Curtailing the central probe agency&rsquo;s powers to probe cases in the state, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday withdrew the 'general consent' granted to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The probe agency will now have to approach the Uddhav government for permission to initiate the investigation on a case by case basis. The development comes a after the CBI registered an FIR in the TRP &lsquo;scam&rsquo; case based on a reference from the Uttar Pradesh Police. The case, which was earlier registered at Hazratganj police station in Lucknow on a complaint of an advertising company promoter, was handed over to the CBI by the UP government. On October 8, the Mumbai police had claimed it had busted a 'racket' of 'fraudulent' manipulation of Television Rating Points involving three channels including Arnab Goswami&rsquo;s Republic TV.

The Delhi High Court Thursday questioned Arnab Goswami for running a parallel investigation and trial in the Congress leader Shashi Tharoor&rsquo;s wife Sunanda Pushkar&rsquo;s death case and directed the journalist to be bound by his undertaking on showing restraint and bringing down the rhetoric while covering the matter.&nbsp;Justice Mukta Gupta said the court was not saying that anyone will gag the media but at the same time, sanctity of investigation must be maintained.&nbsp;The judge said once the police investigation is going on in the criminal case, there cannot be a parallel investigation by the media.&nbsp;The high court referred to&nbsp;a&nbsp;2017 order in which it was stated that &ldquo;Press cannot &lsquo;convict anyone&rsquo; or insinuate&nbsp;a person&nbsp;is guilty or make any other unsubstantiated claims.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Moving the privilege motion against Goswami, Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik accused him of violating the &lsquo;freedom of expression&rsquo; and making uncharitable remarks against CM&nbsp;Uddhav Thackeray.&nbsp;Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal, who is&nbsp;the presiding authority, ruled that &ldquo;action as per legislative rules&rdquo; be taken on the Sarnaik&rsquo;s proposal.&nbsp;&nbsp;A privilege motion was also moved against film actor Kangana Ranaut over her remarks&nbsp;comparing Mumbai to Pakistan occupied Kashmir in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.&nbsp;Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman, accepted both the motions.
