Gujarat High Court has extended self-styled godman Asaram's temporary bail till July 7 in a 2013 rape case, citing medical grounds and pending documents.

The Gujarat High Court on Friday extended the temporary bail granted to self-styled godman Asaram till July 7 in the 2013 rape case for which he is serving a life sentence.
The division bench of Justices Ilesh Vora and Sandeep Bhatt extended Asaram's temporary bail, granted on March 28 initially for three months, during the hearing of the plea.
Asaram (86) is on bail on medical grounds.
The extension was granted so that his lawyer could submit the necessary documents in his plea, and the matter has been kept for further hearing on July 2.
Notably, the temporary bail granted by Gujarat High Court on March 28 this year is set to expire on June 30.
In his submission, Asaram's lawyer sought an extension of a few days to submit documents, claiming that after the court granted temporary bail on March 28, 10 days were wasted due to the procedure to get orders from the Jodhpur High Court, and he was released on April 7.
"So I request for two days so that if the matter is kept on Monday, I can place the document on record, and even they (respondents) can verify. Then on Monday, in any case, I have to surrender, so lordships may give me one or two days till the matter is pending," he said.
The court, in its order, stated that considering "the peculiar facts of the present case, more particularly, the process of getting the certificate from NALSA (National Legal Services Authority), which according to submission is underway, we are inclined to extend the temporary bail till July 7".
The high court on March 28 granted temporary bail for three months to Asaram as the interim bail granted to him earlier by the Supreme Court was to expire on March 31.
A division bench of the high court then delivered a split verdict, after which a third judge, to whom the matter was referred, ruled in favour of granting him three-month temporary bail.
In January 2023, a court in Gandhinagar sentenced Asaram in a rape case to life imprisonment.
Asaram is also serving a life sentence in another case of raping a minor girl at his ashram in Rajasthan in 2013.
In the present case, he was convicted for raping a woman disciple, who hailed from Surat, on several occasions from 2001 to 2006 when she was living at his ashram at Motera near Ahmedabad.
He was convicted under Indian Penal Code sections 376 2 (C) (rape), 377 (unnatural offences), 342 (wrongful detention), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 357 (assault) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

The Rajasthan High Court refused to grant interim bail to Asaram, who is currently serving a life sentence in a rape case. The court instructed his lawyer to file an affidavit addressing the alleged violation of bail conditions at the next hearing scheduled for April 7.
During the hearing, which lasted around 30 minutes, the government advocate argued against granting interim bail, claiming Asaram had violated the Supreme Court's conditions by preaching while on bail. Asaram&rsquo;s counsel, however, denied these allegations.
The court has also requested details about Asaram&rsquo;s medical treatment received during his previous interim bail and questioned the necessity for such care moving forward.
Asaram returned to Jodhpur Central Jail on April 1 at 1:30 PM after his bail period expired, only to be transferred to a private hospital later that night. No official explanation has been provided for his hospitalization.
Previously, Asaram was granted three months of interim bail by the Gujarat High Court. Despite this, he remains in custody as the Rajasthan High Court has not provided similar relief.
On Tuesday, after the reopening of the Rajasthan High Court, Asaram's lawyer, Nishant Bora, appealed for an urgent hearing of his bail application, leading to Wednesday&rsquo;s court session.
The court also requested affidavits from both Asaram and the victim concerning his bail application. The victim's lawyer opposed further bail, citing past violations of court conditions.
The case was heard by a division bench of Justice Dinesh Mehta and Justice Vineet Kumar Mathur. They specifically questioned whether Asaram had breached the Supreme Court&rsquo;s conditions by delivering sermons. Asaram&rsquo;s legal team was directed to provide an affidavit to address these accusations.
The Supreme Court initially granted interim bail on January 14, extended by the Jodhpur High Court until March 31.
Although the Gujarat High Court extended interim bail for three months concerning a case in Surat, Asaram remains incarcerated due to the pending Rajasthan case.
Asaram was convicted in two major sexual assault cases: the Jodhpur case in 2013, for raping a minor girl, and the more recent Gujarat case in Gandhinagar for repeated sexual assault, each resulting in life imprisonment.

A court in Gujarat's Gandhinagar on Monday convicted self-styled godman Asaram in a woman disciple rape case registered against him in 2013.

The court acquitted six other accused, including Asaram's wife, due to the lack of evidence.
As per the FIR lodged at Chandkheda police station in Ahmedabad, Asaram allegedly raped the woman on several occasions from 2001 to 2006 when she was living at his ashram on the outskirts of the city.
"The court has accepted the prosecution case and convicted Asaram under sections 376 2(C) (rape), 377 (unnatural offences) and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code for illegal detention, among others," special public prosecutor RC Kodekar said on Monday.
The controversial godman is currently lodged in jail in Jodhpur in another rape case.
A Surat-based woman had filed a case of rape and illegal confinement against Asaram Bapu and seven others, one of whom died during the pendency of the trial, in October 2013. A chargesheet was filed in July 2014.&nbsp;
