Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Wednesday asserted the recent Lok Sabha poll results point to the fact that India is not a &lsquo;Hindu Rashtra&rsquo;.
Sen, who arrived in Kolkata from the US in the evening, also expressed displeasure over the &ldquo;continuation&rdquo; of putting people behind bars &ldquo;without trial&rdquo; even under the new dispensation.
"That India is not a &lsquo;Hindu Rashtra&rsquo; only has been reflected in the election results," Sen told a Bengali news channel at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here.
"We always hope to see a change after every election. Some of what happened earlier (during the BJP-led central government) like putting people behind bars without trial, and widening the gap between the rich and poor, are still continuing. That must stop,&rdquo; he said.
The eminent economist said there is a need to be politically open-minded, especially when India is a secular country with a secular Constitution.
&ldquo;I do not think the idea of turning India into a &lsquo;Hindu Rashtra&rsquo; is appropriate,&rdquo; Sen, 90, said.
He was also of the opinion that the new Union cabinet is &ldquo;a copy of the earlier one&rdquo;.
&ldquo;The ministers continue to hold similar portfolios. Despite a slight reshuffle, the politically powerful are still powerful,&rdquo; he said.
Sen recalled that during his childhood when India was under the British rule, people were jailed without any trial.
&ldquo;When I was young, many of my uncles and cousins were put in jail without trial. We had hoped that India would be free from this. Congress is also to blame for the fact that this did not stop. They didn't change it... But, this is more in practice under the present government,&rdquo; the Nobel laureate said.
On the BJP losing the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat despite building the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Sen said attempts were made to overshadow the country&rsquo;s true identity.
"... Building the Ram Temple spending so much money... to portray India as a &lsquo;Hindu Rashtra&rsquo;, which should not have happened in the country of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. It shows an attempt to neglect India&rsquo;s true identity, and it must change,&rdquo; he said.
Sen also said that unemployment was on the rise in India, and sectors like primary education and primary healthcare were being neglected.&nbsp;

Speaking to PTI, Sen said the scrapping electoral bonds will lead to greater transparency in electoral politics.

Eminent economist and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Monday described the electoral bonds scheme as a scandal and welcomed the Supreme Court's recent judgment annulling it.
Speaking to PTI from Massachusetts, USA, Sen said that the move will lead to greater transparency among people in the electoral context.
"Electoral bonds were a scandal, and I am glad that they have now been dropped. I hope there will be more transparency in the support that people give to each other in the electoral context," Sen said.
In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court annulled the electoral bonds scheme on February 15, citing violations of the Constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression, as well as the right to information.
The apex court directed the State Bank of India (SBI) to disclose details of each electoral bond encashed by political parties to the Election Commission. This information should include the date of encashment and the denomination of the bonds and be submitted to the poll panel by March 6.
According to Sen, India's electoral system has been significantly affected by the nature of politics, making it difficult for the common people to be heard.
"The electoral system in India is much affected by the nature of party politics, which makes it very hard for common people to get the hearing that they should get in the polls," he said.
The economist said the country's electoral system is influenced by how the government treats opposition parties.
"It is influenced by the treatment of opposition parties and those that the government would like to keep under restrictions. We do want a free electoral system as much as possible, in addition to freedom of speech and action of citizens," he said.
"The Indian Constitution wanted to give all citizens substantial political freedom and did not want any particular community to have privileged standing," Sen said.
The Nobel laureate said he hasn't been keeping well.
Incidentally, senior Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram had also hailed the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the electoral bond scheme, saying it is a great victory for transparency.

Fake news about Amartya Sen's death started doing rounds after an account with the name and picture of Claudia Goldin, the winner of this year's Nobel Prize in Economics tweeted that Amartya Sen had died.&nbsp;
However, his daughter set the record straight saying Sen had just spent a week with her in Cambridge.&nbsp;

A major political storm is brewing in West Bengal with the Visva-Bharati University taking on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The varsity's spokesperson in a recent statement reportedly said that Visva-Bharati is a central university, and is "better off" without Mamata's blessings because it is used to "margdarshan" (guidance) of the Prime Minister.
CM Mamata had recently criticised university authorities for accusing Nobel laureate Amartya Sen of occupying 0.13 acres of its land illegally. She also gave Sen some land documents, saying that no one can question him in the future.
"Allegations of land grabbing against him (Amartya Sen) are baseless. It is an attempt to tarnish his reputation. No one has the right to insult him. We won't tolerate it," Banerjee said as the economist sat beside her at his home.
The CM said her government would decide on the next course of legal action once she is back in Kolkata.

Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen on Sunday said that the 'atmosphere of intolerance' prevailing in India will not last long as people will have to come together and fight against it.
As per an Indian Express report, Sen's remarks came while interacting with students, teachers and research scholars at a programme organised in Kolkata at the Amartya Sen Research Centre.&nbsp;
Sen said people are being beaten up in the country for either not listening to others or voicing their disagreement. "This will not last long", he added.
Sen further said, there is a need to sort out differences and reduce the distances between people.&nbsp;
Reply to a seventh grade student who asked the "benefits of a combined pursuit", Sen said, &ldquo;Is diversity always good? Of late, India has had diversity which was not there before. There is a need to look at both advantages and disadvantages of diversity.&rdquo;, reported the Indian Express.

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen will not receive the ‘Bangabibhusan’, the highest civilian award conferred by the West Bengal government, during an event scheduled to be held on Monday, his family said.
Sen is understood to have told state government officials in the first week of July when approached, that he will not be in India when the presentation ceremony takes place. It is scheduled to be held in Kolkata during the day.
“He is presently in Europe,” a family member told PTI.
Asked if the decision had anything to do with the appeal by CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty to the prospective recipients, including Sen, to not receive the award from the TMC government, a key minister of which was arrested for alleged involvement in a school jobs scam, she said the octogenarian had intimated the organisers before any such developments took place that he will be unavailable.
“He has had the good fortune of being honoured with several awards, and wants the ‘Bangabibhusan’ to be conferred on others now,” the celebrated economist’s daughter Antara Dev Sen told a local news channel.
