During his meeting with Hamid, President Kovind "reiterated that Bangladesh has a special place in India’s ‘neighbourhood first’ policy".
President Kovind called Hamid a “War Hero” and gifted him two replicas – a Russian made T-55 tank and Mig-21 vintage aircraft used during the 1971 war.
On his part, President Hamid described India as “a very close and faithful friend” of Bangladesh and recalled the overall cooperation of India in the 1971 Liberation War. He thanked the government and people of India.

Pakistan refused to accept Bengali as a state language in the early years after Partition. Many Bengali Muslims strongly objected to the Islamist paradigm imposed by the Pakistani state. Economic disparity, the hegemony of the West Pakistani ruling elite over martial laws, cultural and linguistic differences, ideology, were all the burning points for the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971.
In December 1970, tensions heightened when the Awami League party, led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman based in East Pakistan, won the national elections but West Pakistan parties, namely the Pakistan People&rsquo;s Party (PPP), refused to hand over power.
What led to India&rsquo;s intervention?
In 1971, the Pakistani military began a violent crackdown to suppress the Bengali opposition and the rallies taken out against them. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was arrested and taken to West Pakistan.
As the violence escalated, a large number of refugees streamed into Indian territory, which gave India paved the way for India&rsquo;s intervention.
An investigative commission set up by Pakistan claims 26,000 people were killed in the army&rsquo;s targeted killings, but Bangladesh places the figure at 3 million.

Legend goes that just before the war began Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked the Army Chief if he was ready and he had replied saying ‘I am always ready, sweetie’.
But there was a time when he wasn’t and he minced no words conveying that to the PM.  This is the story of that time as narrated by him years later.  
In April 1971 when refugees started pouring into India’s bordering states from East Pakistan because of West Pakistan’s offensive, the PM called for a cabinet meeting and also summoned Army Chief Manekshaw for it and asked -  
Indira Gandhi: What are you doing about it? 
Sam Manekshaw: Nothing, it's got nothing to do with me. You didn't consult me when you allowed the BSF, the CRP and RAW to encourage the Pakistanis to revolt. Now that you are in trouble, you come to me. I have a long nose. I know what's happening.
Indira Gandhi: I want you to enter Pakistan. 
Sam Manekshaw: That means war! 
Indira Gandhi: I do not mind if it is war. 
Sam Manekshaw: God said let there be light and there was light. Now you say let there be war and there will be war.  But are you prepared? I am certainly not. This is the end of April. The Himalayan passes are opening and there can be an attack from China. 
Sam Manekshaw then went on to tell PM Indira Gandhi that he would need all the road space and the entire railway network to move his men and in peak harvest season that meant that the produce wouldn’t be able to be transported and it would rot. He explained to her how the rains in East Pakistan would adversely affect the troop movement and that Air Force would not be able to provide support because of the weather.  
 Sam Manekshaw: My armoured division is supposed to have 189 tanks operational but only 11 are fit to fight. 
And when the Finance Minister asked him why only 11 tanks were operational, the Army Chief had a quip for him too. 
Sam Manekshaw: Because you are the Finance Minister. I have been asking you for money over a year and you say you haven’t got it. 
Sam Manekshaw: Now Prime Minister, give me your orders.  
The grim Prime Minister with her teeth clenched replied -
 Indira Gandhi: The Cabinet will meet again at four o'clock. 
 
As the ministers started to leave the PM asked the Chief to stay back.  
 Sam Manekshaw: Resignation on grounds of health, mental or physical? 
Indira Gandhi: Everything you told me is true. 
Sam Manekshaw: Yes! It is my job to tell you the truth. And it is my job to fight, it is my job to fight to win and I have to tell you the truth. 
Indira Gandhi: All right Sam, you know what I want? 
Sam Manekshaw: Yes, I know what you want 
7 months later on December 3, India went to war with Pakistan... on 16th December Pakistan Army surrendered, India won and Bangladesh gained its independence.

Among those awarded Padma awards this week by President Ram Nath Kovid was a former Pakistani soldier. Surprised? Here is his story.
Lt Colonel Qazi Sajjad Ali Zahir, a former Pakistani soldier, risked his life by crossing over to India and helping liberate Bangladesh in the 1971 war.
Lt Colonel Zahir largely remained under the radar till now owing to the confidential nature of military business.
But he was thrown into the spotlight this week as he stepped onto the podium to receive the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian honours of the country.
As a 20-year-old officer posted in Sialkot, Lt Col Zahir crossed over to India at the height of the Pakistani army's atrocities and human rights violations in Bangladesh.
He was grilled by Indian officers for many days who initially suspected him to be a Pakistani spy. However, after Lt Col Zahir showed confidential documents of the Pakistani Army, he was sent to a safe house in Delhi.
Lt Col Zahir later moved to Bangladesh, where he trained the Mukti Bahini in guerilla warfare to take on Pakistani forces.
The former Pakistan soldiers says there's a death sentence pending in his name in Pakistan for the past 50 years.
In Bangladesh, however, Lt Col Zahir is a hero. He has been honoured with gallantry medals such as the Bir Protik and the country's highest civilian honour, the Swadhinata Padak.
Now India, too, has recognised his contributions to the military history of the subcontinent and conferred on him the Padma Shri.
The honours comes as India and Bangladesh are celebrating 50 years of the country's libration.

A US commission on religious freedom has said that it is "gravely troubled" over the recent wave of violence against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh and urged the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to launch a crackdown on extremist elements that fan anti-Hindu sentiments.
Attacks on Hindu temples have intensified in Bangladesh since last Wednesday after an alleged blasphemous post surfaced on social media during the Durga Puja celebrations.
On late Sunday night, a mob damaged 66 houses and set on fire at least 20 homes of Hindus in Bangladesh.
Condemning the attack, US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) Chair Nadine Maenza said: "the USCIRF is gravely troubled about the recent wave of violence against Hindus that has erupted in Bangladesh".
"We applaud Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's response to the heinous crimes by sending paramilitary forces to contain violence. However, we continue to urge the Bangladeshi government to crackdown on extremist elements that fan anti-Hindu sentiments in the country," she said.
The USCIRF is especially disturbed by the widespread attacks and desecration of Hindu places of worship, said its Commissioner Anurima Bhargava.
According to an official account in Bangladesh, at least five people were killed in the recent communal clashes in the country. Unconfirmed reports suggest the casualty figures to be as high as seven.
The police said over 450 suspected temple attackers were arrested so far in different parts of the country and a manhunt was underway to track down more since Wednesday.

A US commission on religious freedom has said that it is "gravely troubled" over the recent wave of violence against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh and urged the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to launch a crackdown on extremist elements that fan anti-Hindu sentiments.
Attacks on Hindu temples have intensified in Bangladesh since last Wednesday after an alleged blasphemous post surfaced on social media during the Durga Puja celebrations.
On late Sunday night, a mob damaged 66 houses and set on fire at least 20 homes of Hindus in Bangladesh.
Condemning the attack, US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) Chair Nadine Maenza said: "the USCIRF is gravely troubled about the recent wave of violence against Hindus that has erupted in Bangladesh".
"We applaud Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's response to the heinous crimes by sending paramilitary forces to contain violence. However, we continue to urge the Bangladeshi government to crackdown on extremist elements that fan anti-Hindu sentiments in the country," she said.
The USCIRF is especially disturbed by the widespread attacks and desecration of Hindu places of worship, said its Commissioner Anurima Bhargava.
According to an official account in Bangladesh, at least five people were killed in the recent communal clashes in the country. Unconfirmed reports suggest the casualty figures to be as high as seven.
The police said over 450 suspected temple attackers were arrested so far in different parts of the country and a manhunt was underway to track down more since Wednesday.

Troops of the BSF are on alert along the Indo-Bangladesh border after the police commissioner of Dhaka, Shafikul Islam claimed that some radical youths were trying to sneak into India to make their way to join the Taliban in Afghanistan, India Today reported on Sunday.
Reacting to Shafikul Islam's remark, the DIG of BSF South Bengal Frontier, SS Guleria, said troops are on alert along border areas after Bangladesh expressed concern in this regard. He however added that they have not arrested any youth trying to sneak into India.
Guleria also said that authorities in Bangladesh had already conveyed to their counterparts in India that a few extremists in the country are extremely excited about the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan.
Bangladesh's foreign ministry also stated that they "are carefully watching" the developments in Afghanistan.
