NCERT has revised the Class XII political science textbook to drop some references to the Babri Masjid, the politics of Hindutva and the 2002 Gujarat riots.&nbsp;
The revised syllabus will come into effect for the academic year 2024-25.
NCERT, the apex body tasked with drafting school textbooks for he Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), publicised the changes on Thursday.
Some revisions pertain to the Chapter &lsquo;Politics in India since Independence,&rsquo; which lists Ayodhya movement as one of the five key &ldquo;recent developments&rdquo; in Indian politics.
The summary in the current version read: &ldquo;What is the legacy of the Ram Janambhoomi movement and the Ayodhya demolition for the nature of political mobilisation?&rdquo; This has been changed to &ldquo;What is the legacy of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement?&rdquo;
In the same chapter a reference to Babri Masjid and Hindutva were dropped.
A paragraph in the original chapter, with a four-page section on the Ayodhya dispute, read: "A number of events culminated in the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya (known as Babri Masjid) in December 1992. This event symbolised and triggered various changes in the politics of the country and intensified debates about the nature of Indian nationalism and secularism. These developments are associated with the rise of the BJP and the politics of &lsquo;Hindutva&rsquo;.&rdquo;
The new version will read: "The centuries old legal and political dispute over the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya started influencing the politics of India which gave birth to various political changes. The Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Movement, becoming the central issue, transformed the direction of the discourse on secularism and democracy. These changes culminated in the construction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya following the decision of the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court (which was announced on November 9, 2019).&rdquo;
&ldquo;Content is updated as per latest development in politics. Text on Ayodhya issue has been thoroughly revised because of the latest changes brought by Supreme Court&rsquo;s Constitutional bench verdict and its widespread welcoming reception,&rdquo; NCERT said on its website.
In the chapter on Democratic Rights, a reference to the Gujarat riots was dropped while citing cases of human rights violations.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday appeared to make a pitch in the assembly for a temple where a mosque stands now in Mathura, saying that Krishna Kanhaiya wouldn't have it any other way.
The CM indirectly also referred to two other shrines involved in temple-mosque disputes in his state -- the Ram temple in Ayodhya built after a Supreme Court go-ahead in 2019 and the Kashi Vishwanath shrine in Varanasi.
Participating in a debate on the Governor's Address, he recalled the Mahabharata episode in which the Kauravas refused to concede land equivalent to the "point of a needle" to the Pandavas.
He said the same thing happened with Kashi, Mathura, and Ayodhya. "We have asked only for three." These are not ordinary places &ndash; these are lands of gods, he said.
"But there is stubbornness, and when this stubbornness starts getting political and the politics of vote-bank starts, then a controversy arises," he said.
Adityanath alleged that foreign invaders not only looted the wealth of India, but also tried to end faith in the country. "It is unfortunate that after independence, there were malicious attempts to glorify those foreign invaders for vote-bank." The country is not ready to accept it, he said.
The CM referred to the recent consecration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Ram temple, and also slammed the previous Samajwadi Party (SP) government for ignoring the development of Ayodhya.
"When people saw the celebration in Ayodhya, Nandi Baba too said why he should wait. Without waiting, he too got the barricades removed in the night," he said.
And Lord Krishna too wasn't the one to be dissuaded, he added. "Aur hamare Krishna Kanhaiya kahan manane wale hein." The Nandi Baba reference was to a recent Varanasi district court order allowing a Hindu priest to offer prayers in a cellar in the Gyanvapi mosque, located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
The order came on a plea by a Varanasi resident who claimed that his grandfather used to offer regular prayers in the cellar up to 1993, when he was stopped from doing so.
The same night, hours after the court order, the local administration removed a section of the barricade to provide access to the basement.
A court-ordered Archaeological Survey of India report recently suggested that the Gyanvapi mosque was built after the demolition of a temple there during Aurangzeb&rsquo;s rule.
In Mathura, Hindu litigants make a similar claim.
They say the Shahi Idgah was built on the site believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna. A Krishna temple stands next to the mosque.
The CM in his speech also accused the previous SP government of ignoring development in Ayodhya. "We agree that the temple dispute was in the court but the roads there could have been widened. The 'ghats' there could have been revived," he said.
"Electricity could have been supplied to the residents of Ayodhya. Sanitation arrangements could have been made there. Better health facilities could have been provided there. An airport could have been built there," he added.

"With what intentions was this development work stopped?" Adityanath said. &ldquo;What was the intention in blocking the development of Ayodhya, blocking the development of Kashi, blocking the development of Mathura-Vrindavan?&rdquo; SP leader and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav was present in the House.
Adityanath also said that he had hoped Yadav, also Leader of Opposition in UP Assembly, will speak about "the biggest event of this century" (the consecration of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya). "But he kept diverting attention." In an apparent reference to SP MLA and Akhilesh Yadav's uncle Shivpal Yadav, the chief minister said, "After all, the names of three family members were there (in the Lok Sabha candidates' list), but why was chachu's (uncle) name not there? If these people had believed in Lord Ram, they would not have done injustice to chachu."

The resident&rsquo;s welfare association in Delhi&rsquo;s Jangpura Extension has sent a notice to Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar and daughter Suranya Aiyar over her comments on social media against the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya.
The letter dated January 27, 2024, and shared on X by the head of BJP's IT cell Amit Malviya, censured Suranya for "creating hatred and tension" in the colony and asked her father to condemn her actions. The letter suggests they "move out to another colony," if they wished to continue their protests.
Suranya told Indian Express that she does not live in the house in Jangpura. The house is owned by Mani Shankar Aiyar, according to his election affidavit.
The notice was sent days after Suranya Aiyar, in social media post, said she observing a 3-day fast in protest against the 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony. She called it an "expression of love and sorrow to fellow Muslim citizens," and went on to condemn "what is being done in the name of Hinduism and nationalism in Ayodhya."
The association termed her comments hate speech and said they "do not appreciate a resident rant which may disturb the peace in the colony or hurt religious sentiments of the residents." The notice went on to ask Suranya to refrain from "provoking anyone" or "creating mistrust among the people."&nbsp;
The letter pointed out that the Ram Mandir was being built after a "5-0 Supreme Court verdict" and suggested Suranya move court to challenge it, rather than "take out frustration" and hurt religious sentiments.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday released commemorative postage stamps on the Ram temple in Ayodhya and a book of stamps issued on Lord Ram around the world.
Officials said the components of the design include the Ram temple, the chaupai 'Mangal Bhavan Amangal Hari', Sun, Saryu river and sculptures in and around the temple.
The six stamps are on the Ram temple, Lord Ganesh, Lord Hanuman, Jatayu, Kevatraj and Ma Shabri, they said.
The stamp book is an attempt to showcase the international appeal of Lord Ram and the 48-page book covers stamps issued by more than of 20 countries, including the US, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada, Cambodia, and organisations like the UN.
A gold leaf of sun rays and 'chaupai' lend a majestic icon to this miniature sheet, they noted, adding that the five physical elements, sky, air, fire, earth and water, are reflected through various design elements and establish their perfect harmony which is essential for all manifestations.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said he will not attend the Ram temple Pran Pratistha (consecration) ceremony in Ayodhya on January 22, even as he expressed gratitude for receiving the invite.
In a letter to General Secretary of Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Champat Rai, Sharad Pawar wrote that he would visit Ayodhya after the excitement of the inauguration dies down and it would be easier to get darshan.
"Devotees of Ram are excited about the celebration in Ayodhya and they are reaching there in large numbers. The joy of the historic event will reach me through them. After the January 22 event, it will be easier to spend time and get darshan of Ram Lalla," Pawar said.
He added that he plans to visit Ayodhya soon. Pawar also pointed out that "By then, the construction of Ram temple will also be complete."
Senior Congress leaders, last week, declined the invite saying that the BJP and RSS have made the Ram temple a political project. Congress further said that the inauguration of the incomplete temple in Ayodhya is being brought forward for electoral gain.
Among the leaders who have decided to skip the event include, Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary.
Two of the four shankaracharyas have also said they will not attend the Pran Pratistha, as the ceremony was being conducted "against Hindu scriptures." They too question why the consecration was being held before the temple was complete and hinted that it was turning into a political show.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the inaugural ceremony of the Ram temple next week. Pre-Praan Pratishtha sacraments have already begun in Ayodhya in the run up to the big event on January 22. The idol of lord Ram is expected to be around 150-200 kgs and will be placed at its position in the 'Garbh Griha' of the temple on January 18.&nbsp;

A local told the publication that tourists who have been visiting the city for the past 8 months give donations as per their wish and residents have also started applying sandalwood tilak to welcome tourists, with the name of Lord Ram depicted in it. With the donations, people are receiving additional sources of income.&nbsp;
"We have been applying tilaks on the foreheads of tourists for the last 8 months. The name of Lord Ram is depicted in the tilaks. Tourists give donations based on their wishes. Earlier, we used to work as city guides. We brief the tourists on the main temples in the city. There is a lot of development work going on in the city", a local told The Economic Times.
