The Supreme Court upholds its tree-felling ban near the Taj Mahal, ensuring environmental protection within a five-kilometer radius.

The Supreme Court on Thursday reiterated its 2015 directive restricting tree felling within a 5-kilometer aerial distance of the Taj Mahal in Agra, UP, without its nod.
The Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ), which is the subject matter before the top court, is an area of approximately 10,400 square kilometers that spreads across Agra, Firozabad, Mathura, Hathras, and Etah districts in UP and Bharatpur district in Rajasthan.
A bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan said tree felling in areas within TTZ beyond the 5-kilometer distance of the historical monument will require the prior permission of the divisional forest officer (DFO) of the central empowered committee (CEC), and the officer will be bound by the provisions of the UP Tree Preservation Act.
"Areas located within 5 kilometers of the Taj Mahal are concerned; the original order dated May 8, 2015, will continue to operate. In such cases, applications will have to be made seeking permission to fell trees, even if trees are less than 50. This court will seek a recommendation from the Central Empowered Committee and will thereafter consider felling of trees," the bench said.
It added, "Unless there is grave urgency for the felling of trees, the Divisional Forest Officer has to impose a condition that actual tree felling can be done only once all other conditions, including compensatory afforestation, are complied with." The DFO or CEC were first directed to ensure compliance with the prescribed conditions before allowing felling of trees.
"We make it clear that the exception will apply only when there is grave urgency to fell trees in the sense that if action of felling of trees is not immediately undertaken, there may be the possibility of loss of human life," the bench said.
The court further sought a report from the CEC indicating whether any additional restrictions should be imposed for protecting two other world heritage structures, namely Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.
The court, in the meantime, dismissed another plea of an Agra-based trust seeking the condition to obtain prior permission to fell trees on private lands to be relaxed.
The TTZ, an area of approximately 10,400 square kilometers, spreads across Agra, Firozabad, Mathura, Hathras, and Etah districts in UP and Bharatpur district in Rajasthan.
The top court, in its May 8 order, mandated that no tree felling could occur in the TTZ without prior court approval, a measure aimed at curbing deforestation and protecting the region&rsquo;s biodiversity.
On December 11, 2019, the apex court modified this order, removing the requirement for prior permission for tree felling on non-forest and private lands within the TTZ.

This move comes as a direct response to Pakistan's recent decision to ban flights owned and operated by Indian carriers from its airspace. The tit-for-tat measures have arisen in the wake of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people.
According to data from the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) summer schedules, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will feel substantial impacts from this airspace closure. PIA had approvals for four weekly flights from Islamabad to Kuala Lumpur, two weekly flights from Lahore to Kuala Lumpur, and two weekly flights from Lahore to Seoul&mdash;all of which are now affected.
The decision compels Pakistan-originating flights to take extensive detours for reaching destinations such as Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, and other points in South and Southeast Asia. However, PIA's primary international routes connect Pakistani cities to Middle Eastern countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and others, which remain unaffected by the Indian ban.
Additionally, PIA announced on April 30 the suspension of flights to Gilgit, Skardu, and other destinations in the northern territories, prompting considerable concern among residents and tourists who depend on air travel for accessing these remote regions. Gilgit and Skardu serve as critical gateways to the northern territories, which lack substantial road infrastructure. The suspension is anticipated to impact passenger mobility and the transport of goods and essential supplies, with land routes often proving unreliable due to harsh weather conditions and poor road quality.
While PIA has not provided an official reason for the suspensions, insiders suggest it is part of a broader restructuring effort by the financially beleaguered airline. Under severe financial strain, PIA is believed to be cutting back on less profitable or operationally challenging routes.
On April 30, India formally issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) stating, "Indian airspace is not available to Pakistan-registered aircraft and aircraft operated or leased by Pakistan airlines. These include military flights." This announcement comes on the heels of the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where militants with alleged links to Pakistan brutally killed 26 tourists.
The diplomatic landscape between India and Pakistan remains tense as both nations grapple with the fallout from these recent developments.

He said Gurugram is regarded as the economic capital of Haryana. It hosts offices of numerous prominent companies and attracts top officials from within the country and abroad. Therefore, maintaining a pollution-free environment in Gurugram is a key priority, he added.
While single-use plastics are banned in Haryana, he noted that due to a lack of awareness, they continue to be used illegally by many shopkeepers, malls, hotels, dhabas, and other establishments.
He pointed out that plastic carry bags made from single-use plastic are often not properly disposed of, contributing significantly to pollution. This form of pollution, he stressed, is particularly harmful.

Raising concerns over rising cheap imports, the Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA) has stated that the situation is likely to worsen significantly amid the recent baseline and reciprocal tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on key Asian exporters, including China and Indonesia.
IMPA has called for urgent policy action to safeguard the domestic paper industry while flagging the threat of global inventories being diverted to India.
The association has sought a ban on imports of rejected and inferior-grade material (stocklot), along with appropriate trade remedial measures, to check cheap paper and paperboard shipments, IMPA said in a statement.
IPMA has also sought monitoring of paper imports under the proposed Inter-Ministerial Import Monitoring Group.
The association has demanded the inclusion of paper and paperboard in the exclusion list of the ASEAN-India FTA and the issuance of Quality Control Orders to curb the influx of sub-standard imports.
IPMA stated that the Indian paper industry, with an estimated annual production of 22 million tonnes and employing over 20 lakh people directly and indirectly, is already grappling with escalating imports of paper and paperboard under preferential trade agreements.
"In the last four years, imports from China and ASEAN have more than doubled. Now, with the US and EU imposing restrictive tariffs and other trade remedial measures to protect their own markets, India is at risk of becoming a dumping ground for excess inventory from export-driven Asian economies," said IPMA president Pawan Agarwal.
IPMA noted that paper and paperboard imports into India touched nearly 1.76 million tonnes in April-December 2024-25, with imports from China (up 36 per cent) and ASEAN (up 23 per cent) during the period.

Twitter suspends over half-dozen accounts of journalists reporting on Elon Musk

"Nothing says free speech like suspending journalists who cover you," Sarah Reese Jones of news commentary website PoliticusUSA said in a tweeted response to posts about the suspensions.

Twitter suspended Thursday the accounts of more than a half-dozen journalists who had been writing about the company and its new owner Elon Musk.
Some of the journalists had been tweeting about Twitter shutting down an @ElonJet account that tracked flights of the billionaire's private jet and about versions of that account hosted at other social networks.
Twitter did not say why the reporters' accounts were suspended.
"Nothing says free speech like suspending journalists who cover you," Sarah Reese Jones of news commentary website PoliticusUSA said in a tweeted response to posts about the suspensions.
Checks at Twitter showed account suspensions included reporters from CNN, The New York Times, and The Washington Post as well as independent journalists.
An account for Twitter rival Mastodon was also suspended, according to a report by NBCNews.
Musk on Wednesday tweeted that a car in Los Angeles carrying one of his children was followed by "a crazy stalker" and seemed to blame the tracking of his jet for this alleged incident. In the tweet, he said legal action is being taken against the person who ran ElonJet.
The Twitter account that tracked flights of Musk's private jet was shut down Wednesday despite the billionaire's statement that he is a free speech absolutist.
"Well it appears @ElonJet is suspended," creator Jack Sweeney tweeted from his personal @JxckSweeney account, which was subsequently suspended as well.
Twitter later sent out word that it updated its policy to prohibit tweets, in most cases, from giving away someone's location in real time.
"Any account doxxing real-time location info of anyone will be suspended, as it is a physical safety violation," Musk said in a tweet.
"This includes posting links to sites with real-time location info."
Doxxing refers to revealing identifying information such as home address or phone number online, typically to target someone for abuse.
Tweets sharing a person's location that are "not same-day" are allowed under the tweaked policy, as are posts about being at a public event such as a concert, Twitter said.
Sweeney attracted attention with his Twitter account that tracks the movements of Musk's plane and even rejected Musk's offer of $5,000 to shut down @ElonJet, which had hundreds of thousands of followers.
Musk had gone public saying he would not touch the account after buying Twitter in a $44 billion deal as part of his commitment to free speech at the platform.
Flight-following websites and several Twitter accounts offer real-time views of air traffic, but that exposure draws pushback ranging from complaints to equipment seizures.

In terms of RBI's circular on Storage of Payment System Data on April 6, 2018, all system providers were directed to ensure that within a period of six months the entire data relating to payment systems is stored only in India.
They were also required to report compliance to RBI and submit a board-approved System Audit Report conducted by a CERT-In empanelled auditor within specified timelines.
