Australia skipper Pat Cummins was on Friday ruled out of the second Ashes Test as the hosts named an unchanged 14-member squad for the day and night game in Brisbane.
In Cummins' absence, stand-in skipper Steve Smith led Australia to an eight-wicket victory in the first Test as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The second Test is slated from December 4.
Cummins, however, will travel to Brisbane to continue his return as he's likely to be back for the third Test in Adelaide from December 17. The Australian pace spearhead was seen in a rigorous training session at the SCG on Friday, bowling to Smith.
With Cummins ruled out, Brendan Doggett, who bagged five wickets in Perth, is likely to share paced duties with Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland. Josh Hazlewood, who is also nursing an injury (hamstring), has already been ruled out.
Left-handed opener Usman Khawaja, who suffered back spasms in the opening Test, retains his place in the squad, but he will need to prove his fitness before the second Test.
All-rounder Beau Webster and back-up batter Josh Inglis are the other options if Khawaja misses out.

A venomous Mitchell Starc took 7-58 as England were sent packing for just 172 on day one of the first Ashes Test against Australia on Friday, leaving them with a mountain to climb.
Batting after captain Ben Stokes won the toss on a fine day at a packed Perth Stadium, the visitors had few answers to the 35-year-old wreaking ball.
His haul came off 12.5 overs with debutant Brendan Doggett chipping in with 2-27.
Harry Brook (52) and Ollie Pope (46) offered the only resistance as England crumbled after lunch.
Starc bagged three wickets in an intimidating opening spell, including Joe Root for a duck, before returning to send Stokes packing in his first over after the break, then mopping up.
All five previous Tests at the venue have been won by the side batting first, but England did their best to challenge that.
They got off to a horror start, rocked in the opening over after Starc was handed the new ball in his 101st Test.
The veteran strike weapon delivered as he has so many times before, enticing a thick edge from Zak Crawley that Usman Khawaja did well to collect down low at slip, the opener gone for nought.
Starc has now taken a wicket in the first over of an innings 24 times.
At the other end Ben Duckett settled his nerves with a textbook drive off Scott Boland to bank the first four of the series and followed it up with another in the same over.
But just as the left-hander was getting going, Starc pounced again, trapping him lbw for 21 to leave England tottering on 33-2.
That brought Root to the crease in his latest campaign for an elusive first century in Australia.
But he only lasted seven balls, edging a seaming delivery into the safe hands of Marnus Labuschagne at third slip.
Pope survived the furnace and was composed before Cameron Green was brought into the attack and he was out lbw, leaving them on 105-4 at lunch.
Brook hit Boland for a six in the first over after the break before Starc again worked his magic, taking out Stokes's stumps with an inswinger when the captain was on six.
A fearless Brook was unperturbed and raced to his 14th Test half-century, off 58 balls, before feathering a short ball to Alex Carey, earning Doggett his maiden Test wicket on debut.
Starc then removed Gus Atkinson (one) with Steve Smith collecting at slip to give him the 17th five-wicket haul of his career.
Doggett and Starc ruthlessly wrapped up the tail with little resistance.
England, who have not won a series in Australia for 15 years, opted for an all-pace attack with spinner Shoaib Bashir missing out.

Starc took three wickets for 10 in his first five overs and brought up his 100th career Ashes wicket. It started in the first over, when the veteran left-arm paceman had Zac Crawley caught at slip by Usman Khawaja on the sixth delivery before England had scored a run.
Starc bowled 12 balls without conceding a run before Ollie Pope took three off him to start the fifth over. Ben Duckett (21) was punishing an off-rhythm Scott Boland's half-volleys, punching four boundaries down the ground before Starc trapped him lbw in the seventh over with a full-length ball that hit him in the pads in front of leg stump. Duckett reviewed the decision but tracking technology confirmed the umpire's decision and England was 33-2.
Joe Root, the No. 1-ranked test batter but still searching for his first Ashes century in Australia, faced seven balls before he nicked Starc to Marnus Labuschagne at third slip for a duck and England slumped to 39-3.
The key dismissal gave 35-year-old Starc his 100th Ashes wicket, at an average of 26.65, and gave Australia the ascendancy after losing the toss and being forced to bowl.
A 55-run stand between Pope and Harry Brook gave England some momentum before allrounder Green struck at the end of his first over of bowling in a test match since 2023. Green trapped Pope lbw and again England reviewed the decision, which was upheld by the TV umpire using tracking technology.
The visitors were reeling at 94-4, bringing Ben Stokes to the crease before lunch on Day 1 of the series. Stokes was unbeaten on 4 and Brook was unbeaten on 28 at the first interval.
England's attacking intent is regulation &ldquo;Bazball&rdquo; under Brendon McCullum's coaching. The team batting first has won all five tests played at Perth Stadium &mdash; which replaced the WACA as the Western Australian capital's test venue &mdash; and that was a heavy factor in Stokes deciding to bat after winning the toss, going against his preferred option of bowling first and chasing.
The English, trying to win a test in Australia for the first time since 2010-11, opted for an all-pace attack led by Jofra Archer and 35-year-old Mark Wood.
Australia has won 13 and drawn two of its last 15 Ashes tests in Australia. Regular skipper Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are missing the first test because of injuries, opening the way for Brendan Doggett to make his test debut and become the third Indigenous Australian man to play test cricket.
Doggett bowled alongside Scott Boland, making it the first time two Indigenous Australians have played in the same test lineup. He troubled Pope in his first over and had figures of 0-17 in his first spell in test cricket.

The build-up to the Ashes series starting Friday began at the end of July 2023 following one of the more acrimonious test cricket series between England and Australia.&nbsp;
Ben Stokes and his England lineup won that test at The Oval in South London but it wasn't enough to reclaim the Ashes from the Aussies, who won the first two tests and drew the fourth in a five-match series to retain the old urn.
Cue to Perth Stadium, Day 1 of a possible 25 spanning seven weeks and five cities. There are some big questions in play.
Can an aging, understrength Australia continue an unbeaten run in home Ashes tests that dates to the 2010-11 series? Can Stokes inspire an end to that long drought for England? Can Joe Root, the world's No. 1-ranked test batter, finally post an Ashes century in Australia?
The English
Stokes knows the record: 13 losses, two draws and no wins in England's last 15 tests Down Under. He's thinking more about the 2010-11 squad that beat the Australians 3-1.
&ldquo;I've come here absolutely desperate to get home on that plane in January as one of the lucky few captains from England who have come here and been successful,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;A lot has been spoken of about the history and how it has gone for England &mdash; this is our chance to create our own.&rdquo;
In a bid to break the drought, England is likely to start a pair of express pace bowlers in conditions expected to suit them. Jofra Archer is primed to do well in Australia and 35-year-old Mark Wood recovered from a minor hamstring strain to be including in the 12-man match squad for the first test.
&ldquo;He's flying,&rdquo; Stokes said of Wood, who took 17 wickets in the last Ashes series in Australia. &ldquo;He's had all his injury troubles and all that kind of stuff ... but he's been bowling for a long, long time. &ldquo;He has always been someone who can just hit the ground running in a game. And he's bowling rapid, which is good.&rdquo;
The Aussies

The remaining half &mdash; left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc and offspinner Nathan Lyon &mdash; are confident that the team can win on what is expected to be a fast, bouncy pitch in Perth.
Brendan Doggett is set to make his test debut alongside fellow fast bowler Scott Boland, making it the first time the men's test XI will contain two players with Australian Indigenous heritage. &ldquo;Good to see the depth in the squad,&rdquo; Starc said. &ldquo;We know what Scotty Boland can do, ... (and) Doggie's' coming off a hot streak at the moment.&rdquo;
Cameron Green's fitness to bowl means he'll fill the allrounder spot and Australia can give opening batter Jake Weatherald a test debut at the age of 31. The flow-on means Marnus Labuschagne will return at No. 3, with stand-in skipper Steve Smith at No. 4 and allrounder Beau Webster has been cut from the lineup.
&ldquo;Beau came into international cricket and lit it up immediately, so I think it's a really tough one on him," Smith said. "He's the one that misses out unfortunately. &ldquo;But I think with Marnus, when he's batting at his best at No. 3, it makes us a very, very good cricket side."
Smith's role
The 36-year-old Smith will lead Australia for the third time this year and the seventh time since his era as full-time captain ended with the Sandpapergate scandal in 2018. He filled in as skipper the last time England toured Australia in 2021-22, after Cummins was forced to isolate for the Adelaide test during the COVID-19 pandemic.
&ldquo;He's a lot more relaxed as a person all round," Starc said of his longtime teammate. "Even the times that he's captained since, when he's had to fill in for Pat, it's a different approach. &ldquo;He's still that competitive beast, and still wants to be the best, and still will leave no stone unturned. But I think he's finding a few outlets to actually switch off from time to time ... and just not be cricket 100% of the time.&rdquo;

Australia skipper Steve Smith said Thursday it was "really exciting" to see Jake Weatherald and Brendan Doggett make their debuts in the opening Ashes Test against England, backing them to perform on the biggest stage.
The pair, both 31, will earn their baggy green caps at a sold-out Perth Stadium on Friday -- the first time Australia have chosen multiple debutants in a Test since early 2019.
Weatherald's inclusion as Usman Khawaja's sixth opening partner since David Warner retired last year means in-form Marnus Labuschagne can return to his favoured number three.
Labuschagne was dropped ahead of Australia's mid-year Test tour of the West Indies after an extended lean spell but came roaring back with five centuries in eight innings this season for Queensland.
Incumbent number three Cameron Green edged out Beau Webster as the all-rounder and will now come in at six, behind Smith at four and Travis Head at five.
"I watched him bat in the nets pretty closely the last few days and they were pretty tricky nets, fast, bouncy and a lot of seam," Smith, standing in as captain for the injured Pat Cummins, said of Weatherald.
"And you know, he's got a lot of courage. He wants to face bowlers the entire time, and the guys were charging in fast.
"I'm really excited for him. He's worked hard for a long period of time and I think he's going to complement Uzzie (Khawaja) pretty well up top."
 - 'Improved a hell of a lot' -
Doggett, an outstanding bowler in domestic cricket over recent years, will pull on an Australia shirt for the first time after Josh Hazlewood was ruled out with a hamstring strain.
Cummins is also missing as he returns to fitness from a back injury, replaced by Scott Boland.
Boland and Doggett lead the pace attack alongside Mitchell Starc, with Smith confident they will rise to the occasion.
"Injuries happen in sport, particularly in cricket with fast bowlers, they put a lot of stress through their bodies," said Smith.
"So unfortunate, obviously, that those two are out, but I think an exciting opportunity for Scotty and for Brendan Doggett.
"Brendan's been on a few tours with Australia. He is very skillful. I think he's improved a hell of a lot the last few years and I'm excited to see him go about his business."
Nathan Lyon, in his 140th Test, provides the spin option with the veteran generally thriving on home soil, where he has bagged 268 of his 562 Test wickets at an average of 31.08.
He needs two more to surpass Glenn McGrath and become the sixth-highest wicket-taker in history.
"It looks a good wicket, pretty similar to last year's one," said Smith. "I think it's going to have some decent pace and bounce in it."
England drew 2-2 at home in the most recent Ashes series, in 2023, but have not won in Australia since 2010/2011.
The visitors have named a squad of 12 for the first Test and will confirm their team at the toss.

According to the Marylebone Cricket Club, the Lord's-based custodian of the laws of the game, the term &ldquo;Ashes&rdquo; was first used in August 1882 in a satirical obituary for English cricket printed in The Sporting Times after the representative team lost on home soil to Australia for the first time.
The obituary reported that the body of English cricket would be cremated and the Ashes taken to Australia.
English captain Ivo Bligh led a team to Australia later that year with a vow to reclaim &ldquo;the ashes.&rdquo;
A fan presented Bligh with a small terracotta urn as a symbol of the Ashes after an England victory &mdash; and that's how the Ashes and the urn became intrinsically connected.
