Covid-19 cases are on the rise in Kolkata since the Durga Puja festivities ended on October 15.
The graph is rising so sharply that city&rsquo;s civic body has decided to reopen safe houses and quarantine on Monday for patients who need to isolate.
After all the &nbsp;puja shopping and pandal hopping, the Bengal capital reported 242 new Covid infections on Friday. Of these, 150 were fully vaccinated while 15 had the first dose. The officials are attributing the spike to lack of safety protocols followed by people during Durga puja festivities last week.
Not just Kolkata, numbers are rising across Bengal. Meanwhile, authorities are waiting for the full picture of the spike to emerge next week. Up from 451 to 833 in seven days, the numbers of daily infection in the state are alarming.
What is even more worrying is the fact that most of the new infections are asymptomatic which would mean such people could be going around spreading the virus.

Chief Minister&nbsp;Mamata Banerjee&nbsp;on Sunday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi&nbsp;seeking the Centre&rsquo;s permission to &ldquo;purchase vaccination doses directly with state funds and launch free vaccination campaign covering the entire West Bengal population&rdquo;.
This is the second such letter that Mamata&nbsp;has darted to the PM since February this year.&nbsp;Urging the Centre to increase the supply of Remedesvir and Tocilizumab, she said the supply&nbsp;of two drugs is extremely scarce and uncertain, which has been a matter of grave concern. She said Bengal needs around 6,000 vials of Remdesvir and 1,000 vials of Tocilizumab daily, but at present only 1000 vials of Remdesvir is available daily and no fresh supply of Tocilizumab is coming.&nbsp;

The BJP on Friday told the Election Commission that there was no sign so far that a "rise in Covid cases could be attributed to the democratic process" and opposed Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee&rsquo;s demand to pack remaining four phases of the election be packed into one day of voting. The BJP has written a letter to the ECI saying that in order to ensure level-playing field to all candidates, the poll panel must hold the remaining phases as per schedule. The letter adds the right, already exercised by more than 60 per cent of the candidates, should also be provided to the reaming candidates to ensure equality.
