The Delhi government has deregistered over one lakh 10-year-old diesel vehicles, directing the owners to either retrofitting these vehicles with electric kits or to sell those to other states after acquiring a no-objection certificate. This however may not be the end of taking old vehicles off the roads in a bid to reduce pollution. A senior officer from the Delhi transport department conveyed that petrol vehicles which are older than 15 years will also be deregistered in the coming days.Delhi's transport department has warned that if any deregistered petrol vehicle older than 15 years is found plying on roads, it will be impounded and sent for scrapping.The deregistered diesel vehicles include around 87,000 cars, and the rest include goods carriers, buses, and tractors.
Currently, Delhi has roughly around 43 lakh, including 32 lakh two-wheelers and 11 lakh cars which are older than 15-year.

Hero MotoCorp, India's largest manufacturer of motorcycles and scooters reported a drop of 40% in sales for the month of November. In a statement released to the exchanges Hero Moto said it sold 3.49 lakh vehicles vs 5.91 lakh vehicles in the same month last year. According to the company, delay in harvesting due to the late withdrawal of monsoon in many parts of the country, impacted the demand after the festive season. But the management remains optimistic stating "With the economy gradually opening up coupled with several other positive indicators, such as encouraging farm activity, confident consumer index and marriage season, a swift revival in sales is expected in the fourth quarter." It is not just Hero that has hit a speed bump in sales, competitor Bajaj also reported a fall in sales for November, though a smaller one with a 10% drop. While south based TVS Motor reported a 29% drop in it's 2 wheeler sales as well.

Starting from April next year, vehicle owners will have to shell out Rs 5,000 for renewal of registration of the cars older than 15 years, which is eight times more than what they currently pay.
The road transport and highways ministry has issued a notification for the renewal of the certificate of registration of old vehicles and this new rule is part of the government's overall plan to roll out the National Automobile Scrappage Policy.
According to the notification, renewal of certificate of fitness for a bus or truck older than 15 years will cost nearly eight times higher charges than owners of the commercial vehicles currently pay.
While charges of registration renewal of a 15-year-old car would be Rs 5,000 compared to the current fee of Rs 600, the charges of registration renewal of old bikes would be Rs 1,000 compared to the current fee of Rs 300.
Renewal of registration for imported bikes and cars will cost Rs 10,000 and Rs 40,000, respectively.
The notification said an additional fee of Rs 50 for each day of delay after the expiry of certificate of fitness shall be levied.
According to the notification, these rules may be called the Central Motor Vehicles (23rd Amendment) Rules, 2021, and shall come into force with effect from April 1, 2022.
