UK Foreign Minister James Cleverly, who is in Delhi for the G20 summit, took up the BBC tax 'survey' episode with the Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar during a bilateral meet in the national capital on Wednesday, a Reuters report said.&nbsp;
However, the minister was told strongly that all entities must comply with laws, according to a NDTV report.&nbsp;
Searches were conducted by the CBDT at the British Broadcaster's Delhi and Mumbai offices last month. As the UK govt jumped in to defend BBC, the raids triggered protests and made headlines across the globe.&nbsp;
The searches were conducted at a time when the Indian govt had reacted strongly by banning BBC's 2-part documentary on PM Narendra Modi.&nbsp;

Reports said some news staff members were questioned overnight but the tax officials on Thursday restricted themselves to the company's business executives and their offices.

India&rsquo;s tax officials were searching the BBC offices in New Delhi and Mumbai for a third straight day on Thursday seeking information about the organization&rsquo;s business operations amid allegations of tax evasion, as criticism increased from opposition political parties and other media organizations.
Some news staff members were questioned overnight but the tax officials on Thursday restricted themselves to the company's business executives and their offices, said some staff members who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak to media.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's critics questioned the timing of the searches, which came weeks after the BBC aired a documentary critical of Modi in the U.K.
The Indian tax department hasn&rsquo;t so far issued any statement on what prompted the searches of the BBC offices since officials arrived there Tuesday morning.
Britain&rsquo;s publicly funded national broadcaster said on Tuesday it was cooperating fully with Indian authorities and hoped &ldquo;to have this situation resolved as soon as possible.&rdquo;
The Press Trust of India news agency cited unnamed officials as saying on Thursday that investigators collected financial data from select BBC staffers and made copies of electronic and paper data from the news organization.
The survey is being carried out to investigate issues related to international taxation and transfer pricing of BBC subsidiary companies, the agency said.
India&rsquo;s News Broadcasters and Digital Association criticized the income tax &ldquo;surveys&rdquo; at the BBC offices.
While the association &ldquo;maintains that no institution is above the law, it condemns any attempt to muzzle and intimidate the media and interfere with the free functioning of journalists and media organizations," it said in a statement on Wednesday.
The main opposition Congress party leader, Mallikarjun Kharge described the government action as an assault on freedom of the press under Modi&rsquo;s government.
The documentary, &ldquo;India: The Modi Question,&rdquo; was broadcast in the U.K. last month, examining the prime minister&rsquo;s role in the 2002 anti-Muslim riots in the western state of Gujarat, where he was chief minister at the time. More than 1,000 people were killed in the violence.
Modi has denied allegations that authorities under his watch allowed and even encouraged the bloodshed, and the Supreme Court said it found no evidence to prosecute him.
Last year, the court dismissed a petition filed by a Muslim victim questioning Modi&rsquo;s exoneration.
The second portion of the two-part documentary examined &ldquo;the track record of Narendra Modi&rsquo;s government following his re-election in 2019,&rdquo; according to the BBC website.
The program drew an immediate backlash from India&rsquo;s government, which invoked emergency powers under its information technology laws to block it from being shown in the country.

Local authorities scrambled to stop screenings organized at Indian universities, and social media platforms including Twitter and YouTube complied with government requests to remove links to the documentary.

The BBC said at the time that the documentary was &ldquo;rigorously researched&rdquo; and involved a wide range of voices and opinions.

India&rsquo;s Foreign Ministry called the documentary a &ldquo;propaganda piece designed to push a particularly discredited narrative&rdquo; that lacked objectivity.

According to I-T rules, transfer pricing "generally refers to prices of transactions between associated enterprises which may take place under conditions differing from those taking place between independent enterprises. It refers to the value attached to transfers of goods, services and technology between related entities''.
It also refers to the value attached to transfers between unrelated parties which are controlled by a common entity.

The UK is "closely monitoring" the situation following the Income Tax surveys at the BBC offices in India, British government sources here said today.
The Income Tax department conducted survey operations at the BBC's offices in Delhi and Mumbai on Tuesday with the officials describing the action as part of an investigation into alleged tax evasion.
Reacting to the Indian IT department's action, the UK-based British public broadcaster said that it was "fully cooperating" with the authorities and hoped that the situation will be resolved "as soon as possible".
While there has been no official statement from the UK government related to the action, British sources said they are "closely monitoring" reports of tax surveys conducted at the offices of the BBC in India.
In New Delhi, officials said the survey was being carried out to investigate issues related to international taxation and transfer pricing of BBC subsidiary companies, and alleged that the BBC had been served with notices in the past but was "defiant and non-compliant" and had significantly diverted its profits.
The IT action against the BBC comes weeks after the broadcaster aired a controversial two-part documentary -"India: The Modi Question"- on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 2002 Gujarat riots.
"The Income Tax Authorities are currently at the BBC offices in New Delhi and Mumbai and we are fully cooperating," a BBC spokesperson said in a statement.
"We hope to have this situation resolved as soon as possible," the spokesperson said.
The BBC did not give further details of what has been described as "surveys" by the Income Tax (IT) department, which reportedly involved local BBC staff being prevented from leaving or entering the office premises and their mobile phones and other gadgets being seized.

The Editors Guild of India on Tuesday said it was "deeply concerned" about the Income Tax surveys at the offices of BBC India and termed it as a continuation of a "trend" of using government agencies to "intimidate and harass" media outlets critical of the ruling establishment.
In a statement, the Guild also demanded that great care and sensitivity be shown in all such investigations so as to not undermine the rights of journalists and media organisations.
The statement came after Income Tax authorities conducted a survey operation at the BBC's offices in Delhi and Mumbai as part of an investigation into alleged tax evasion.
The action, it is learnt, is being carried out to investigate some international taxation and transfer pricing issues.
The broadcaster said it was "fully cooperating" with the tax authorities.
"The survey by the I-T department is in continuation of a trend of using government agencies to intimidate and harass press organisations that are critical of government policies or the ruling establishment," the Guild said in a statement here.
The Guild noted that the IT survey came soon after the release of two documentaries by the BBC on the 2002 violence in Gujarat and the current status of the minorities in India.
The documentaries stirred political waters, with the government criticising the BBC for wrong and prejudiced reportage on the Gujarat violence and attempting to ban online access and viewing of the films in India, it said.
It recalled that IT surveys were conducted in 2021 at the offices of NewsClick, Newslaundry, Dainik Bhaskar and Bharat Samachar.
"In each case, the raids and surveys were against the backdrop of critical coverage of the government establishment by the news organisations," the Guild said.
"This is a trend that undermines constitutional democracy," it said.
The Guild reiterated its earlier demand that governments ensure that such investigations are conducted within the prescribed rules and that they don&rsquo;t degenerate into instruments of harassment to intimidate independent media.&nbsp;
