A diplomatic row has broken out between the UK and Indonesia over a flag hoisted at the British embassy in Jakarta.
On May 17, a rainbow LGBT flag was hoisted alongside the national flag at the British embassy in the Muslim-majority nation. It was to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
Posting the flag's photos on social media, the embassy had written, "Sometimes it is important to take a stand for what you think is right, even if disagreement between friends can be uncomfortable."
But the move did not go down well with the host country. The Indonesian government summoned the British envoy as Islamic conservatives in the country cried foul. Britain was asked by Indonesia to be respectful of local "sensitivities on matters relevant to culture, religion, and belief".
Homosexuality is legal in Indonesia except in the sharia-ruled province of Aceh. However, growing influence of Islamic conservatives in the world's largest Muslim-majority country is reinforcing the social taboo surrounding homosexuality.

Eric Garcetti, Biden's nominee for next envoy to New Delhi, said he will double-down on US' efforts to strengthen India's capacity to "secure its borders".
Garcetti is currently serving as the Mayor of Los Angeles and is a personal confidant of Biden.
During his confirmation hearing for US Ambassador to India, Garcetti said, "Despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, bilateral trade is expected to reach new heights, I intend to champion an ambitious economic partnership with India that reduces market access barriers and bolsters fair trade and creates good jobs for the American middle class.”

Garcetti said he will make the efforts “through information sharing, counterterrorism coordination, joint freedom of navigation patrols and military exercises and sales of our best defence technologies in order to realise the full potential of our major defence partnership.”
He further said if confirmed, he will work closely with India to support a similarly bold approach to promoting green energy through the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and through the Agenda 2030 Climate and Clean Energy Partnership.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Chinese counterpart Gen. Wei Fenghe on Friday held over a two-hour-long meeting in Moscow. The focus of the meet was on easing escalating border tension in eastern Ladakh, PTI reported quoting government sources. It was the first high-level political face-to-face meeting between the two sides after the border row erupted along the LAC in eastern Ladakh in early May. Reports said during the talks, Singh insisted on restoration of the status quo ante in eastern Ladakh and expediting the disengagement of troops. The Indian side also reportedly objected to Chinese army's fresh attempts to change the status quo in the southern bank of Pangong lake and insisted on resolution of the standoff through talks.

Moscow/New Delhi, PTI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Chinese counterpart Gen. Wei Fenghe on Friday held over a two-hour-long meeting in Moscow. The focus of the meet was on easing escalating border tension in eastern Ladakh, government sources said.
It was the first high-level political face-to-face meeting between the two sides after the border row erupted along the Line of Actual Control(LAC) in eastern Ladakh in early May. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval have previously held separate telephonic talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to resolve the standoff.
Sources said that during the talks Singh insisted on restoration of the status quo ante in eastern Ladakh and disengagement of troops in an expeditious way.
"The meeting between Raksha Mantri Shri @rajnathsingh and Chinese Defence Minister, General Wei Fenghe in Moscow is over. The meeting lasted for 2 hours and 20 minutes," Singh's office tweeted.
Sources said the Indian delegation strongly objected to Chinese army's fresh attempts to change the status quo in the southern bank of Pangong lake and insisted on resolution of the standoff through talks.
"The focus of the talks between the two defence ministers was on ways to resolve the prolonged border standoff," a source said.
Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and Indian Ambassador to Russia D B Venkatesh Varma were part of the Indian delegation at the talks that began at around 9:30 pm IST at a prominent hotel in Moscow.
The meeting was requested by the Chinese defence minister, the sources said.
Both Singh and Wei are in Moscow to attend a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation(SCO) defence ministers which took place earlier in the day.
In his address at the SCO ministerial meet, Singh said peace and security in the region demands a climate of trust, non-aggression, peaceful resolution of differences and respect for international rules. The SCO is a eight-nation grouping.
Singh's comments in the presence of the Chinese defence minister was seen as a veiled message to China over the border row in eastern Ladakh.
Indian and Chinese troops are engaged in a bitter standoff in multiple places in eastern Ladakh.
Tensions flared up again in the region after China unsuccessfully attempted to occupy Indian territory in the southern bank of Pangong lake five days ago when the two sides were engaged in diplomatic and military talks to resolve the border row.
