Custodians of the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort have reportedly been served notices by the Uttar Pradesh government for pending payment of property tax and water bills.

The news report quoted ASI officials as saying that this is the first time such notices have been served as property taxes are not applicable on monuments. Also, there are no water connections for commercial use, and the lawns are maintained for public service, the ASI said.
The Archaeological Survey reportedly said that it was a mistake that should be remedied soon.

Amid the controversy over the new national emblem sculpture that has been installed on top of the new under-construction Parliament building, a senior archaeologist has dismissed accusations that there is a change in the expression of the Ashoka lions as an issue of perspective. 
Dr Budha Rashmi Mani, former Director General of the National Museum and former Additional Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India, has said that the original sculpture, referred to as Lion Capital of Sarnath, is 7-8 feet in height while the new one is 21 feet and therefore there is bound to be a difference. He added that when an installation that tall is from the ground it may seem that there are some distortions. 
He also said that from the images that he has seen the new national emblem installation appears to be a good copy of the original Sarnath emblem. 
The Opposition has accused the Modi-led central govt of making changes to the national emblem and said that the Ashoka lions in the new installation appear to be agressive while the Sarnath ones bear a gentle expression.

Responding to a plea to revive the temple at the Qutub Minar complex in Delhi, The Archaeological Survey of India has told a local court that the monument has been a protected monument since 1914 and its structure cannot be changed now.  The ASI in its report said the revival of worship cannot be allowed at a monument where such a practice was not prevalent at the time of it being granted the "protected" status.  A controversy erupted after ASI’s ex-regional director Dharamveer Sharma claimed that the Qutb Minar was constructed by Raja Vikramaditya and not by Qutb al-Din Aibak, to study the direction of the sun. The Ministry of Culture had also asked the ASI to submit its excavation report.   The ASI said the plea by the Hindu petitioners is legally not maintainable. It said the destruction of old temples to build the Qutb Minar complex is a matter of historical fact and the Qutb Minar complex is a living monument that has been protected since 1914. The ASI maintained that no one has the right to worship on the complex. Activists from the Mahakal Manav Sewa and other right-wing outfits were seen staging a protest, holding placards and raising slogans, amid heavy police deployment at the Qutb Minar, which is recognised as a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

Here's the caption which accompanied the photos in the ASI newsletter - "The work of maintenance of underground cells on the river side was taken up. Decayed and disintegrated lime plaster was removed and replaced by laying of lime plaster and traditional lime processing before application."
After the latest controversy erupted, Ebba Koch, a Mughal architecture historian had told the BBC that the locked rooms were chambers on the riverfront meant to be a cool recreational place in the summers.
Another historian, Rana Safvi, had claimed that the rooms were closed for public after a flood in 1978.

The storm around one of India's most famous monuments is intensifying. Days after a petition on the Taj Mahal was filed in the Allahabad High Court, a BJP MP has made a big claim.
Diya Kumari said that the land on which the Taj Mahal is built was originally owned by the erstwhile Jaipur royal family. She claimed that Shah Jahan had acquired the land in exchange for some compensation, but the Jaipur royals couldn't challenge the Mughal emperor's decision.
Kumari said, "It's good that someone has raised their voice and filed a petition. If documents are needed in the proceedings, we can provide them if the court orders."
When asked whether the Taj Mahal should be demolished, she said, "I wouldn't say that. But there should be an inquiry regarding the parts of Taj Mahal which are sealed. They should be opened to check what's there."
On May 4, another BJP leader Rajneesh Singh, had filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court. The petition sought instructions to the Archaeological Survey of India, or ASI, to open 20 locked rooms in the Taj Mahal.
The petition said that there is speculation that the locked rooms house idols of Hindu gods, and Hindu scriptures.

The attack occurred in Kakapora in Pulwama district. The victims were near a tea stall when a terrorist approached them on foot. The attacker appears to have caught them by surprise, quickly shooting them, and then fleeing.
The incident was caught on CCTV. Head Constable Surinder Singh was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. ASI Devraj suffered injuries.
This was reportedly the ninth terror attack in April so far. There has been a spate of attacks on security personnel and civilians in Jammu and Kashmir in recent weeks.

The Qutub Minar complex is home to many Hindu and Jain idols. 'Ulta Ganesh' and 'Ganesh in cage', two such idols, were the subject of a letter sent by the National Monuments Authority (NMA) to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The letter says the idols should be given a 'respectable' place at the NMA as the Authority’s chairman says the current 'placement of the idols is disrespectful'.
According to NMA chief and BJP leader, Tarun Vijay, the placement of the idols is near the feet of the mosque visitors. Vijay also said that after Independence, statues of British rulers were removed from prominent places and names of roads changed to remove traces of colonial past. The same should be done for the Mughal cultural genocide by righting the wrongs.
The idols were allegedly taken after demolishing 27 Jain and Hindu temples built by Anangpal Toman. 
In December 2021, a Delhi court had rejected a petition seeing the restoration of Hindu and Jain deities and the right to worship within the Qutub Minar complex. The judgement was appealed and will now be heard on May 11.
