Archeological findings on Tamil Nadu’s coast of Korkai unraveled the origin of one of the ancient civilization,  Pandyan empire’s port city of kolkhai present day Korkai.
Many artifacts, drainage pipes, remains of old houses, baked tiles, conch bangles, iron coins, and pots have been collected from the site. As per the carbon dating of these artifacts, they dated back to 785 BCE or are believed to be 2500 to 3200 years old.
The artifacts excavated from the site suggest that Korkai was one of the rich and well-connected with the rest of the world. It is believed that Korkai had good trade links with Romans, Chinese and Egyptians.
To unveil more from the archeological site and to find the exact location of Korkai city, Tamil Nadu government flag shipped Rs 15 crore, excavation project in the sea. The state archeological department is conducting this operation in collaboration with National Institute of Ocean Technology and Indian Maritime University. To study the artifacts collected through the excavation State archeological department has roped in many other institutes to conduct scientific studies on the artifacts collected from the site and to establish a chronological time order of the events.
Many western writers have mentioned Kolkhai in their books. Writers like Pliny the Elder (1st century CE), Strabo, and Ptolemy had written that Kolkhai was a well connect port and was the prime exporter of pearl fishery, spices, ivory and shells. The archeological department has testified that these products were mainly exported from the port while horses, glass and wine were being imported through the port.
The news wire IANS quoted, R. Padmanabhan, Director of the Socio-Economic Development Foundation, a think tank based out of Madurai, "Several archaeologists and writers including in Sangam literature, as well as western classical writers, have stated that Korkai was the port city of the ancient Pandyan empire. The government has already said that it would bring noted oceanographers as well as archaeologists to determine the materials excavated at Korkai. The Tamiraparani river and the culture associated with it have been sung as ballads in Tamil music and written extensively in Tamil literature. The government announcement of an open museum at Korkai is a welcome move."
Tamil Nadu government is planning to open a museum where the artifacts collected from the site would be showcased. 
Earlier this year Ministers Geetha Jeevan, Anitha Radhakrishnan and Thennarasu flagged off National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT’s) research vessel Sagar Tara from Tuticorin port. The ship is equipped with the state of art technology equipped with Ground Penetrating Radar [GPR] Survey, Magnetometer Survey, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle [UAV] Survey, etc., to identify the ideal locations for carrying out archaeological explorations and excavations. 
The purpose of the survey is to find more evidence like shipwrecks and anchors of that era that will help the archeologists to know more about the civilization.

In a recent excavation in the nondescript village of Vadakkupattu, on the outskirts of Chennai, archeologists unearthed four artifacts from four different time periods in the same pit.&nbsp;
In a historical breakthrough, 12,000-year-old Mesolithic artifacts were unearthed just 75 centimeters below the surface of the site.
The Stone Age artifacts excavated from the site includes scrappers, cleavers, choppers, hand axes, and stone fragments.&nbsp;
Archeologists believe that ancient people used this spot for making stone tools for hunting purposes.&nbsp;
At the upper layer of the same pit 2,000-year-old artifacts such as ceramics, Roman amphora shards, and golden ornaments were found, among others, which hint at trade relations of this area with Rome.
Besides the Teri sites at Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts, Vadakkupattu is the only place in Tamil Nadu where Mesolithic era artifacts have been collected, a senior archaeologist told The Times of India.&nbsp;
In addition to the work done by the ASI, the Tamil Nadu government, earlier this year, flagged off National Institute of Ocean Technology's research vessel, Sagar Tara, from Tuticorin port.
The purpose of the research vessel is to find more evidence like shipwrecks and anchors which will help archeologists know more about past civilizations and their relations with other nations.
