Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday walked out of Mumbai's Arthur Road jail in the presence of his supporters.
He has been released in a corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation in April this year. The Bombay High Court on Tuesday had refused to extend its stay on an order granting him bail.
The senior NCP leader had been in jail since November 2021 after the Enforcement Directorate arrested him in an alleged money laundering case. He has been accused of misusing his office by collecting bribe worth over ₹4.70 crore from Mumbai bars through police officers.

Justice M S Karnik had granted bail to the 73-year-old Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader on December 12, but stayed the order for 10 days as the CBI sought time to challenge it in the Supreme Court.
The probe agency moved the apex court but the appeal would be heard only in January 2023 as the court is closed for vacation.
Last week, the high court had extended the stay till December 27 on the CBI's request.
On Tuesday, the central agency sought another extension which was refused by the high court.

Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh is likely to walk out of jail on Wednesday as the Bombay High Court on Tuesday refused to extend its stay on an order granting him bail in a corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Justice M S Karnik had granted bail to the 73-year-old Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader on December 12, but stayed the order for 10 days as the CBI sought time to challenge it in the Supreme Court.

"They are failing to make out any urgency in the Supreme Court, and coming here seeking stay. This cannot be permitted," Nikam argued.
The vacation bench of the High Court, after hearing the arguments, said that "no further extension can be granted".
With the court refusing to extend the stay, Deshmukh could be released on bail on Wednesday, his lawyers told PTI.
The high court, while granting bail to Deshmukh, had noted that except for dismissed police officer Sachin Waze's statement, no testimony recorded by the CBI indicated that money was being extorted from bar owners in Mumbai at the behest of the NCP leader.
Deshmukh approached the high court after a special CBI court rejected his bail plea last month. He sought bail both on medical grounds and merits of the case.
He has been in jail since November 2021 after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested him in an alleged money laundering case.
In April this year, the CBI arrested him in a corruption case.
Deshmukh, who has denied the allegations levelled against him, is in judicial custody at the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai.
In October, the high court had granted him bail in the ED case.
Former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh in March 2021 alleged that Deshmukh, the then home minister, had given a target to police officers to collect Rs 100 crore per month from restaurants and bars in Mumbai.
Former assistant police inspector Waze, who was arrested in the case of an explosives-laden vehicle found near industrialist Mukesh Ambani's house in Mumbai last year, also levelled similar allegations.
The high court in April 2021 directed the CBI to carry out a preliminary inquiry.
Based on this inquiry, the CBI registered an FIR against Deshmukh and others for alleged corruption and misuse of official powers.
The NCP on Tuesday welcomed the court's decision.
In a statement, Mahesh Tapase, chief spokesperson of the party, said, "It has been proved that Anil Deshmukh was wrongfully framed in a fake case and he will come out of the jail tomorrow after spending more than one year behind the bars. We will take his case to the people and make them aware of the injustice meted out to him.&rdquo; The allegations against Deshmukh were politically motivated and no "money trail" was found, he said.
&ldquo;The party extends its support to Deshmukh and we will continue to fight against the people who falsely framed him,&rdquo; Tapase added.

The Bombay High Court on Monday granted bail to former Maharashtra home minister and NCP leader Anil Deshmukh in a corruption case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Deshmukh, however, won't walk out of jail as the high court has kept the order in abeyance for ten days after the CBI sought time to challenge it in the Supreme Court.
A single bench of Justice M S Karnik allowed Deshmukh's bail plea after hearing arguments of both sides.
He is currently in judicial custody and lodged at the Arthur Road prison in Mumbai.
Deshmukh, 74, had approached the high court after a special CBI court rejected his bail plea last month. He sought bail both on medical grounds as well as on merits.

The ED began its probe against Deshmukh after the CBI registered a case against him over allegations of extortion made by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh.
The ED claimed that Deshmukh misused his official position and collected Rs 4.70 crore from various bars and restaurants in Mumbai.
The money was channelled to Nagpur-based Shri Sai Shikshan Sansthan, an educational trust controlled by the Deshmukh family, it alleged.
But the high court noted in the order on Tuesday that two components of credits in the trust's account were not "proceeds of crime".
"The third component (of credit) depends on the statement of Sachin Waze which after discussion this court has held that it falls in favour of the applicant (Deshmukh)," the court said.
He was giving Deshmukh the benefit of a proviso of section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the judge added. As per this provision, a court can grant bail if an accused is a woman, or sick. The high court instructed that Deshmukh shall not tamper with evidence when released. He shall attend the trial on every date and surrender his passport, it added.

Tweeting photos of two men in a car on Friday, Malik claimed that they have been doing a 'recce' of his house and grand children's school, asking for details. A camera is seen in the hands of one of the two men. 
'If anyone knows them please let me know. Those who are in this picture, I want to tell them that if you want any information about me, then I will give all the information,' Malik further said in the tweet.

He added that implicating a minister in a false case is a very serious matter and needs proper investigation. 
"I will complain to the Mumbai Police Commissioner and Home Minister Amit Shah and demand an investigation. I have solid evidence how some people are trying to implicate me (in a false case)," Malik said on Saturday.

A magistrate's court here on Wednesday declared former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh a "proclaimed offender" in an extortion case registered against him and other police officers in the city.
The crime branch of Mumbai Police, which is probing the case, had sought the proclamation, saying that the IPS officer could not be traced even after the issuance of a non-bailable warrant against him.
Under section 82 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, a court can publish a proclamation requiring an accused to appear if a warrant issued against him or her cannot be executed.
As per section 83, after issuing such a proclamation the court can also order attachment of the proclaimed offender's properties.
Former assistant police inspector Sachin Waze is also an accused in the case, registered at Goregaon police station in the city.
Besides Param Bir Singh, co-accused Vinay Singh and Riyaz Bhatti were also declared as proclaimed offender by additional chief metropolitan magistrate S B Bhajipale.
Bimal Agrawal, a real estate developer and hotelier, had alleged that the accused extorted Rs 9 lakh from him for not conducting raid on two bars and restaurants which he ran in partnership, and also forced him to buy two smartphones worth around Rs 2.92 lakh for them.
The incidents occurred between January 2020 and March 2021, he had claimed.
Following his complaint, a case was filed under Indian Penal Code sections 384 and 385 (both pertaining to extortion) and 34 (common intention) against six accused.
Singh is facing an extortion case in Thane too.
He was shunted out from the post of Mumbai police commissioner in March 2021 after Waze was arrested in the case of the SUV with explosives found near industrialist Mukesh Ambani's south Mumbai residence and the death of Thane businessman Mansukh Hiran.
Singh, subsequently, accused then Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh of corruption, a charge the latter denied.

The HC, while remanding Deshmukh in the agency's custody, observed that prime facie there was substance in the ED's application about the legality of special court's order.
A vacation bench of Justice Madhav Jamdar was hearing an application filed by the ED, challenging the special court's order of November 6 remanding Deshmukh to 14-day judicial custody on the ground that it was bad in law and against the principles of natural justice.
Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, appearing for the ED, told the court that based on the probe conducted so far, custodial interrogation was the need of the hour considering the allegation of collection of around Rs 100 crore has been made in the case.
The entire money trail is required to be established and the involvement of foreign angle cannot be ruled out at this stage, the agency said in its application.
Deshmukh's counsel Vikram Chaudhri and advocate Aniket Nikam told the court that while they were opposing the plea on merits and maintainability, the NCP leader has consented and volunteered to be interrogated by the ED.
The ED in its application sought Deshmukh's custody for nine days, but his counsel Chaudhri told the court that they were agreeable only for four-day custody.
The HC observed that prime facie there was substance in the ED's application about the legality of special court's order.
Justice Jamdar said since Deshmukh's advocates have agreed to the ED's custody, it was not going in detail on the aspect of legality of the special court's order.
The HC then remanded Deshmukh to the ED's custody till November 12.
The ED in its application said the special court, by remanding Deshmukh to judicial custody, had denied the agency sufficient and adequate opportunity to investigate a case that has "wide and serious ramifications" and more so, when the probe is at a crucial stage.

A sufficient opportunity needs to be given to the investigating agency to probe the entire gamut of the case, so that it can collect sufficient quality evidence which will help to go to the root of the matter, it added.
The ED said it wants to now confront Deshmukh with dismissed cop Sachin Waze and others, including the NCP leader's family members like his sons Hrishikesh Deshmukh and Salil Deshmukh and his chartered accountant.
Deshmukh was arrested by the ED on November 1 after 12 hours of questioning in connection with the multi-crore money laundering case. He was produced before a special holiday court on November 2 which remanded him in the ED's custody till November 6.
When he was produced before the special court on Saturday, the ED had sought further custody, but the court refused and sent him to judicial custody.
The ED had earlier told the special court that Deshmukh was the "prime beneficiary" of proceeds of crime and directly involved in the offence of money laundering.

The ED had initiated a probe against Deshmukh and his associates after the CBI filed its FIR against the NCP leader on April 21 this year on charges of corruption and misuse of official position.

Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case.
The arrest came after more than 12 hours of questioning at the agency's office in Mumbai.

On October 29, the Bombay High Court had refused to quash the ED summons against Deshmukh and directed him to appear before the agency.
The ED was probing Deshmukh's financial transactions as Maharashtra Home Minister after former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh's allegations of corruption against him. In a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Param Bir Singh had accused Mr Deshmukh of interference and using the police to extort up to ₹ 100 crore every month.
