A dramatic 10-day saga that gripped social media and shocked an entire village came to an end after a 39-year-old woman, who eloped with her would-be son-in-law just days before her daughter's marriage, surrendered with her 'beau' at Dadon police station in Aligarh district, officials said.
Sapna Devi from Manoharpur village also made it clear to the police that her relationship with 25-year-old Rahul, who was to become her son-in-law, was not a temporary affair but a committed one.
"It is not a short-term liaison. It's a lifelong relationship," she reportedly said while surrendering before police on Wednesday along with Rahul.
The duo's disappearance on April 6 sparked widespread outrage and speculation, particularly as it came barely 10 days before Sapna's daughter's scheduled marriage to Rahul from a neighbouring village.
After Sapna went 'missing', her panicked family members approached the police, only to discover that the groom-to-be was missing as well.
Speaking to reporters, Rahul claimed that he acted out of concern for Sapna.
"She told me that her family was harassing her for which she was even contemplating suicide. I just wanted to help her," Rahul said, adding that they now intend to get married.
According to investigators, a mobile phone given to Rahul by Sapna's family ahead of the wedding became the medium through which the two developed a relationship.
The phone facilitated a secret communication channel between Sapna and Rahul, eventually culminating in their elopement.
"The couple surrendered at Dadon police station and were later shifted to Madraak police station for interrogation. They have been placed at a one-stop centre and their statement will be recorded before a magistrate on Thursday," SP (Rural) Amrit Jain told reporters on Wednesday night.
Jain said the couple travelled to Sitamarhi in Bihar and then crossed over to Nepal before surrendering.
"As they sensed the noose tightening around their necks, the couple decided to return to Aligarh and surrender before the police," the SP said.
Meanwhile, Sapna's husband Jitendra, their daughter, and her brother reached the police station and demanded Sapna to return the jewellery and Rs 5 lakh in cash she allegedly took with her.
Sapna, however, denied the accusation, calling it "completely concocted."

A 21-year-old man in Aligarh district has found himself behind bars in Pakistan due to a romantic relationship with a girl from across the border, officials here said.
The young man, identified as Badal Babu, was arrested on December 28 by Pakistani authorities in the Punjab province for illegally crossing into the neighbouring country without any legal documents, the officials said.
The shockwave from this unexpected incident reached Babu's village through the media. His parents, who had believed their son was working in a factory in Delhi, were shocked to learn of his arrest through a report sourced from a Pakistani news portal.
Babu's father, Kirpal Singh, who lives in Khitkari village under Barla police station area, told media that the family learned of their son's arrest via social media.
"We couldn't believe it. For us, till this moment we knew that he was working in Delhi, but the next moment we are shocked to discover that he's in a Pakistani jail. It's like something out of a movie," he said, in disbelief.
The family has now appealed to the Indian government, particularly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to intervene and negotiate with Pakistan for Babu's release.
"We want our son back and we don't know how to bring him home. We are calling on the prime minister to help us," Babu's mother said, speaking to reporters.
"He was a simple boy. He never did anything like this before," she added.
Aligarh Superintendent of Police (Rural) Amrit Jain confirmed that they had received a memorandum from the family and would be taking the matter up with the Ministry of External Affairs.
"We will approach the proper channels to provide whatever assistance is necessary and work towards establishing contact with Babu. Our primary goal is to secure his release from custody in Pakistan," Jain said in a statement.
According to family sources, Babu was very active on Facebook, where he reportedly connected with a girl from Pakistan. After informing his parents that he would be heading to Delhi for work, Babu left his village after Raksha Bandhan in August.
Just before Diwali, his family received a video call on WhatsApp, in which Babu reassured them that he was safe, had found a job and was using a friend's phone because he could not afford his own. His family later learned that Babu had somehow crossed the international border near Jammu, although these details remain unconfirmed, the sources said.

The Aligarh Nagar Nigam has passed a resolution seeking a change in the city's name to 'Harigarh'.
The resolution, which was passed on Monday, will be sent to the Uttar Pradesh government for consideration, said BJP corporator Sanjay Pandit.
The proposal in this regard was moved by Pandit.
In 2021, a similar resolution was passed by the District Panchayat and sent to the state government for further action.
Some senior ministers of the state had raised the issue during the visit of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to Aligarh on August 21 this year.
Aligarh, which houses the famous Aligarh Muslim University, was earlier called Ramgarh, according to the UP government website.
In the mid-1700s, the city was renamed Aligarh after its most important fort.
The first attempt to change the name of Aligarh was made by former chief minister Kalyan Singh in 1992 but he could not succeed as there was a Congress government at the Centre.
In 2015, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had also pushed for recognition of the fact that Aligarh's original name was 'Harigarh'.
The Yogi Adityanth government has already changed the name of Faizabad district to Ayodhya, Allahabad to Prayagraj and rechristened Mughalsarai Junction as Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction.

The action against the constable, who was posted in Bulandshahr district, came after a report from the Aligarh senior superintendent of police about the incident that took place on Friday.
According to the police, the girl is from Kasgunj district, and she was visiting a relative in the village near Atrauli.
The accused policeman, who is related to the family, had gone to the village as well, and on Friday night, he took the girl to a neighbouring village on his motorcycle and allegedly raped her, the officials said.
Later, he also allegedly threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed it to anyone, and fled the spot, according to the FIR.
The minor somehow managed to return to her relative's place and informed them about the incident, following which a case was registered at the Atrauli police station.
The accused was arrested on Saturday evening, and the girl was admitted to a hospital for a medical examination.
A senior police officer said a case under relevant sections of the IPC and the POSCO Act was filed against the policeman after the medical report confirmed the rape charge.
