bank in two and pose an "existential threat" to a contiguous Palestinian state.
All of Israel's settlements in the West Bank, occupied since 1967, are considered illegal under international law, regardless of whether they have Israeli planning permission.
Several Western governments, including Britain and France, have announced they intend to recognise the State of Palestine at the United Nations later this month.
Britain has said it will take the step if Israel fails to agree to a ceasefire in the devastating Gaza war, triggered by Palestinian militant group Hamas's October 2023 attack.
Far-right Israeli ministers have in recent months openly called for Israel's annexation of the territory.
Israeli NGO Peace Now, which monitors settlement activity in the West Bank, said last week that infrastructure work in E1 could begin within a few months, and housing construction within about a year.
It said the E1 plan was "deadly for the future of Israel and for any chance of achieving a peaceful two-state solution".
Excluding Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, the West Bank is home to around three million Palestinians, as well as about 500,000 Israeli settlers.
