Of the 39 seats, the BJP alone won 22 last time while the Asom Gana Parishad got two. The Bodoland People's Front, a former BJP ally, had won four. This time, though, the BPF is part of the Congress-led Mahajoth. This time, there is a direct contest between the NDA and the Grand Alliance in 25 constituencies, while the rest are witnessing triangular fights.&nbsp;Phase-I saw 79 per cent turnout.&nbsp;All eyes are on the highly polarised Barak Valley region. Up to 15 seats in this Bengali heartland will witness key contests.

Reports also add that an initial list of 84 BJP candidates has been finalised, and more details on seats and names of candidates are likely to be announced on Friday. Assam will vote in three phases - March 27, April 1 and April 6 - with results due on May 2.

Singer Kalpana Patowary Joins AGP

Popular Bhojpuri singer from Assam Kalpana Patowary joined Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Friday. She said that she would play an active role in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections next year but refrained from commenting on if she would vie for a ticket to contest the polls. &ldquo;We do not know what is going to happen in the next five minutes. So I would not like to talk much about the future. The party has many senior leaders, they are experienced than I am in the field of politics, will do as asked by them&rdquo;, Patowary told reporters after the joining. AGP President and Assam Agriculture Minister Arul Bora, Vice President of the party and Assam Minister for Water Resources Keshab Chandra Mahanta and party&rsquo;s senior leader and Assam Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury and other senior party leaders were present. The event was at the AGP headquarters in Ambari, Guwahati. Potwary is a folk singer who has sung songs in different languages.
