Five days after being cleared of rape and sexual assault charges, former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has officially signed a two-year contract with the French club Lorient.
The 29-year-old left Manchester City in the previous month as his contract expired and had not played for the Premier League and Champions League-winning team since 2021.
Mendy faced serious charges of rape and attempted rape, which he was acquitted of by the Chester Crown Court in England last Friday. After the legal ordeal, Mendy is now free to resume his professional football career.
Before his time at Manchester City, Mendy progressed through Le Havre's academy and established himself during a successful three-year stint with Marseille. In 2017, he made a move to City for a reported fee of UK&pound;52 million (US$67.2 million) after impressing during his solitary season with Monaco. During his tenure with Manchester City, Mendy was part of three Premier League title-winning campaigns under the management of Pep Guardiola.
Lorient, who finished 10th in Ligue 1 last season under Regis Le Bris, has welcomed Mendy to the team. The player is set to commence his journey with the club starting Wednesday. The French international left-back, Benjamin Mendy, will wear the number five jersey for Lorient.

Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been found not guilty of raping a young woman and the attempted rape of another.
The 28-year-old broke down in tears on Friday, as the not-guilty verdicts were given by the jury foreman following a three-week trial at Chester Crown Court.
He had stood for the verdicts but sank to his seat, his head on his knees, wiping away tears with a white tissue.
Mendy, whose contract with the English Premier League champions ended on 1st July, was cleared of attempting to rape a woman, aged 29 at the time, at his mansion in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire in October 2018.
He was also found not guilty of the rape of a second woman, aged 24, two years later - also at his home address.
The French international footballer is alleged to have later told her "It's fine, I've had sex with 10,000 women", the court heard.
The jury of six men and six women were out for around three hours and 15 minutes before returning their verdicts.
Judge Steven Everett responded: "Mr Mendy can be discharged from the dock."
His trial was a re-trial, having been cleared by a jury earlier this year of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, relating to four young women or teenagers, following a six-month trial.
Jurors failed to reach verdicts on the two counts of rape and attempted rape he was re-tried with.

Judge Stephen Everett ordered the jury to give the verdict on Tuesday after the prosecution provided no further evidence against the defendants.
He also warned the jurors not to specilate why the prosecution has decided to not pursue guilty verdicts all of a sudden and to continure to 'faithfully' try the defendants on the multiple charges they still face.
The prosecutors have alleged that the Mendy was 'predator' who 'turned the pursuit of women for sex into a game' and that his friend Matturie had the job of finding young women for sex.
The French World Cup winner still faces seven counts of rape, one count of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault against six young women.
