Human rights organisation Amnesty International has accused the Chinese government of sponsoring a cyber attack against it.
Amnesty's Canadian wing claimed that the hack attack left the organisation offline for almost 3 weeks. Amnesty said that the breach was first detected on 5 October 2022, and the searches were specifically related to China, Hong Kong, and some Chinese activists.
US cybersecurity firm Secureworks said that "a threat group sponsored or tasked by the Chinese state" was the likely perpetrator.
Beijing didn't immediately respond to the charges.

"As an organization advocating for human rights globally, we are very aware that we may be the target of state-sponsored attempts to disrupt or surveil our work. These will not intimidate us and the security and privacy of our activists, staff, donors, and stakeholders remain our utmost priority," Ketty Nivyabandi, Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada, said.
In August, the cybersecurity firm Recorded Future listed Amnesty and the International Federation for Human Rights among organizations that Chinese hackers were targeting through password-stealing schemes designed to harvest credentials.

According to cybersecurity journalist Kim Jetter, Amnesty International, in a new statement, has said the list of numbers was indicative of the interests of the company's clients.
The statement adds, investigative journalists and media outlets have made clear from the outset, in very clear language, that this is a list of numbers marked as numbers of interest to NSO customers, meaning they are the kind of people NSO clients might like to spy on.
The statement went on to say that the list contains the kind of people NSO's clients would ordinarily be interested in spying on, but the list isn't specifically a list of people who were being actually spied on.

The list of numbers is at the heart of the Pegasus project, an investigation conducted by Paris-based organisation Forbidden Stories and Amnesty International, that found that more than 50,000 phone numbers, including those of politicians, journalists and activists, who were believed to have been potential targets of surveillance.

The 'kafala' system tied workers to their employers, who had say over whether they could leave their jobs or even the country. Qatar also has adopted a minimum monthly wage of 1,000 Qatari riyals. The minimum wage rule requires employers to pay allowances for housing and food as well if they don't provide those for their workers.

Dubai, PTI: New labour rules in the energy-rich nation of Qatar &ldquo;effectively dismantles&rdquo; the country's long-criticised &ldquo;kafala&rdquo; employment system, a UN labour body said Sunday.
The International Labour Organisation said as of now, migrant workers can change jobs before the end of their contracts without obtaining the permission of their current employers.
Qatar also has adopted a minimum monthly wage of 1,000 Qatari riyals (USD 275) for workers, which will take effect some six months after the law is published in the country's official gazette, the ILO said.
The minimum wage rule requires employers to pay allowances for housing and food as well if they don't provide those for their workers.
Amnesty International praised the move as &ldquo;an encouraging sign that Qatar may finally be heading in the right direction,&rdquo; although employers still can file criminal charges against &ldquo;absconding&rdquo; employees, meaning those who left their jobs without permission.
&ldquo;We call on Qatar to go further with these reforms, including removing the charge of absconding, to make sure that the rights of all workers are fully protected,&rdquo; Amnesty official Steve Cockburn said in a statement.
Qatar, whose citizens enjoy one of the world's highest per-capita incomes due to its natural gas reserves, partially ended the &ldquo;kafala&rdquo; system in 2018.
That system ties workers to their employers, who had say over whether they could leave their jobs or even the country.
Qatar is being transformed by a building boom fuelled by its vast oil and natural gas wealth.
Like other energy-rich Gulf nations with relatively small local populations, Qatar relies on well over a million guest workers, many of them drawn from South Asian nations including India and Nepal.
Rights activists long have criticized the &ldquo;kafala&rdquo; system as allowing abuses of those foreign workers.
