United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday rejected the "misrepresentations" of his remarks a day earlier on Palestinian grievances that infuriated Israel.
"I am shocked by misrepresentations by some of my statement yesterday in the Security Council -- as if I was justifying acts of terror by Hamas," Guterres told reporters, without naming Israel.
Addressing a Security Council session on Tuesday, the UN chief, again without naming Israel, denounced "the clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing in Gaza."
In remarks that especially outraged Israel, he said it was "important to "recognize the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum" as the Palestinians have been "subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation."
Guterres said Wednesday it was "necessary to set the record straight, especially out of respect for the victims and their families."

ISIS terrorist group's Khorasan offshoot has threatened terrorist attacks against embassies of India in Afghanistan, a report by United Nations Secretary-General has warned. Terrorists of the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant-Khorasan (ISIL-K) have also threatened attacks on embassies of China and Iran in Afghanistan.
The objective of the attacks is to undermine the relationship between the Taliban and UN member-states in the region, the report said. ISIL-K is positioning itself as the "primary rival" to Taliban, and wants to portray Taliban as incapable of providing security in the region, UN chief Antonio Guterres warned.
In June last year, India resumed its diplomatic presence in Kabul by deploying a technical team in its embassy in the Afghan capital, over 10 months after it pulled out its officials from the mission following the Taliban's capture of power. The reopening of the embassy took place after an Indian team led by senior Ministry of External Affairs official J.P. Singh had visited Kabul and met acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi and some other members of the Taliban dispensation.
The report of the Secretary-General further added that an attack in September last year on the Russian Embassy in Kabul was the first against a diplomatic presence in Afghanistan since the takeover by the Taliban. In December, ISIL-K claimed attacks against the Embassy of Pakistan and a hotel frequented by Chinese nationals.
&ldquo;Apart from high-profile attacks, ISIL-K conducted near-daily attacks targeting Shia minorities, which also served to undermine the Taliban&rsquo;s authority and challenge their nascent security agencies,&rdquo; the report said.

North Korea's foreign minister called UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "a puppet of the United States" as she slammed the UN chief for joining US-led condemnation of the North's recent intercontinental ballistic missile test.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres earlier issued a statement strongly condemning North Korea's ICBM launch on Friday and reiterating his call on the North to "to immediately desist from taking any further provocative actions."
Guterres's statement came after the United States and other countries issued similar criticism of the North's ICBM test that showed an potential to strike anywhere in the continental US.
"I often take the UN secretary-general for a member of the US White House or its State Department," North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui said in a statement carried by state media.
"I express my strong regret over the fact that the UN secretary-general has taken a very deplorable attitude, oblivious of the purpose and principles of the UN Charter and its proper mission which is to maintain impartiality, objectivity and equity in all matters."
Choe accused Guterres of overlooking the US and its allies taking the North's ICBM test to the UN Security Council, saying that &ldquo;This clearly proves that he is a puppet of the US."

The U.N. Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting for Monday morning on North Korea's ICBM launch at Japan's request.
But it's unclear if it can impose new economic sanctions on North Korea because China and Russia, two of the council's veto-wielding members, have opposed the previous U.S. and its allies' moves to toughen sanctions on the North over its banned tests of ballistic missiles earlier this year.
Friday's ICBM launch was the latest in North Korea's ongoing torrid run of missile tests that experts say are meant to boost its nuclear capability and increase its leverage in future diplomacy.
North Korea said leader Kim Jong Un observed Friday's launch of its Hwasong-17 missile and called it another "reliable and maximum-capacity&rdquo; weapon to contain U.S. military threats.
Some experts say the Hwasong-17 is still under development but it's the North's longest-range missile and is designed to carry several nuclear warheads to overcome US missile defense systems.

Besides climate emeregency, Gueterres also cited the war in Ukraine, multiple conflicts around the world and the dire financial situation of developing countries.On climate change, Guterres said the climate crisis is a case study in moral and economic injustice and the world must end “our suicidal war against nature”.
“The climate crisis is the defining issue of our time. It must be the first priority of every government and multilateral organisation. And yet climate action is being put on the back burner - despite overwhelming public support around the world,” he said.
The G20 emits 80 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions. But the poorest and most vulnerable - those who contributed least to this crisis - are bearing its most brutal impacts, the UN chief said.
His concerns over climate change have emerged after his recent visit to flood-affected Pakistan, which has blamed the first-world nations for the spirallin weather disasters. The nation also sought compensation from the developed world owing to their contribution to green house gases' emissions.

The UN later said that Guterres will head Thursday to Ukraine to see President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
In both visits, Guterres aims to discuss “steps that can be taken right now” to stop the fighting and help people get to safety, UN spokesperson Eri Kaneko said.
"He hopes to talk about what can be done to bring peace to Ukraine urgently," she said.
Guterres had asked Tuesday to meet with the presidents in their respective capitals.
Guterres has urged Russia to stop its attack since it began two months ago, in what he called “the saddest moment” in his five years in the UN's top job. He appealed Tuesday for a four-day “humanitarian pause” in fighting leading up to Sunday's Orthodox Easter holiday.
"Stop the bloodshed and destruction. Open a window for dialogue and peace," he implored.
Guterres sent the UN's top humanitarian official to Moscow and Kyiv earlier this month to explore the possibilities of a cease-fire.
But the secretary-general had faced questions about whether he himself should travel to press for peace. In a recent letter, former UN officials called on him to step up his personal, public involvement.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres officially declared on Monday that he is seeking a second five-year term at the helm of the world body.
Guterres said in a letter to General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir: &ldquo;It would be my honour to continue to serve the organisation in pursuing its purposes and fulfilling its noble objectives.&rdquo; '
The former Portuguese prime minister and UN refugee chief was elected by the 193-member assembly to succeed Ban Ki-moon after a hotly contested race in October 2016 that initially included 13 candidates. Guterres took office on Jan. 1, 2017.
&ldquo;I am available to serve a second term as secretary-general of the United Nations, if that will be the will of member states,&rdquo; Guterres said in a letter to Bozkir. 
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Guterres was responding to a letter from Bozkir on Friday asking his &ldquo;intentions regarding a second mandate".
