In a shock move, Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigned ahead of the Lok Sabha elections on March 9. His exit is as sudden as was his appointment to the post.
Goel was a 1985-batch IAS officer of the Punjab cadre. He took voluntary retirement on November 18, 2022 and was appointed election commissioner just a day later.
His appointment was challenged in the Supreme Court by Association for Democratic Reforms or ADR. The apex court had questioned the Centre over the hurried appointment but the plea was later dismissed by a two-judge bench.
Born in Patiala, Goel is post-graduate with distinction in development economics from Churchill College, University of Cambridge, England and has been trained at John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, USA.
Goel's tenure as election commissioner was till December 5, 2027, and he would have become Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) after incumbent Rajiv Kumar retired in February next year.
Following the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey in February and Goel's resignation, the three-member EC has now only one member - CEC Rajiv Kumar.
Opposition parties, including Congress and TMC, have questioned Goel's sudden resignation.&nbsp;
In a post on X, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, "Election Commission or Election OMISSION? India now has only one Election Commissioner, even as Lok Sabha elections are to be announced in few days. Why?" "As I have said earlier, if we do not stop the systematic decimation of our independent institutions, our democracy shall be usurped by dictatorship!" he said.

The sudden departure of Arun Goel has left the three-member Election panel in crisis mode as it is now left with a single member.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigned from his post on March 9 with immediate effect. Goel's tenure was supposed to end in 2027, but his sudden departure has come as a shock to many as political parties who are bracing up for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
"In pursuance of clause (1) of Section 11 of The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the President is pleased to accept the resignation tendered by Arun Goel, Election Commissioner with effect from the 9th March, 2024," a notification from the Ministry of Law and Justice read.
With the exit of Goel, the three-member election panel is now down to one member Rajiv Kumar.

The top court questioned the government's "haste" and "tearing hurry" in appointing Arun Goel as Election Commissioner. The 5-judge Constitution Bench said that it was not questioning Goel's credentials, but the process adopted by the government in which his file was cleared with "lightning speed".
The court reportedly asked the government, "What kind of evaluation is this?"
In response, the government's lawyer said, "Please hold your mouth for a while. I request to look into the issue in entirety."
The judges said that Goel got voluntary retirement in one day, Law Ministry cleared his file in a single day, and got the President's assent in 24 hours.
The Supreme Court was studying the file related to Arun Goel's appointment as EC a day after the bench asked for the records. The bench is hearing a batch of pleas seeking a collegium-like system for the appointment of ECs and the Chief Election Commissioner.
