Roy expressed her delight at being named this year's winner amid an "incomprehensible turn" the world is taking.

Booker Prize-winning author Arundhati Roy, currently facing the threat of prosecution over historic comments on Kashmir 14 years ago, was on Thursday honoured with the prestigious Pen Pinter Prize 2024 for her &ldquo;unflinching and unswerving&rdquo; writings.
The prize, established in 2009 by the charity English PEN, defends freedom of expression and celebrates literature in memory of Nobel-Laureate playwright Harold Pinter.
Roy expressed her delight at being named this year's winner amid an &ldquo;incomprehensible turn&rdquo; the world is taking.
&ldquo;I am delighted to accept the PEN Pinter prize. I wish Harold Pinter were with us today to write about the almost incomprehensible turn the world is taking. Since he isn&rsquo;t, some of us must do our utmost to try to fill his shoes,&rdquo; said 62-year-old Roy.
The renowned author, who won the Booker Prize for her debut novel &lsquo;The God of Small Things&rsquo;, was chosen by this year&rsquo;s judges &ndash; Chair of English PEN Ruth Borthwick; actor and activist Khalid Abdalla; and writer and musician Roger Robinson. She will receive the award at a ceremony co-hosted by the British Library on October 10, where she will also deliver an address.
&ldquo;Roy tells urgent stories of injustice with wit and beauty. While India remains an important focus, she is truly an internationalist thinker, and her powerful voice is not to be silenced,&rdquo; said Borthwick.
&ldquo;Arundhati Roy is a luminous voice of freedom and justice whose words have come with fierce clarity and determination for almost 30 years now,&rdquo; said Abdalla.
&ldquo;This year, as the world faces the deep histories that have created this moment in Gaza, our need for writers who are &lsquo;unflinching and unswerving&rsquo; has been immense. In honouring Arundhati Roy this year, we are celebrating both the dignity of her body of work and the timeliness of her words, that arrive with the depth of her craft exactly when we need them most,&rdquo; he said.
Robinson added: &ldquo;Arundhati Roy was the unanimous choice for this prestigious award, a testament to her unparalleled contribution to literature.
&ldquo;Her vast body of work, encompassing both fiction and non-fiction, has not only captivated readers worldwide but also consistently focused on themes of social justice.&rdquo; The judges noted Roy&rsquo;s incisive commentary on issues ranging from environmental degradation to human rights abuses demonstrates her commitment to advocating for the marginalized and challenging the status quo.
&ldquo;Her unique voice and unwavering dedication to these causes make her a deserving recipient of this honour,&rdquo; they said.
The prize will be shared with a &ldquo;Writer of Courage&rdquo; &ndash; one who is active in defence of freedom of expression, often at great risk to their own safety and liberty. The co-winner will be selected and announced by Arundhati Roy from a shortlist of cases supported by English PEN.
The prize is awarded annually to a writer of outstanding literary merit resident in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland or the Commonwealth who, in the words of Harold Pinter&rsquo;s Nobel Prize in Literature speech, casts an &ldquo;unflinching, unswerving&rdquo; gaze upon the world and shows a &ldquo;fierce intellectual determination&hellip; to define the real truth of our lives and our societies&rdquo;.&nbsp;

The FIR was registered against Roy for allegedly making provocative speeches at an event in Delhi in 2010.&nbsp;

Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena has accorded sanction to prosecute author Arundhati Roy and a former professor in Kashmir under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for allegedly making provocative speeches at an event here in 2010, Raj Niwas officials said on Friday.
The FIR against Roy and former Central University of Kashmir professor Sheikh Showkat Hussain was registered following the orders of the Court of Metropolitan Magistrate, New Delhi, they added.
There was no immediate reaction from Roy and Hussain.
The FIR in the matter was registered on a complaint made by Sushil Pandit, a social activist from Kashmir, on October 28, 2010.
"Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena has sanctioned the prosecution of Arundhati Roy and former Professor of International Law in Central University of Kashmir, Dr. Sheikh Showkat Hussain, under section 45 (1) of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the case," a Raj Niwas official said on Friday.
Last October, the LG had granted sanction to prosecute them under section 196 of CrPC for commission of offences punishable under different sections of the Indian Penal Code: 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief).
Roy and Hussain had allegedly made provocative speeches at a conference organised under the banner of 'Azadi - The Only Way' on October 21, 2010 at LTG Auditorium, Copernicus Marg, here.
"The issues discussed and spoken about at the conference propagated the separation of Kashmir from India," said the official.
Those who delivered speeches at the conference included Syed Ali Shah Geelani, SAR Geelani (anchor of the Conference and prime accused in the Parliament attack case), Arundhati Roy, Dr. Sheikh Showkat Hussain and Varavara Rao.
The complainant filed a complaint under Section 156(3) of CrPC before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, New Delhi, who disposed the complaint on November 27, 2010 with the directions to register an FIR.
Accordingly, an FIR was registered and investigation was carried out, they said.

The Press Trust of India, quoting Raj Niwas officials said, "LG V K Saxena noted that prima facie a case is made out against Roy and Dr Hussain, former Professor, International Law, Central University of Kashmir, for commission of offence under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of Indian Penal Code for their speeches at a public function in the national capital,".&nbsp;
Under Section 196(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), a valid sanction for prosecution from the state government is a prerequisite for certain offences such as hate speech, hurting religious sentiments, hate crimes, sedition, waging war against state and promoting enmity among others.

200 signatories release statement, ask govt to free Umar Khalid

More than 200 national and international scholars, academicians and artists Thursday released a statement in support of former JNU student Umar Khalid, who is under arrest, for his alleged role in the February Delhi riots. The signatories have called the investigation a &ldquo;pre-meditated witch-hunt&rdquo; and said Khalid was falsely implicated by the Delhi Police under the UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act). The have demanded that the government &ldquo;free&rdquo; Khalid and &ldquo;all those falsely implicated and unjustly incarcerated for protesting against the CAA-NRC.&rdquo; Some prominent people among the 208 signatories include linguist Noam Chomsky, authors Salman Rushdie, Amitav Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, Ramachandra Guha and Rajmohan Gandhi, filmmakers Mira Nair and Anand Patwardhan, historians Romila Thapar and Irfan Habib, and activists Medha Patkar and Aruna Roy.
