Houses built on government land by 11 persons were demolished in Madhya Pradesh's Mandla after the police received a tip off that a large number of cows had been held captive for slaughter.
A senior police official said that 150 cows were found tied in the backyards of the accused. He added that cow meat was also recovered from the refrigerators in the homes of all the11 accused.
The official further said that they also found animal fat, cattle skin and bones, which were stuffed in a room. He said the local government veterinarian confirmed the seized meat was beef.
One person has been arrested in connection with the case while the hunt is on for the remaining.
Notably, cow slaughter is illegal in most Indian states. This has also been backed by the Supreme Court.
Nevertheless, India is still the second largest beef exporter in the world. But the beef exports refer to buffalo meat alone as export of cow meat is prohibited.

The high court said that the act only bans the transportation of cow, bull or bullock.&nbsp;

The Allahabad High Court has observed that the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act does not prohibit the transportation of beef.
The above observation was made by Justice Pankaj Bhatia while allowing a criminal revision filed by one Vaseem Ahmad, who had moved the court challenging an order of the Fatehpur district magistrate, confiscating his motorcycle on the allegation that it was used for transportation of beef.
In the order, the district magistrate had said he had received a report from the Fatehpur Superintendent of Police that the revisionist's vehicle was implicated in transporting beef and further recorded that since the revisionist failed to provide convincing evidence contradicting the claim, the vehicle was liable to be confiscated under the anti-cow slaughter law.
"The restrictions on transportation in terms of the Act and the rules framed thereunder are only applicable in respect of transportation of cow, bull or bullock, that too in any place in Uttar Pradesh from any place outside the state," the court said on Monday after hearing the lawyers from both sides.
"In the entire Act or the rules, there exists no provision barring transportation of beef. The restriction placed under section 5A of the Cow Slaughter Act is only in respect of transportation of cow, bull or bullock, that too only from a place outside the state to any place within the state. There is no bar or restriction on transportation of beef even from any place outside the state to any place inside the state," it observed.

"In the present case, the alleged transportation of beef on a vehicle (motorcycle) within two places in the state is neither prohibited nor even regulated and thus, the foundation for confiscation on the charge of transportation in violation of the provisions of this Act is prima facie not established," the court said.
"I have no hesitation in holding that the power of confiscation has been exercised without any authority of law and on a misreading of section 5A(7) of the Cow Slaughter Act, and for the said reasons, the confiscation order cannot be sustained and is liable to be quashed," it added.&nbsp;

Researchers observed the association between vegetarianism and depression among adults during the study. They examined the dietary patterns of 14,216 adults aged 35 to 74 along with other variables like smoking, alcohol consumption, levels of physical activity, body mass index and nutrition.&nbsp;
The team found that vegetarian or plant-based diets actually led to people experiencing depressive episodes twice as often as those who eat beef.
Nutrients found in meat including iron, vitamin B, zinc and protein help brain functions and may be valuable in preventing depressive episodes. However, further research is required to clarify the relationship.&nbsp;

A caretaker in a Delhi farmhouse was lynched and three people were injured after a group of 10-15 men, claiming to be 'gau rakshaks', attacked them on suspicion that they were slaughtering cows, police said on Tuesday.
Rajaram (40), who worked as a caretaker at the farmhouse in Dwarka’s Chhawla area, was killed in the incident on Monday, they said.
Information was received that a group of men were slaughtering cows and selling the meat in the area, police said.
A team was rushed to the spot, but before it could reach there, 10-15 unidentified men, claiming to be 'gau rakshaks' (cow protectors), reached the farmhouse and attacked those inside it, a senior police officer said.
Two FIRs have been registered in the case, he said.
In the first FIR, one of the injured, who is a fruitseller by profession, said that he and his friends were often called by Rajaram to slaughter cows which he used to bring from his native place.
He said that after slaughtering the cows, they used to cut it into pieces and then package the meat for sale.
On Monday, when the caretaker along with some others was working inside the farmhouse, some unidentified men barged in and started thrashing them, police said quoting the FIR.
Rajaram and the others were taken to a hospital, but he succumbed to injuries, the officer said. "Our teams have collected a few samples from the spot and sent it for examination. Two separate cases have also been registered in the matter and five men were arrested from the spot," the officer said.
The other FIR, police said, has been registered under sections pertaining to cow slaughter.

The Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal party tweeted a video of a man purportedly being harassed and accused of beef consumption. The man has reportedly been identified as Mohammad Khaleel Alam, a member of the ruling Janata Dal (United) party from Samastipur.
Alam was allegedly beaten to death, and then buried in a ditch, as per news reports. The alleged killers also poured petrol on the body and tried to burn it, according to some accounts. They reportedly sprayed salt on the corpse to make it decay faster.

Bihar police denied a communal angle in the crime, and said that it was a tactic to divert attention from a murder, as per reports.

RJD MLA and Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav said that the law and order system has collapsed under the NDA government. He asked Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to explain why such incidents are taking place in the state.
The RJD accused CM Nitish of assuming a "criminal silence" on the issue. The Opposition party said that Nitish is unable to handle the state, and the administration of Bihar has been auctioned to criminals and mafia.
