India&rsquo;s passenger vehicle sales hit a rough patch in July.Data published by the auto industry body, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), shows that passenger vehicle wholesale slipped to 3.41 lakh units, marking a 2.3 percent year-on-year decline. Overall passenger vehicle dispatches from companies to dealers stood at 3.5 lakh units in July 2023. On a month-on-month comparison, the sales figure remained almost unchanged compared to June&rsquo;s tally of 3.41 lakh. Two-Wheelers in the Fast Lane While passenger vehicle wholesale slipped in July, the two-wheeler segment entered the fast lane. SIAM data shows that two-wheeler makers dispatched a total of 14.4 lakh units last month, compared to 12.8 lakh units in July 2023. This translates to a double-digit growth of 12.5 percent year-on-year. However, on a month-on-month basis, two-wheeler sales slipped in July 2024. In June, total two-wheeler sales had risen to 16.1 lakh units. Three-Wheeler Sales: An Uptick In the three-wheeler segment, July sales were up 5.1 percent year-on-year. Three-wheeler makers sold a total of 59,073 units last month, compared to 56,204 units in July last year.In June 2024 also three-wheeler sales had seen strong growth, rising to a total of 59,544 units. Auto Stocks Mostly Unchanged
Auto shares remained almost unchanged after the release of the SIAM data. India&rsquo;s leading personal vehicle makers, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra were trading in the green at the time of the publication of this article. In the two-wheeler segment, Hero MotoCorp was trading with sharp cuts as its first quarter performance missed street expectations.&nbsp;

Despite global uncertainty, exports of made-in-India cars have reached pre-covid levels. This comes amid a surge in demand for models such as Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos and Mahindra XUV700 from customers in Australia, Latin America and Southeast Asia.
The Indian government has also urged to increase exports to a quarter of its total output by 2030, up from 14% in FY23, and even go beyond that.&nbsp;
<h3>Made-in-India cars</h3>
The Economic Times, quoted industry estimates and said that Indian carmakers are set to ship more than 6,75,000 vehicles in the fiscal year that ends March 31, recovering from a low of 4,04,000 reported in the aftermath of the pandemic in FY21. In the previous financial year, around 6,63,000 cars were exported from the country.
Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai dominated the exports, covering two-thirds of all cars shipped out of the country. As per industry data, domestic auto makers like Tata Motors and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra had a modest share of 0.4% and 2%, respectively.
Meanwhile, Kia, Volkswagen and Nissan feature among the top five carmakers exporting from India with a share of 9%, 7% and 6% respectively.&nbsp;
<h3>Export by domestic automakers&nbsp;</h3>
The Economic Times quoted industry experts and mentioned that while Tata Motors and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra have over the years attempted to step up exports, the lack of a relevant product portfolio high on quality and features has limited sales overseas.&nbsp;
"Indian companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) have been trying to scale up exports for many years now," VG Ramakrishnan, managing partner at consultancy firm Avanteum Advisors told The Economic Times.
"However, they did not have the right products for international markets, where customers are very discerning about quality, specifications, brand commitments. Even in a market like Sri Lanka, where a lot of used cars are sold, buyers look for right-hand drive models from Japan which have more features", he added.
VG Ramakrishnan further told the publication that though the share of both the auto makers in terms of export is low, the overseas sales are slowly improving. This comes as both companies are working on launching a range of world-class products with improved portfolio leading to a gradual rise in international sale.
Tata Motors exported 1,998 vehicles and Mahindra 9,218 vehicles in the first 11 months of the fiscal. Maruti Suzuki shipped 202,786 units and Hyundai 129,755 units in the same period.
As per The Economic Times, Mahindra has started working on expanding its overseas footprint with a refreshed portfolio of vehicles such as the XUV700 &amp; Scorpio-N and a soon-to-be-launched range of electric vehicles.
"Our aim is to scale international operations revenue by 2.5x by FY26 and further onward. We are making products that can compete with the best in the world, at prices which are affordable. We believe that our products have reached a stage of maturity where we can go and start competing around the world. We think exports will be a lever for growth," Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director and CEO, automotive and farm equipment, M&amp;M, had told The Economic Times.
<h3>Production Boost</h3>
The report further mentioned that the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki is working on tripling exports by the turn of the decade, aligned with the Centre's bid for a bigger play in the global automotive trade.
The firm is also in the process of investing Rs 45,000 crore to double annual production capacity to 4 million units by 2030 - million destined for the domestic market and 750,000-800,000 for exports. Likewise, South Korea's Hyundai also aims to increase shipments once its second factory at Talegaon becomes operational next year.
"Today, made-in-India cars are on a par with the world," Maruti Suzuki chairman RC Bhargava told The Economic Times. "Our quality is second to none. Toyota and Suzuki are both placing orders (for exports). They have distribution channels globally and are leveraging them, helping us boost international sales." Suzuki has a global alliance with Toyota for manufacturing, joint development of products, research, among others.

In October, retail sales of automobiles in the domestic market declined by 7.73 percent year-on-year to 2,117,596 units, with two-wheeler sales down 12.60 percent and passenger vehicle sales slipping by 1.35 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.
On a more positive note, three-wheeler sales saw a significant increase of 45.63 percent, and tractor retail sales grew by 6.15 percent. Commercial vehicles also recorded a growth of 10.26 percent.
<h3>Shraddh Period Impact on Auto Sales</h3>
The decline in sales was partially attributed to the inauspicious period of Shraddh affecting new purchases. However, a month-on-month comparison revealed a 13 percent growth, indicating resilient market demand, particularly during the ongoing festivities. During Navratri, several automotive categories experienced significant growth, with two-wheelers, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles, and passenger vehicles seeing increases of 22 percent, 43 percent, 9 percent, and 7 percent, respectively.
FADA President Manish Raj Singhania highlighted the positive trends in the two-wheeler category during Navratri, driven by festive cheer and stronger rural demand. The passenger vehicle segment witnessed a surge in bookings, particularly SUVs, and the availability of attractive consumer offers. However, regional variations, local elections, and market saturation impacted sales in different regions.
The three-wheeler segment continued to see demand, partly due to competitive finance options and a growing interest in e-Rickshaws, reflecting a move toward electrification.
<h3>Mixed Outlook for the Auto Sector</h3>
Looking ahead, FADA mentioned a mixed near-term outlook for the auto sector, with the festive and harvest seasons expected to boost two-wheeler sales, while the commercial vehicle segment anticipates a strong November. However, the passenger vehicle segment faces challenges with high inventory levels that require immediate attention to avoid dealer distress as the year closes.

Two-wheeler retail sales rose to 14,45,867 in March, up 12% from 12,86,109 units in the year-ago period, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) said in a statement.
Similarly, the commercial vehicle registrations last month rose to 92,790 units, up 10% from 84,124 units in March last year.
Three-wheeler retail sales rose 69% year-on-year to 86,857 units in March.
Tractor registrations last month rose to 81,607 units, up 4% from 78,070 units in March 2022.
Total registrations last month rose to 20,41,847 units in March, up 14% from 17,92,802 units in the year-ago period.
For the last financial year, passenger vehicle registrations rose by 23% to 36,20,039 units, as against 29,42,273 units in 2021-22.
Two-wheelers retails rose by 19% to 1,59,95,968 units in FY23 as compared to 1,34,94,214 units in 2021-22.
Commercial vehicle retails rose 33%, three-wheelers retail was up 84 per cent and tractor registrations saw an 8% rise year-on-year last fiscal.
Total sales increased by 21% to 2,21,50,222 units last fiscal as compared to 1,83,27,326 units in FY22.

Automobile retail sales in India rose 14 per cent in January on the back of robust registrations across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and tractors, dealers' body Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said on Monday.
Total sales across categories last month rose to 18,26,669 units, as compared to 16,08,505 units in January 2022.
Passenger vehicle registrations rose to 3,40,220 units last month, an increase of 22 per cent as compared to 2,79,050 units in the year-ago period.
Similarly, two-wheeler retails rose to 12,65,069 units last month, as against 11,49,351 units in January 2022, an increase of 10 per cent.
Three-wheeler retail sales rose to 65,796 units, up 59 per cent from 41,487 units in January last year.
Commercial vehicle registrations were at 82,428 units in January, up 16 per cent from 70,853 units in the year-ago period.
Similarly, tractor sales rose by 8 per cent to 73,156 units last month, as against 67,764 units in January last year.
Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) President Manish Raj Singhania said the total retail sales in January grew as compared with year-ago period but still remained down by 8 per cent when compared to pre-Covid month of January 2020.

<h3>Road tax on vehicles to make EVs more lucrative</h3>
The proposal for raising road tax on specific categories of vehicles has been forwarded by the transport department to the finance department.
Depending on the vehicle's fuel variant and price band, road tax in Delhi varies between 4% and 12.5% on individually owned private cars.
The road tax on private vehicles in Delhi is presently up to 12.5 per cent depending on fuel type and price range.
<h3>No tax for&nbsp;Electric Vehicles</h3>
Under the&nbsp;Delhi Electric Vehicles Policy, which was announced in 2020, EVs &mdash; both two-wheeled and four-wheeled &mdash; are exempted from paying any road tax.
