West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that the renaming of islands in Andaman and Nicobar was done to merely &ldquo;gain popularity&rdquo; since Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had himself named the islands as &lsquo;Shahid&rsquo; and &lsquo;Swaraj&rsquo; Dweep when he had visited the archipelago in 1943.
She also accused the Centre of scrapping the Planning Commission envisaged by the legendary freedom fighter.
Notably, Neil and Havelock islands in Andamans were, in 2018, renamed as &lsquo;Shahid' Dweep and 'Swaraj&rsquo; Dweep by the Centre. Ross Island was also rechristened as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep to honour the freedom fighter.
Banerjee's reaction came hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi named 21 islands of the Union Territory after Param Vir Chakra awardees on the occasion of Bose's 126th birth anniversary.
"Today only to gain popularity, some are claiming to have given names of Andaman islands Shahid and Swaraj Dweep, but these islands were given such names by Bose when he had gone there to inspect Cellular Jail," Banerjee said.
The Bengal CM was addressing a programme held on the occasion of the freedom fighter&rsquo;s birth anniversary.

On the occasion of Prakram Diwas, 21 largest unnamed islands on Andaman and Nicobar were named by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Paramaveer Chakra awardees on Monday.&nbsp;
The largest unnamed island was named after the first Param Vir Chakra awardee, Major Somnath Sharma, who lost his life in action on November 3, 1947 while repulsing Pakistani infiltrators near Srinagar Airport.
Besides, PM Modi also unveiled the model of the National Memorial dedicated to Netaji to be built on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, earlier known as Ross Islands.&nbsp;
Centre in 2021 had declared January 23 as Parakram Diwas to commemorate the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The government has decided to name 21 uninhabited islands in the union territory of Andaman & Nicobar after recipients of Param Vir Chakra , the country’s highest wartime gallantry award.

The first uninhabited island numbered &lsquo;INAN370&rsquo; in North and Middle Andaman has been named after Major Somnath Sharma.

The government has decided to name 21 uninhabited islands in the union territory of Andaman &amp; Nicobar after recipients of Param Vir Chakra , the country&rsquo;s highest wartime gallantry award.
Out of the 21 islands, 16 are located in North and Middle Andaman district, while five islands are in South Andaman.
Speaking to PTI, Andaman and Nicobar Islands MP, Kuldeep Rai Sharma, welcomed the move taken by the Centre for naming the 21 islands after decorated soldiers in assistance with the Defence and the local administration.
&ldquo;I am happy that the Centre has chosen 21 islands from Andaman to honour our brave soldiers. I would also like to request the administration to publish a small handbook for schoolchildren so that they can learn more about their supreme sacrifice for our motherland.
&ldquo;Andaman and Nicobar Island is a &lsquo;tirtha sthan&rsquo; (pilgrimage) because of sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and now such honour for the Param Vir Chakra recipients is a matter of pride for us,&rdquo; Sharma said.
The first uninhabited island numbered &lsquo;INAN370&rsquo; in North and Middle Andaman was named after Major Somnath Sharma. Now &lsquo;INAN370&rsquo; will be known as &lsquo;Somnath Dweep&rsquo;. He was the first and the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. Sharma lost his life in the line of duty on 3 November 1947 while handling Pakistani infiltrators near Srinagar Airport. He was posthumously awarded the highest military award for his gallantry and sacrifice during the Battle of Badgam.
Subedar and Honorary Captain Karam Singh who fought in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, and was awarded the Param Vir Chakra for saving a forward post at Richmar Gali, south of Tithwal (a small border-village in Jammu and Kashmir) was also honoured after the Andaman administration and the Defence Ministry named another uninhabited island numbered &lsquo;INAN308&rsquo; after him as &lsquo;Karam Singh Dweep&rsquo;.
Similarly, Major Rama Raghoba Rane, Naik Jadunath Singh, Company Havildar Major Piru Singh Shekhawat, Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria, Lieutenant Colonel Dhan Singh Thapa Magar, Subedar Joginder Singh Sahnan, Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid, Lieutenant Colonel Ardeshir Burzorji Tarapore, Lance Naik Albert Ekka, Colonel Hoshiar Singh Dahiya, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran, Captain Bana Singh, Captain Vikram Batra, Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar - all recipients of the Param Vir Chakra- were honoured after the islands were named after them.
"Christening of the 21 uninhabited islands of Andaman and Nicobar archipelago with names of Param Vir Chakra heroes is a real tribute to the soldiers &ldquo;who had given their today for our tomorrow,&rdquo; the MP said.
Some of the 21 islands fall under reserved forest while some have great potential for water sports, creek tourism and fishing.
The Andamans in general and the Cellular Jail in particular played a prominent part in the history of our freedom struggle. People who took part in various anti-British movements such as the 1857 revolt, the Wahabi Movement, and the Burmese Rebellion were deported to the Andamans where they lived there under barbaric conditions. Great stalwarts of the freedom struggle were confined in the solitary cells of the Cellular Jail.
&ldquo;In today's fast-moving world and tough competitive day-to-day life, the youth hardly find time to remember our rich heritage and past. This initiative is a testimony to the sacrifices made by Indian Army personnel and youngsters will be aware of their heroic deeds. This becomes most crucial whilst the nation celebrates Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (commemoration of 75 years of Indian Independence),&rdquo; said Col Diptangshu Chaudhury, a war veteran of the Kargil conflict.&nbsp;

The SIT is probing an allegation by a 21-year-old woman that she was gangraped by Narain and others on April 14 and May 1.

Former chief secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Jitendra Narain on Friday appeared before a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for questioning over gangrape charges against him.
Narain was taken to the Police Lines in Port Blair through a rear entrance to avoid protesters.
"A heinous crime was committed against the woman. We want justice for her," a protester, carrying a placard denouncing Narain as a 'rapist', said.
The senior official arrived here on Thursday following a Calcutta High Court order and was escorted out of the airport amid heavy security cover.
He had not responded to questions from reporters, who were waiting for his arrival at the airport.
The SIT is probing an allegation by a 21-year-old woman that she was gangraped by Narain and others on April 14 and May 1.
In an FIR registered at Aberdeen Police Station in Port Blair on October 1, the woman alleged that she was lured to the chief secretary's home with the promise of a government job, and then raped by top officials there.
A vacation bench comprising justices Bibek Chaudhuri and Prasenjit Biswas has granted interim protection against arrest to Narain till a date that will be fixed by the circuit bench of the Calcutta High Court in Port Blair on November 14, on its first date of sitting after the Durga Puja vacation.
The court also noted that Narain, who was transferred to Delhi on July 21, has declared that he is ready and willing to cooperate with the investigation.
The bench allowed the SIT to interrogate and take all other steps such as medical examination of the petitioner in the course of interrogation.
A joint team of police officers from Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Delhi had raided the house of Narain on October 18, following which he filed an application before the Delhi High Court praying for transit anticipatory bail.
A single bench of the Delhi High Court granted interim protection from arrest to Narain till October 28.
He, thereafter, filed an application before the Calcutta High Court praying for an extension of time on the ground that the next circuit bench at Port Blair will start from November 14, so that he gets an opportunity to pray for anticipatory bail before it in the Andaman and Nicobar capital.

The Indian Express has reported that over 20 women are alleged to have been taken to former Chief Secretary of Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands, Jitendra Narain&rsquo;s house in Port Blair during his tenure and and some of them are said to have got jobs in lieu of being sexually exploited.
Investigators told the newspaper that police has found evidence and recorded key witness statements pointing to an alleged job-for-sex racket.&nbsp;
Narain, and former Labour Commissioner R L Rishi have been accused of sexual exploitation by a 21-year-old woman leading to the formation of Special Investigation Team which is probing the case.&nbsp;
Narain is expected to appear before the SIT on October 28, the last date set for his appearance by the Calcutta High Court.
 Senior police officers in Port Blair confirmed to The Indian Express that call data records of mobile phones of the two bureaucrats, and of the 21-year-old 'match' the alleged sequence of events on two dates, as provided by the woman.
Sources have also confirmed to the newspaper that the hard disk of the CCTV camera system installed at Narain&rsquo;s house was first erased and, subsequently, removed at the time of his transfer from Port Blair to Delhi in July.
Denying the charges, Narain, in letters to the Home Ministry and the island administration, has said there is a &ldquo;conspiracy&rdquo; against him and claimed that he has &ldquo;specific materials which demonstrate the fake nature of the case.&rdquo;
He has challenged his presence in Port Blair on one of the two dates given in the FIR and cited air tickets and appointment schedules to show his presence in New Delhi.&nbsp;
Narain was suspended on orders of the Home Ministry on October 17 and has got interim bail until November 14. Rishi has also been suspended and non-bailable warrants have been issued in his name after his bail plea was rejected in Port Blair.

Senior IAS officer Jitendra Narain, accused of raping a woman in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, was on Monday suspended by the government with immediate effect.

The ministry received a report on Sunday from the Andaman and Nicobar Police regarding the alleged sexual assault of a lady by Narain, when he was serving as chief secretary of the archipelago.&nbsp;

According to a Union home ministry statement, the government is committed to ensuring zero-tolerance towards the acts of indiscipline by its officials irrespective of their rank and status, especially with regard to incidents involving the dignity of women.
The ministry received a report on Sunday from the Andaman and Nicobar Police regarding the alleged sexual assault of a lady by Narain, when he was serving as chief secretary of the archipelago.&nbsp;
As the report indicated the possibility of grave misconduct and misuse of official position on the part of Narain, an IAS of the AGMUT cadre of the 1990 batch, Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed immediate strict action against the officer concerned as per the law.
Accordingly, Narain has been placed under suspension with immediate effect and disciplinary proceedings have been ordered against him, the statement said.

A 21-year-old woman has reportedly accused two serving bureaucrats of sexual assault in Andaman Nicobar&rsquo;s Port Blair.
According to an Indian Express report, one of the accused named in the complaint filed by the victim is Jitendra Narain- a 1990 batch IAS officer. Narain was Chief Secretary, Andaman &amp; Nicobar until 3 months ago. The other man accused by the woman is RL Rishi posted as Labour Commissioner in A&amp;N Islands.
The alleged sexual assault according to a complaint by the woman occurred in the months of April and May. On October 1, 2022, &nbsp;an FIR was lodged after the Director General of Police, A&amp;N Islands responded to an August 22, 2022 dated complaint by the victim. Following the FIR a special investigating team has been set up to probe the charges against serving bureaucrats, Indian express reported.&nbsp;
The woman&rsquo;s complaint, as seen by the Indian Express, carries a detailed account of the alleged violent sexual attack on the 21-year-old on two occasions at night in April and May at Narain&rsquo;s official residence in Port Blair. Sharing her ordeal, the victim has said that he became acquainted with the accused men through a hotel owner as she was looking for a job.&nbsp;

As per the Indian Express report, the victim was then taken to Narain&rsquo;s residence in a car that was registered in Rishi&rsquo;s name on the pretext of getting her government employment. There, she said, she was offered liquor which she refused. Subsequently, she alleged, she was brutally and sexually abused by the two men. The victim has also alleged that she was threatened with dire consequences if she spoke about the matter to anyone, the report said.&nbsp;
Citing sources, the IE report said the SIT will handle the probe in a &ldquo;fair and time-bound&rdquo; manner. Besides, a Section 164 CrPC (confessional statement) of the woman has been recorded by the SIT as well as by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Port Blair where she filed a second complaint.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, RL Rishi did not respond to queries by the Indian Express, Naraine, who is currently Chairman &amp; Managing Director of the Delhi Financial Corporation has denied the charge calling it &lsquo;absurd&rsquo;.&nbsp;

A low-pressure area in southeast Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea is moving in the east-northeast direction, and is likely to intensify into a depression on March 20. It may transform into Cyclone Asani on March 21, the IMD was quoted as saying. Subsequently, the cyclone may move in the north-northeast direction, hitting northern Myanmar, and southeast Bangladesh on March 22. 
In the Indian islands of Andaman and Nicobar, heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted. Some spots in the Nicobar chain may experience extremely heavy rainfall. The Indian Coast Guard took pre-emptive measures and started warning vessels in the region to begin returning to ports.
An official was quoted in a Hindustan Times report as saying that April and May are cyclone season, not March. The official said that Asani may weaken before landfall, but since it is close to Andaman and Nicobar islands, heavy rains and strong winds are expected.

The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of a cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal.
A low-pressure area in southeast Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea is moving in the east-northeast direction, and is likely to intensify into a depression on March 20.&nbsp;It may transform into Cyclone Asani on March 21, the IMD was quoted as saying.&nbsp;Subsequently, the cyclone may move in the north-northeast direction, hitting northern Myanmar, and southeast Bangladesh on March 22.

8 Indian beaches have received the coveted 'Blue Flag certification', an eco-level tag awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education for safe, clean and environment friendly beaches and sustainable boating tourism operators.
The beaches that bagged the certification are Kappad beach in Kerala&rsquo;s Kozhikode district, Shivrajpur in Gujarat, Goghla in Diu, Kasarkod and Padubidri in Karnataka, Golden beach in Odisha, Rushikonda in Andhra Pradesh and Radhanagar Beach in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
