This year Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra will commence on 1st July, following which SASB has issued a list of permitted and banned food items during the yatra.&nbsp;

Every year lakhs of pilgrims travel to the cave shrine of Amarnath which is located at a height of 3,880 metres in the south of Kashmir. This year Shri Amarnath ji Yatra will commence on 1st July and will culminate on 31 August.&nbsp;
For many years it has been observed that due to the high altitude of the cave, many devotees fall sick with symptoms like loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, weakness, difficulty in sleeping, bowel dysfunction among others. And, to keep the pilgrimage health in check Shri Amarnath ji Shrine Board (SASB) has shared a list of permitted and banned food items during the yatra.&nbsp;

From the year 1991 to 1996, the annual pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath was held under the threat of militant groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir. But in the year 1996, when the militants reportedly assured that they would not interfere in the pilgrimage, the number of pilgrims swelled from the previous years.   That year the elections were also being held in Jammu and Kashmir after the Centre had imposed governor’s rule at the onset of the militancy in the Himalayan region.   Most reports suggest that between August 21 and 25, nearly one lakh pilgrims were simultaneously moving either up or down between Jammu and the holy cave.   During this period, there was unusually heavy snowfall along with severe blizzards along the pilgrimage route. Over 263 bodies of pilgrims were found in and about the surroundings of the cave located in the high mountains. The devotees had died of severe cold, exhaustion and exposure.  The Jammu and Kashmir government constituted a committee headed by the retired IAS officer Nitish Sengupta to conduct a probe.  Sengupta had opined that the heavy casualties were due to excessive flow of the pilgrims, the state government’s attention being diverted by the election being held at the same time and their consequent inability to face the crises.

No lives were lost in last year&rsquo;s July 28 flood &nbsp;as there was no yatra in 2021 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said the government should order an inquiry to ascertain how tents and community kitchens were set up in a highly-vulnerable area close to the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/at-least-13-people-dead-amarnath-yatra-suspended-after-cloudburst-1657333437064" target="_blank">Amarnath cave shrine </a>in the south Kashmir Himalayas, which was hit by flash floods on Friday.
"We are hopeful that the government will form an inquiry commission to know how it happened and why it happened," Abdullah told reporters after meeting Yashwant Sinha, the joint opposition candidate for the July 18 presidential polls, here.
The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister questioned the decision to set up tents and "langar" (community kitchen) at such a vulnerable area.

He said the kin of the victims should be given compensation and steps should be taken to ensure that such incidents do not take place again.
The death toll in the flash floods triggered by heavy rain near the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/watch-cloudburst-near-amarnath-cave-rescue-operation-underway-1657288752571" target="_blank">Amarnath</a> cave shrine rose to 16 on Saturday as the search operations continued without a break amid fears that many are still trapped under the debris.

 A flash flood triggered by a cloudburst near the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir swept away scores of people, killing at least 13 and swamping tents and community kitchens with mud and rocks hurtling down a hillside, police and NDRF officials said.
An official said the Amarnath yatra, which began on June 30, has been suspended following the tragedy and a decision on its resumption will be taken after rescue operations get over.
An official on the ground said about 30-35 people are missing while five have been rescued. 
According to the automatic weather station at the holy cave, the area received 31 mm rainfall from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
The gushing waters hit the base camp outside the shrine, damaging 25 tents and three community kitchens where the pilgrims are served food, according to officials.

Cloudburst near Amarnath cave : Over 10 people have died and over 40 are missing after a cloud burst near the base camp of the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas on Friday, officials said.
The cloudburst hit the cave area at around 5.30 pm after heavy rains, they said.
Police and other civil administration have launched a rescue operation as some langars were affected by the gushing waters, the officials said.
