Asian stocks saw modest gains on Tuesday, navigating a subdued holiday trading week as investors digested the implications of elevated U.S. Treasury yields and fewer anticipated Federal Reserve rate cuts in 2025. The dollar remained near a two-year high, maintaining pressure on commodities and emerging markets.
Regional Market Highlights
The MSCI Asia-Pacific ex-Japan index climbed 0.35%, tracking Wall Street&rsquo;s overnight rise. However, Japan&rsquo;s Nikkei dipped 0.37%, while the Topix inched down 0.03%.
In China, the CSI300 index rose 0.5%, and the Shanghai Composite added 0.47%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index led gains with a 0.7% jump.
Despite gains, investor sentiment toward China remains cautious due to a sluggish economic recovery and persistent real estate woes. Ronald Temple, Chief Market Strategist at Lazard, warned of potential growth hurdles, citing the ongoing property crisis and possible trade tensions with the U.S.
Corporate Developments in Focus
Japan: Nippon Steel&rsquo;s bid for U.S. Steel faced delays as the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) cited unresolved national security concerns.
Meanwhile, Honda's shares soared nearly 17%, while Nissan&rsquo;s eased 0.07%, as both companies confirmed merger talks, signalling a strategic pivot in response to rising competition from Chinese EV makers.
Currencies: The dollar index held firm at 108.11, driven by robust U.S. Treasury yields, with the two-year yield at 4.33% and the 10-year at 4.58%.
The yen weakened to a five-month low at 157.11 per dollar, prompting Japan&rsquo;s Finance Minister to reaffirm Tokyo's readiness to intervene against excessive currency fluctuations.
Global Economic Context
Markets are now pricing 35 basis points of U.S. rate cuts for 2025, significantly below previous expectations. Analysts at Citi Wealth noted that the Fed&rsquo;s outlook would be shaped by U.S. labour market trends and policies on tariffs and immigration.
U.S. consumer confidence dipped unexpectedly in December, reflecting post-election uncertainty.
Meanwhile, global central banks urged caution ahead of President-elect Donald Trump&rsquo;s January inauguration, citing potential economic policy shifts involving tariffs, taxes, and immigration.
Commodities and Oil
The dollar&rsquo;s strength and high bond yields weighed on gold, which held at $2,615.59 per ounce after a 1% drop last week. Brent crude futures rose 0.37% to $72.90 per barrel, while U.S. crude gained 0.35%, reaching $69.48.

First up, a quick look at the Asian Markets &ndash; Asian equities extended gains following positive cues from Wall Street, with US markets snapping their three-day losing streak on Tuesday. While Korea&rsquo;s Kospi gained almost two percent, Japan&rsquo;s Nikkei was up over a percent. Chinese equities also ended in the green even as data showed that the country&rsquo;s exports in July missed estimates and imports grew faster than expected. Back home, Indian equities reflected the global sentiment. The Sensex and the Nifty gained over a percent each, with the Sensex ending the day around 79,500. The Nifty closed around 24,300, with 44 out of the fifty stocks on the index advancing in today&rsquo;s trade. Upstream oil major ONGC was the star of the trade, rising almost eight percent. IndusInd Bank was the key laggard. In some relief for homebuyers, the central government has moved to amend the budget provisions regarding long-term capital gains taxation on realty. This will result in two tax options for those who bought their houses before July 23rd this year &ndash; option one, 12.5 percent LTCG tax with no indexation, and option two, 20 percent tax with indexation. This relief will not be extended to those who have bought houses on or after July 23rd. In the auto sector &ndash; Tata Motors, which has taken the pole position in electric vehicle sales, has launched the Tata Curvv EV. The car, introduced at a starting price of 17.5 lakh rupees, promises a range of 150 kilometres with just 15 minutes of charging. The company also claims a total range of 585 kilometres for the car, with an expected real-world range of up to 425 kilometres. On to the latest from the corporate space - Reliance Industries&rsquo; Chairman Mukesh Ambani has said that the conglomerate has consolidated its balance sheet after the previous round of capex and is ready for the next level of growth. In its latest annual report, RIL CMD also outlined the company&rsquo;s roadmap to meet net zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2035, and the plans to roll out the True5G telecom network and expand retail. He also reiterated that in the world of volatility and uncertainty, India is shining as a beacon of stability and prosperity. And now, here&rsquo;s one piece of news for those of you who are brand-conscious &ndash; India is emerging as a hub for global lifestyle brands. A study by global consultancy firm Bain &amp; Company in collaboration with Myntra shows 90 percent of the top 50 global brands are already active in India, with half of them clocking over 30 million dollars in annual revenue. The study further reveals that the online channel is the top choice for global brands making a foray into the Indian market.

Simultaneously, domestic institutions bolster the market with their highest investment since 2020, marking a significant surge in confidence amidst global uncertainties.

India has emerged as the frontrunner in attracting foreign investment among Asian markets, boasting the highest foreign funds flow in March. Despite geopolitical tensions and concerns regarding prolonged high-interest rates, India has managed to defy the odds, securing significant investments from Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs).
According to recent data, FIIs injected a substantial $3.63 billion into Indian equities, marking their most significant buying spree since December 2023. Simultaneously, domestic institutions displayed robust confidence in the Indian market, becoming net buyers and infusing approximately Rs 52,467 crore, marking a four-year high since March 2020.
While India enjoyed the lion's share of foreign investments, other Asian nations such as South Korea, Taiwan, and Indonesia also experienced notable FII inflows. Conversely, countries like Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka witnessed outflows of foreign capital.
Among the beneficiaries, South Korea secured inflows of $2.91 billion, followed by Taiwan with $1.14 billion and Indonesia with $585 million. In contrast, Japan encountered the most substantial FII outflow of $5.35 billion, trailed by Thailand and Malaysia at $1.13 billion and $514 million, respectively. Vietnam witnessed an outflow of $197 million, while the Philippines experienced an outflow of $40 million.
India's ability to attract significant foreign investments amidst global uncertainties underscores its resilience and attractiveness as an investment destination. Despite external challenges, the Indian market has remained robust, drawing the confidence of both foreign and domestic investors alike.
