Assam has remained a top priority for the BJP. Narendra Modi as Prime Minister has the record number of visits to the state under his name. The perennial issue of migrant influx was ably handled by Home Minister Amit Shah and Hemanta Biswa Sarma, who repeatedly vowed to take action. Like in the past, the BJP denounced the Congress-led 'Mahajot' as an &lsquo;Alliance of Mughals&rsquo;.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Shah-Sarma duo were successful in pushing the contentious CAA under the rugs of oblivion.&nbsp;
&nbsp;Political analysts say&nbsp;the BJP&rsquo;s pre-election sops and financial aid schemes impressed many.&nbsp;

For the Congress and its allies, a weak leadership at the Centre, which woke up late to the campaign, remains a cause of worry. The grand old party must have terribly missed the late Tarun Gogoi, who ably kept the BJP and allies away from power for 15 years. His boots were indeed too big to fill.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
The introspection about the alliance with 'Mai party' AIDUF is natural. The Congress must be asking that did alliance with AIUDF help the BJP to consolidate the Hindu vote.

In Assam trends have given a clear edge to the ruling BJP-led NDA. Despite the Opposition led by the Congress cornering the BJP over the contentious CAA and NRC, Prime Minister Modi led party may have drawn a bigger point at the national stage with this win.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged people to cast votes in record numbers as polling began in the morning for the first phase of assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam.
In separate tweets to voters in Assam and Bengal, PM urged those eligible to vote in record numbers in Assam, particularly young people. For voters in Bengal, PM said, people should exercise their franchise in record numbers.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also called on voters to exercise their right to vote as the state goes to polls in the first phase of assembly elections in 30 seats where over 191 candidates in fray. 
The BJP hopes to retain power in Assam and defeat the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. Assam and Bengal will have three-phase and eight-phase elections. The counting of votes will be on May 2.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday filed his nomination from Majuli as the BJP candidate for the second consecutive term for the assembly polls. The chief minister filed his papers on the last day of submitting nominations.&nbsp;Before filing his nomination papers, he addressed a huge rally and sought the blessings of the people to return him and the party to power so that they continue to "serve the state and ensure further development initiated under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi".&nbsp;Sonowal said that during the last five years, the state has witnessed unprecedented development.

Assam polls: meet underway at Amit Shah's residence to finalise seat-sharing

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his Cabinet colleague Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived at the residence of Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday to finalise seat-sharing pact ahead of the the Assam assembly polls. The BJP and its two Assam allies, the AGP and the UPPL are expected to finalise by today the number of seats to be contested by each party. While the AGP, which won 14 constituencies in the 2016 assembly elections, may get around 22 seats to contest, the UPPL, which is a new partner of the BJP and does not have any MLA now, is expected to get around 12 seats to contest, news agency PTI reported quoting sources. After the joint meeting, the BJP leaders are expected to meet separately at the residence of Nadda to scrutinise the list of candidates for the polls in Assam.&nbsp;
