Days after the Allahabad High Court requested the poll panel to immediately postpone the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh for one to two months amid rising cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, the panel will meet senior officials of the ministry of health and family welfare, including secretary Rajesh Bhushan today, ANI has reported.
Last Thursday, the high court also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ECI to immediately ban rallies and public meetings of political parties in the state.
Assembly elections are due in five states including Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Goa and Punjab in February-March.
The Election Commission had earlier directed the poll-bound states to “exponentially ramp up vaccination”, especially in the “low coverage districts”.
The Union health ministry has also sent multidisciplinary teams to Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The teams will assess the situation, suggest remedial actions and submit a report every evening.
Meanwhile, the number the Omicron variant cases detected across India on Sunday crossed the 500-mark. More than 150 of these cases have already recovered.

On a 2-day visit to Goa, Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal sounded the poll bugle in the state with electoral promises in the power sector, similar to those that helped him win the 2014 Delhi Assembly elections.&nbsp;
The Delhi Chief Minister made 4 guarantees- first, 300 units of free electricity per month for every Goan household which will result in 87% of the state receiving zero electricity bills. Second, a &lsquo;clean slate&rsquo; or a promise to waive off all old or pending electricity bills. Third, an uninterrupted 24/7 power supply. And fourth, free electricity to the farmers.
Kejriwal has made similar promises for subsidised electricity to voters in Uttarakhand and Punjab, two more states which will go to polls next year.

'No religious teaching with public fund': madrassas to shut in Assam

The Assam government will close down all state-run madrasas as it can't afford to teach religious scriptures with public funds, state Education and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday. The state government will bring out a notification in November to this effect, he added. The notification will also detail the future of Sanskrit tols or ashrams in the state. Assam spends about Rs 3-4 crore on 614 government-aided recognised madrasas and about Rs 1 crore on Sanskrit tols in the state annually. Following the government's announcement, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal said that if the BJP-led government shut down the madrasas, his party would re-open them after coming to power in the 2021 assembly polls.
