An avalanche struck Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg region, leaving one foreigner dead and another missing.

One foreigner died, while another is reportedly missing after an avalanche hit Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg region on February 22. The deceased was later identified as Hanten from Moscow in Russia. A plice officer told PTI news agency that his body has been taken to the Tangmarg sub-district hospital for post-mortem.
The avalanche struck the Kongdoori slopes, trapping several skiers. Officials told PTI news agency that the foreigners had gone to the ski slopes without local residents, they said.
According to police, the group of seven Russians and a local guide ventured into a non-ski zone in the Army Ridge area, which is avalanche prone.
"There was an avalanche warning but they still ventured into that zone and unfortunately one skier died," Gulmarg police station SHO Haroon Kar said.
Besides the Army and police, choppers also have been roped in for the rescue operation.&nbsp;
The rescued persons were treated at a local hospital and one foreigner was being shifted to Srinagar for special treatment.
A government spokesperson said the ongoing 4th Khelo India Winter Games remain unaffected by the incident.
Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council secretary Nuzhat Gull said all athletes participating in the ongoing 4th Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg were safe.
"All Khelo India athletes are safe after the avalanche hit Khilanmarg area of Gulmarg... All the fixtures are being run as per schedule," Gull posted on X.
The Winter Games began on Wednesday and will conclude on Sunday.
A spokesman of the Sports Council said all precautionary measures were in place to ensure safety of the players.

An avalanche has blocked Sindh stream in Sonamarg area of Jammu and Kashmir, changing the course of the waterbody, officials said here on Wednesday.
An avalanche struck the Hung area of Sonamarg on Srinagar-Leh road, blocking the flow of water in the Sindh stream, they said.
The blockade caused by the avalanche debris forced a change in the course of the stream and water started flowing over the road adjacent to it, the officials said.
Authorities have pressed heavy machinery into service to clear the debris of the avalanche so that the waterbody takes its original course.
Kashmir witnessed &ldquo;moderate&rdquo; to &ldquo;heavy&rdquo; snowfall over the past three days, increasing the possibility of avalanches in hilly and mountainous areas of the valley.

Two labourers of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were killed while another is missing after an avalanche hit them near Chika in the Lahaul subdivision of Lahaul-Spiti district on Sunday evening.
The bodies of Ram Budha from Nepal and Rakesh from Chamba have been recovered while 27-year-old Passang Chhering Lama, a resident of Nepal, remains missing and feared buried in snow, according to the state emergency operation centre.
The search operation for Lama that was continued for hours was called off at night due to low temperature and visibility.
"Two people were dead and one was missing in an avalanche that occurred near Chika in Lahaul and Spiti district at around 3 pm yesterday. Rescue efforts were called off due to low temperature and visibility, it will resume tomorrow," the State Emergency Operation Centre said.

The bodies of the two Polish nationals have been recovered and moved to the hospital for medico-legal procedures.

Two Polish tourists died in a massive avalanche that hit the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir's ski resort Gulmarg on Wednesday, police said.
Skiers, both foreigners and locals, were at the slopes when the avalanche hit. At least 19 foreigners have so far been rescued successfully, police said.
The bodies of the two Polish nationals have been recovered and moved to the hospital for medico-legal procedures.
Rescue operations are still in progress in the tourist town, in Baramulla district, with police teams on the job.
The number of those missing is not known.
"Avalanche hit the Afarwat peak #HapathKhud at famous ski resort in #Gulmarg. #Rescue operation has been launched by #Baramulla Police along with other agencies. Reports of some skiers being trapped are being corroborated. More details shall follow," a spokesperson of the Baramulla district police said on Twitter soon after the incident. Videos of the avalanche, showing people running for their lives, circulated widely on social media.&nbsp;

Avalanche warnings have been issued for 12 districts, including Kupawara which witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall a day before.

A low-intensity avalanche struck the Sarbal area in the Ganderbal District of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. However, no loss of life or property was reported in the incident.
"A low-intensity avalanche hit Sarbal area where the Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL)'s workshop was being held," officials said. As reported by company officials everyone's safe. No loss of life or property is reported, they said, while adding that police and SDRF teams have been deployed and monitoring the situation.

A video of the incident also went viral on social media. Avalanche warnings have been issued for 12 districts, including Kupawara which witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall a day before.

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on January 13 issued an avalanche warning for 10 districts which have witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall over the past 48 hours.
The State Disaster Management Authority issued a 'high danger' avalanche warning for Bandipora and Kupwara districts of north Kashmir and a 'medium danger' warning for Baramulla and Ganderbal districts.
"Avalanche with high danger level is likely to occur above 2,000 metres of Bandipora and Kupwara districts in the next 24 hours.
"Avalanche with medium danger level is likely to occur above 2,000 metres of Baramulla and Ganderbal districts in the next 24 hours," SDMA officials said.
They said avalanches with low danger levels are likely to occur in areas 2,000 metres above sea level in Anantnag, Doda, Kishtwar, Kulgam, Poonch and Ramban.
People living in these areas are advised to take precautions and avoid avalanche-prone areas, the officials said.
The higher reaches of Kashmir have been receiving moderate to heavy snowfall for the past 48 hours. (PTI)

In a video shared by Tashi, avalanches can be seen descending toward the base camp. 
He further divulged that few tents were destroyed in the avalanche with no human casualties, adding, "more than 3 dozen tents have been damaged today."  Some of the expedition companies are calling off their attempt for the season.
Notably, it comes a week after the last one, which had left two persons dead. According to the Tourism Department of Nepal, over a dozen people were injured, including an Indian after an avalanche ripped through just below camp 4 on September 26.
The weather has not been great throughout the season. An avalanche occurred in the mountain a few days ago also. Over 400 permits were issued by the Department of Tourism to climb Manaslu this year.

Fourteen members of a mountaineering team which had gone missing after being hit by an avalanche at Draupadi Ka Danda peak in Uttarakashi district were rescued on Wednesday as a multi-agency rescue operation aided by IAF helicopters resumed.
Principal of the Uttarkashi-based Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) Col Amit Bisht had said on Tuesday that ten bodies were spotted out of which four had been recovered. However, police confirmed the death of four.
Earlier in the day, the Uttarakhand Police released a list of 28 trainee mountaineers who were missing in the avalanche at the height of 17,000 feet.
Sub Divisional Magistrate, Bhatwari, Chattar Singh Chauhan said 14 members of the team out of which six had sustained minor injuries in the avalanche were airlifted to Matli in two sorties, Eight more rescued in another sortie are alright, he said, adding they are being sent back to the NIM.
Out of the 14 rescued so far 10 are trainees and four instructors, he said, adding NDRF, SDRF, ITBP and NIM are jointly conducting the search and rescue operations.
A search is on to find the rest of the 41-member team of mountaineers who have been missing since the avalanche occurred at 8.45 am on Tuesday.
The missing are said to be stuck in the crevasse in Dokriani Bamak glacier where the avalanche struck. The trainees hail from West Bengal, Delhi, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Assam, Haryana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
The bodies recovered include that of mountaineer Savita Kanswal who had climbed the Everest in May this year. She was from Lonthru village in Uttarkashi district. Search and rescue operations resumed on Wednesday morning with four ITBP jawans dispatched in Cheetah and ALH helicopters to Dokrani Glacier.
The rescue operations had to be halted due to darkness and inclement weather on Tuesday.

An avalanche has hit the Danda-2 mountain peak in Draupadi, Uttarkhand, prompting a relief and rescue operation after reports of mountaineering trainees stuck emerged. As many as 28 trainees of Nehru Mountaineering Institute are being feared trapped. The peak is located in the Gangotri range of Garhwal.  Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami taking cognizance of the matter announced that a rescue operation has been launched by the district administration."NDRF, SDRF, Army and ITBP personnel are carrying out the rescue work," he tweeted.

Premier Mario Draghi and the head of the national Civil Protection agency were expected to go on Monday to Canazei, a tourist town in the Dolomite range which has been serving as a base for rescuers. 
Relatives were also expected to go to the town to identify bodies when rescuers can safely remove them from the mountain. 
What caused a pinnacle of the glacier to break off and thunder down the slope at a speed estimated by experts at some 300 kph (nearly 200 mph), wasn't immediately known.

A combined team of Army, Air Force and the State Disaster Response Force are also looking for the missing men.

The Defence Ministry on Saturday informed that the bodies of four Indian Navy officers and a sailor have been recovered from the site of an avalanche at Mount Trishul in Uttarakhand. Rescuers are looking for a fifth naval climber and a porter, who went missing after the incident.
The deceased Navy personnel are Lt Commander Rajnikant Yadav, Lt Commander Yogesh Tiwari, Lt Commander Anant Kukreti and sailor Hari Om

At least 5 people have died and 5 are feared missing after an avalanche buried a vehicle carrying 10 passengers at Khardung La pass in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. Rescue operations are being carried by the district administration, police and the State Disaster Relief Force personnel at 17,500 feet, roughly 40 km from Leh town. Five bodies have been recovered so far.
