Ashraf Ghani, the former Afghanistan President who fled the country when the Taliban seized power in Kabul, was &ldquo;a total fraud&rdquo; solely focused on his own desire to stay in power and a big hurdle in any peace talks, former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has alleged.
In his book titled 'Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love,' Pompeo claims that both Ghani and Afghanistan's former chief executive Abdullah Abdullah were involved in corruption at the highest levels that limited the US&rsquo; ability to successfully exit the war-torn country in August 2021.
The United States completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 31, ending its 20-year-old military presence in the war-torn country.
&ldquo;As negotiations accelerated, Ghani was always a problem. I met scores of world leaders, and he was my least favourite. That&rsquo;s saying a lot when you have Kim (Jong-un), Xi (Jinping), and (Vladimir) Putin in the mix. Yet Ghani was a total fraud who had wasted American lives and was focused solely on his own desire to stay in power,&rdquo; Pompeo writes in his book that hit the bookstores last week.
&ldquo;Never once did I sense that he was prepared to take a risk for his country that might imperil his power. This disgusted me,&rdquo; he writes in the book that gives a detailed account of the negotiations the previous US administration led by ex-President Donald Trump had with the hardline Taliban militants.
The Trump administration had appointed former diplomat Zalmay Khalilzad as the special envoy for talks with the Taliban.
Pompeo claims that Ghani won his reelection mainly because of massive electoral fraud.

Ghani's statement came a day after the Taliban announced an interim government. The cabinet is led by Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, who is on a UN blacklist. Another figure, Sirajuddin Haqqani, head of the dreaded Haqqani Network, is wanted by the FBI.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the Sunni Islamist group was in talks with the government for a peaceful surrender of Kabul. Taliban had also reportedly said it has been agreed that Ghani will resign after a political agreement and hand the power to a transitional government.
Earlier in the day, acting defense minister Bismillah Mohammadi had declared that the president has handed the authority of solving the crisis in the country to political leaders.

Pakistan has suggested a meeting between Afghan government leadership and the Islamist&nbsp;group to negotiate a power sharing settlement largely in favour of the latter.

The earlier attempt brokered by Pakistan to hold a meeting between President Ashraf Ghani and Taliban leaders between July 17-19 failed as the Sunni Islamist leaders said they did not want to talk to the current head of Afghan government.
With Taliban not willing to negotiate with President Ashraf Ghani, name of Prince Mirwais Khan is being floated around as a possible interlocutor for the Afghan government.
The settlement conditions for peace forwarded by the Sunni group to Kabul are very steep. The Taliban has reportedly has put forward three conditions to Afghanistan government for peace negotiations.
It has demanded that all Taliban prisoners in Afghan jails should be unconditionally freed, that the government should get Taliban delisted as a terrorist group by the UN. Also, it has proposed that President, Defence Minister, Interior Minister, Army Chief and NDS (spy agency) Chief should be from the insurgent group.

Amid reports of his resignation, Afghan President Ashraf&nbsp;Ghani on Saturday assured his countrymen that he will prevent further instability in the country and as the president his focus&nbsp;will be to prevent violence and displacement of people.&nbsp;
He said that the&nbsp;remobilization of the armed forces was also a "top priority", as Taliban fighters inched closer to the capital after routing the country's defences over the past week.
According to reports, the Taliban have captured much of northern, western and southern Afghanistan, and are now battling government forces just 11 kilometers south of the capital, Kabul.
In a recorded message, President Ghani&nbsp;said that his govt&nbsp;has begun extensive consultations at home and abroad and that the results will be shared with the public soon.&nbsp;

The Taliban broke into the Kandahar central jail and released hundreds of incarcerated prisoners on Wednesday. 
Afghan media outlets quoted Taliban spokesperson Qari Yousaf Ahmadi to confirm that the group had managed to "conquer" the Kandahar jail, after a long siege, following which the personnel surrendered and all the prisoners were released.
The Afghan government had relocated more than 3,000 Taliban fighters from the Kandahar jail in recent weeks, but the prison complex still housed hundreds of prisoners, including Taliban fighters, at the time it was taken over on Wednesday.
In a rapidly escalating situation, the Taliban have taken control of at least nine provincial capitals in Afghanistan, as part of its offensive against President Ashraf Ghani's administration.

The Taliban seized two more Afghan cities on Tuesday, as tens of thousands of people fled their homes in the north for the safety of the capital. Reports say the Taliban have now taken more than a quarter of Afghanistan's provincial capitals in less than a week, with most of them in the northen part of the country.
Hardline forces won control of Farah city, and Pul-e-Khumri in Baghlan, within hours of each other on Tuesday. The Taliban has also captured Faizabad, making it the ninth city to be overrun since Friday.
With the insurgents now setting their sights on Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani flew to the city to rally his beleaguered forces on Wednesday.
But despite the bloodshed over the past few days, US President Joe Biden is not planning to delay his deadline to withdraw all American troops by August 31. Instead, he urged Afghan leaders to &ldquo;come together" and &ldquo;fight for themselves."
"Afghan leaders have to come together. We lost thousands, lost (to) death and injury, thousands of American personnel. They've got to fight for themselves, fight for their nation," said the US President.
The fall of Mazar-i-Sharif would signal the total collapse of government control in the traditionally anti-Taliban north. Afghan govt forces are also battling the hardliners in Kandahar and Helmand, the two southern Pashto-speaking provinces from where the Taliban draw their strength. 
Meanwhile, Washington&rsquo;s special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad is in Qatar to try and convince the Taliban to accept a ceasefire.
