Ahead of the quadrennial Asian Games, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has reportedly sacked the entire coaching staff of the men's hockey team following a poor show in the recently concluded Asian Champions Trophy (ACT).&nbsp; Pakistan failed to make it to the final four at the continental hockey event, which was eventually won by India.&nbsp; Shahnaz Sheikh has been named the new head coach but the move has courted controversy as Sheikh was part of the committee that sacked the coaching staff.&nbsp; Originally, Sheikh was also named a consultant for the hockey team and was to travel to India for Asian Champions Trophy, however, the PHF reportedly could not obtain a visa for him in time.&nbsp; Irked by PHF's inability to get him a visa and Pakistan's exit in the round robin league, Sheikh and other former Olympians Akhtar Rasool and Islahuddin Siddiqui, supported the Pakistan Sports Board's (PSB) decision to dissolve the PHF. Now, Sheikh's appointment has puzzled the sports fraternity as the PHF was dissolved by the PSB so it remains unclear who is authorised to make decisions concerning the men's hockey team.&nbsp; (with PTI inputs)

A spirited India eked out a fighting 4-3 win over Malaysia in the final to clinch the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament for the fourth time here on Saturday.
Malaysia were aggressive in the first half as the Indians found it difficult to restrict their opponent.
India converted the first PC in the ninth minute, Jugraj scoring with a fierce flick to the right of the Malaysian goalie.
The Indians got into their groove as the match progressed and played full-press hockey after the sluggish start.
But Malaysia didn't sit back and continued to test the Indian defence. Their efforts bore fruit in the 14th minute when Abu Kamal Azari found the back of the net after being fed by Azuan Hasan from the right flank.
Seconds from the first quarter, India secured back-to-back penalty corners but wasted both the chances.
Malaysia kept up their tempo in the second quarter and earned consecutive penalty corners in the 18th minute, the second of which was converted by Razie Rahim as the ball went in after getting a deflection from rusher Amit Rohidas' stick.
Malaysia secured a penalty corner for an unnecessary stick check by Jugraj in the 23rd minute but the effort went wide.
Malaysia got another penalty corner in the 28th minute and this time Muhamad Aminudin made no mistake to hand his side a 3-1 lead at half-time.
Malaysia earned another penalty corner in the 43rd minute but India defended stoutly.

While India skipper Harmanpreet Singh scored from a penalty stroke in the 45th minute, seconds later Gurjant Singh found the back of the net from field play to make the scoreline 3-3.

India kept up the pressure and earned another penalty corner soon, but Harmanpreet's effort went wide.

A dominant India mauled reigning Asian champions Japan 5-0 to enter their fourth Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament final at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Friday.
While three-time champions India adopted a high-press hockey from the onset, Japan played deep into their defence to thwart the home team's attacks.
India got the first scoring chance of the match in the form of a penalty corner but Japan goalkeeper Takashi Yoshikawa made a confident save to deny home team skipper Harmanpreet Singh.
The Indians set pace of the game and enjoyed bulk of the possession, while Japan played catch-up hockey.
After a barren first quarter, India finally took the lead in the 19th minute through Akashdeep Singh, who slapped the ball in from a rebound after Hardik Singh's initial shot was saved by Japan's second goalkeeper Takumi Kitagawa.
India kept up the tempo and earned their second penalty corner in the 23rd minute and India skipper Harmanpreet sounded the board with a fierce low flick to the left of Japanese goalie to double India's lead.
Just at the stroke of half-time, India tripled their lead through Mandeep Singh.
It was Manpreet Singh who was instrumental in getting the third goal as he intercepted the ball in the midfield and then beat three Japanese defenders to set it up for Mandeep, who just had to direct the ball in.
The trend continued after the change of ends as India continued to press hard on the Japanese goal.
Sumit probably scored the goal of the tournament with a back stick flick into the net from a tight angle after being brilliantly set up by Manpreet's hardwork from the right flank.
Young Karthi Selvam made it 5-0 in India's favour in the 51st minute after being fed by an unselfish Sukhjeet Singh, who received a perfect ariel ball from Harmanpreet.
India will take on Malaysia in the final on Saturday, while Japan will be up against defending champions South Korea in the third-fourth place play-off match.

In the match itself, Malaysia secured a 3-1 triumph over Japan, courtesy of goals scored by Najmi Jazlan (13th minute, penalty corner), Ashran Hamsani (37th), and Shello Silverius (59th), which paved their way into the semi-finals. The semifinal qualification is determined by the top four teams out of the six participating after the round-robin league. Malaysia's victory propelled them to nine points, achieved through three wins and one loss.
Despite their loss, Japan managed to find the back of the net through Niwa Takuma (59th), but it was in a losing effort. Their final league match will be against China on Wednesday. Notably, Japan has secured draws against both India and Pakistan in the Asian Champions Trophy.

Continuing their commanding run in the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament, India clinched a tense 3-2 victory over South Korea in their fourth round-robin encounter.
Having amassed 10 points from a blend of three triumphs and a draw, India stand atop the league table. Their semifinal berth was already secured prior to this match. The initial spark came from Nilakanta Sharma, who netted a goal in the sixth minute. The situation aligned perfectly as Sukhjeet transferred the ball to Sumit Shamsher Singh, who, after elegantly evading two defenders, set the stage for Sharma to find the net.
However, India's euphoria was short-lived, as the Korean team responded with an equalizer merely six minutes later. Kim Sunghyun's adept play found the ball behind India's goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak, who was celebrating his 100th international appearance. The goal's setup was credited to Manjae Jung.
Nevertheless, India managed to regain their advantage when Harmanpreet Singh capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity in the 23rd minute. Singh's well-aimed shot towards the right of the goalkeeper ignited the cheers of the spectators present at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium.
In the 33rd minute, Mandeep Singh further solidified India's position, extending their lead to 3-1 in the match.
Korea's Yang Jihun managed to narrow the gap, securing a goal in the 58th minute, but India adeptly held onto their lead during the final two minutes.

India began the first quarter on an attacking note, coming close to penetrating the Malaysian box and creating some very clear scoring chances.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's Fitri Saari was green-carded for a harsh interception in the eighth minute.
With the first quarter coming to a close, Harmanpreet ran towards the Malaysian box unmarked and passed the ball inside to Selvam, who comfortably tapped it in to give the hosts the lead.
At the start of the subsequent quarter, India's Vivek Sagar saw a green card. However, India continued to come up with relentless attacks, including a couple of penalty corners.
The Men in Blue came close again on two instances before the break but failed to make the most of the chances, as the Malaysians displayed some rigid defensive skills to keep it 1-0 at halftime.
Following the restart, it did not take long for the Indians to extend their lead.
Just a couple of minutes into the third quarter, it was a penalty corner that midfielder Hardik successfully converted off a rebound after the initial flick from Harmanpreet was parried away by the goalie.
Malaysia too earned a penalty corner thereafter in the quarter that was successfully converted by Najmi Jazlan. However, the Indians appealed for a video referral and the goal was overturned on the grounds of a dangerous flick, turning the silence of the crowd into cheers.
While Nilakanta Sharma and Prasad were yellow-carded in 33rd and 37th minutes, in the 42nd, India received three consecutive penalties, and the third one was converted by Hardik.
As the action entered the final quarter, both teams upped their ante, but it was India that was dominating possession.
After a couple of corner chances, Gurjant shot in the fourth for the Indians in the 53rd minute, thanks to Hardik's assist for Mandeep Singh, as the latter's shot was deflected for Gurjant to complete the formality.
Despite putting in four, the Men in Blue refused to slow down, as a minute later, Jugraj successfully converted yet another penalty corner to extend their lead.
As the match approached its closing stages, India continued to play with intensity.
India will next be up against defending champions South Korea on Monday, while Malaysia take on Japan

Rehan Butt, the former star centre forward and current assistant coach of the Pakistan team, fondly recalls the days when facing India in their home turf felt like "playing a home game." With bilateral sporting ties between the two nations on hold due to cross-border tensions, Butt is excited that the current generation of players will get a chance to showcase their skills in Chennai at the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy.
"I have played all around the world, but there is no place that can match the fun and thrill of playing in India - it would feel as if we were playing in Pakistan. I have always received a lot of love here and made some friends," Butt, famous for his twin goals against India in the dying moments of Pakistan's Champions Trophy clash in 2002, shared in an exclusive interview.
Overwhelmed by the appreciation and warmth they received in India, Butt believes that the two countries should resume bilateral hockey ties as soon as possible. The much-anticipated match between India and Pakistan is scheduled for August 9, and the tickets have already been sold out.
"There is a lot of following for this game, and it is time the bilateral hockey relations resumed between the two nations. From sponsors to broadcasters to players, everyone will benefit from it," said Butt, who represented Pakistan in 274 international matches.
Pakistan has sent a young side for the Asian Champions Trophy, focusing on preparing for the Asian Games in September. "Since we have a young side facing world No. 4 India, pressure will, of course, be on the players," Butt acknowledged. However, even the hosts cannot escape the pressure associated with a match against Pakistan.
While both teams will feel the heat, Butt backed India to be a strong medal contender in the Paris Olympics next year. "India is No. 4 in the world. If they continue to play similarly, they will be strong contenders for a medal in the Paris Olympics. India should not face any difficulty making it to the final of ACT on August 12. We would also want to gift the fans a title clash between India and Pakistan," Butt concluded, looking forward to an exciting and competitive tournament.

The highly-anticipated match between arch-rivals India and Pakistan will take place on August 9.
The Pakistan team is flying into Chennai later tonight after entering Amritsar by road.
Meanwhile, the Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian team too landed in the city on Tuesday morning.
The Indian team is scheduled to train at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium at Egmore, the venue for the tournament, on Wednesday before its opening match against China on Thursday.
Pakistan, too, will train on the same day.
The Asian Hockey Champions Trophy was first started as a women's teams competition in 2010.
After the success of the women's Asian Champions Trophy, the men's competition was held in 2011 with six top teams in the continent.
Till 2013, the ACT was an annual affair. However, from 2016 onwards, the tournament was staged every two years.
The 2020 edition was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
India and Pakistan have won the tournament thrice, sharing the trophy in 2018.
South Korea are the defending champions having beaten Japan in the final of the last edition in 2021.
