Over three decades spent chronicling the everyday lives of women in India, International Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq says she cannot live without writing as it is like breathing for her.
Mushtaq's short story collection "Heart Lamp", translated by Deepa Bhasthi from Kannada to English, became the first Kannada title to receive the prestigious literary award on May 21.
The writer, who returned to India on Tuesday, reflected on her career as a lawyer, women&rsquo;s rights activist, a reporter, and a writer in an interview with PTI.
"I had to make a lot of effort. I had to write and I had to work hard, I have done all of that. There are many challenges in it. Writing is not that easy, there are many difficulties and challenges in it, I had to face that too.
&ldquo;I never thought that I would not write. Every day I believe that I have to write. I cannot live without writing, writing is like breathing for me, that is why I had to write and move forward," Mushtaq said.
The winning collection of 12 short stories chronicles the resilience, resistance, wit, and sisterhood of everyday women struggling in patriarchal setup in southern India.
Mushtaq and Bhasthi competed against five other international titles for the coveted GBP 50,000 prize.
It was a moment of disbelief for Mushtaq, who called her win "a miraculous thing".
"The jury chairman delivered his speech. My children and I were watching what he was going to say, when finally the 'Heart Lamp' was announced, our happiness knew no bounds, I became numb for two minutes. I could not understand what I was hearing," the 77-year-old said.
And then everything drowned in applause.
"My children also started cheering... Never in my wildest dreams I thought I would enter this competition and reach this place. This is a miraculous thing, " she said.
In her long career, Mushtaq has worked as a reporter for Kannada newspaper Lankesh Patrike from 1990 to 2000 and currently works as a lawyer at Hassan court in Karnataka.
In a message to her readers, she said that the real aim of life should be to strive for a peaceful coexistence.
"There can only be one message that in our country we should maintain a brotherhood. The real aim of our lives should be to strive for a peaceful coexistence. We should abstain from hate speech, and be cautious of hate speech. If what you say is true then I have no objection to it but when intentionally lies are concocted then it does not feel good," she said.

Author and activist Banu Mushtaq, who made history when her short story collection &lsquo;Heart Lamp&rsquo; became the first Kannada literary work to win the International Booker Prize this week, has described her victory as a &ldquo;historical occasion&rdquo; for literature in the classical Dravidian language.
In an interview with PTI hours after lifting the trophy at a glittering awards ceremony in London on Tuesday night, Mushtaq and translator Deepa Bhasthi expressed their sheer joy at the global recognition for Kannada literature, which goes back hundreds of years.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a historic occasion for Kannada literature because till now there was no such huge global recognition for our literature,&rdquo; said Mushtaq.
&ldquo;Though Kannada has got a lot of potentiality, a lot of literature is out there, but it has not been exposed to the global arena and not been recognised,&rdquo; she said.
Bhasthi expressed the hope that the big win for &lsquo;Heart Lamp&rsquo; would lead to many more translations, making the rich literature available to a much wider global audience.
&ldquo;I'm very excited to see a lot more translations from Kannada because we have incredible literature that goes back to at least 1,500 years. I hope there are far more works from Kannada which are translated into English,&rdquo; she said.
The tales in &lsquo;Heart Lamp&rsquo;, the first collection of short stories to win the prestigious GBP 50,000 literary prize shared between author and translator, were written by Mushtaq over a period of over 30 years between 1990 and 2023. They were selected and curated by Bhasthi, who was keen to preserve the multilingual nature of southern India.
Asked about the timeless quality of these tales that resonated with the Booker judges, Mushtaq pointed to the great classics that impact people&rsquo;s imaginations over hundreds of years.
&ldquo;The great literature we are reading even today is about 200-300 years old, or even 500 years. It stands the test of the time and is relevant even today. Thirty years is nothing,&rdquo; she said.
Bhasthi noted: &ldquo;I say this very often, and I think about this very often, that even though the stories were written over 30 years, the underlying theme in pretty much every single one of the stories is the way women live and love and laugh and dissent and manage the pressures of patriarchy.
&ldquo;So in that sense, not much has changed. I mean, patriarchy has been trying to tame women back then, and it is still trying to tame women to this day. It is this underlying theme in the stories that gives a certain timelessness to the stories in &lsquo;Heart Lamp&rsquo;.&rdquo; In her acceptance speech, Mushtaq described literature as a sacred space where &ldquo;we can live inside each other's minds, if only for a few pages&rdquo;.
Asked to elaborate on how she would like her writings to live in readers&rsquo; minds, she added: &ldquo;In certain passages I have created, when you are fully engrossed, is when I have entered your mind and heart. You have given your mind and heart to my work.
&ldquo;Thereby, we exchange our views, we hold a sacred dialogue with each other.&rdquo; The International Booker Prize is an annual literary award that celebrates the best works of long-form fiction or collections of short stories translated into English and published in the UK and/or Ireland between May 2024 and April 2025.
Shortlisted among six worldwide titles, Mushtaq&rsquo;s work appealed to the 2025 judges' panel for its &ldquo;witty, vivid, colloquial, moving and excoriating&rdquo; style of capturing portraits of family and community tensions.

Infosys Foundation founder-chairperson Sudha Murthy on Wednesday said that Banu Mushtaq's Booker Prize 2025 -- the first for a book originally written in Kannada -- is a double win for every Kannadiga woman.
Writer, activist, and lawyer Mushtaq's short story collection &lsquo;Hridaya Deepa&rsquo; (Heart Lamp) on Tuesday night became the first Kannada title to win the coveted GBP 50,000 International Booker Prize in London.
"I feel extremely happy. As an Indian, I am happy. As a Kannada person, I am very happy. As an author, I am very happy. And as a woman, I am even happier. She is a great writer, and this is a great beginning. Let many people like her get the Booker Prize in different languages," Murthy told PTI Videos.
'Heart Lamp', translated by Deepa Bhasthi, was described as "a radical translation" that reshaped language and offered "new textures in a plurality of Englishes" by the jury of the Booker Prize.
Hailing from the Hassan district of Karnataka, Mushtaq often said in interviews that she wrote to challenge chauvinistic religious interpretations of societal rules.
Meanwhile, Karnataka's heartthrob, actor Namma Shivanna, aka Shiva Rajkumar, took to 'X' to convey his "heartfelt congratulations".
"Your achievement of introducing Kannada literature on a global scale and attracting the attention of the world is a great contribution to Kannada literature and cultural heritage. I hope that this honor will further strengthen the world of Kannada literature," said Shivanna.
Activist and actor Chetan Kumar Ahimsa, one of the key figures in pushing for equality and safety of women involved in the Kannada Film Industry, also posted his message for the author on 'X', noting that this recognition is a source of pride for Kannada and Karnataka.
During her acceptance speech, Bhasthi paid tribute to the Kannada language by quoting an iconic line from a Kannada song, made immortal by Kannada film legend Dr Rajkumar. "Jenin holeyo, halin maleyo, sudheyo, Kannada savi nudio", she said drawing a parallel between Kannada and a river of honey, a rain of milk, and sweet ambrosia.
"What a win this is for my beautiful language," Bhasthi added.
Not just Bhasthi, but Mushtaq's win--which comes 15 years after Aravind Adiga, another Kannadiga who won the Booker Prize for his 'White Tiger' in 2008-has made most Kannadigas beam with pride.
Many also felt that this is not just a win for Kannada literature, but for every Indian language writer dreaming of global recognition.
