Former India cricketer Arun Lal was in awe of Akash Deep's performance in the second Test against England at Birmingham, saying he was "absolutely special".
Akash Deep shone bright with a 10-wicket haul in India's series levelling 336-run win over England at Edgbaston.
He picked up 4/88 in the first innings and then followed it up with a splendid 6/99 in the second essay to return with impressive match figures of 10/187.
The 28-year-old pacer's effort helped India draw level the five-match series after losing the opener by five wickets at Leeds.
"He was absolutely special," Lal told PTI TV.
"There was never a question about his abilities. He was strong, hard-working&hellip;The only thing missing was self-belief. He's more confident now, bowling smarter and with patience. He doesn't go searching for a wicket every ball.
"And the more belief he gains, the faster and better he'll get. He can clock 145 kph and has that rare ability to break partnerships," he noted.
Coming from a humble background, Akash Deep initially didn't expect to don the national colours, Lal said.
"He didn't really understand how good he was, and he didn't think that he could play for India," said Lal.
"I just wanted him to understand that this is just the beginning. 'Ranji jeetna hai, India khelna hai, aur lamba India khelna hai'." While Akash Deep grabbed headlines, young India skipper Shubman Gill showed his prowess, scoring 269 and 161 at Birmingham and took his match aggregate to 430, the second-highest ever in Test history.
"I love Shubman as a cricketer, he is awesome but I never realised he was this good. I'm sure nobody else did either. He has unbelievable talent, unbelievable calm. It's almost as though he knows what ball is coming before it's bowled," Lal said.
"He's not an auto-pilot captain, which I admire. He listens, takes advice from (KL) Rahul, (Ravindra) Jadeja and others. His patience and self-assurance are rubbing off on the group. He's going to be here for a long, long time." Lal was highly impressed with India's comeback at Edgbaston after losing the series opener.
"I must admit that when this team was going to England, I didn't think they had this kind of determination, this kind of belief, this kind of capability," said the former India opener.
"This team has performed far better than expected, and I am so glad about that. These youngsters, once given a chance and that confidence, you better watch out. If you're sitting out, it will be difficult to break in soon," he added.
Lal expects Kuldeep Yadav to be drafted in the playing XI for the third Test beginning at Lord's on Thursday.
"It's a big question as far as I'm concerned. You're playing so many batters till number nine and I'm not in favour of that. You need impact bowlers. Kuldeep is in form, and England's lower order can struggle against wrist spin," he said.

India skipper Shubman Gill lauded fast bowlers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj for stepping up in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, crediting their combined 17-wicket haul for making his job as captain significantly "easier".
India registered a historic 336 run in the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham to level the five match series 1-1.
Akash Deep delivered a match-winning performance with a 10-wicket haul, including his maiden five-for in the second innings. Siraj also contributed with seven wickets across both innings.
"When your two fast bowlers take 17 wickets, then it becomes easy for the skipper. Bumrah bhai was not there but the bowlers we have in the squad are capable of taking 20 wickets in a match," Gill told former India batting star Cheteshwar Pujara on JioHotstar after the team's win.
Having been comprehensively beaten in the opening Test, Gill credited the turnaround to improved execution with the ball and sharper fielding.
"There have been a lot of instances where we have lost the first match of the series and then we had made comebacks. So we knew how to make comebacks. If we consistently score 450 runs, our bowlers will keep us in the game... All the things we spoke about after the last game, we were spot on with all of those things. I think the way we came back with our bowling and fielding was tremendous to see," Gill said at the post-match presentation.
India's dominant win was set up by Gill himself, who scored a stunning 269 in the first innings and followed it up with 161 in the second, laying the foundation for the massive 608-run target.
"On this kind of wicket, we knew that if we got 400&ndash;500 runs, it would be enough. Not every game will be like Headingley. They (bowlers) were magnificent. The way we were able to get through their top order, they bowled brilliantly."
Gill also praised Prasidh Krishna for maintaining pressure despite not having many wickets to show for his effort. Even Prasidh, he didn't get as many wickets but he bowled brilliantly.
"He (Akash Deep) hit the right lengths and was getting the ball to move both ways, which was difficult on a pitch like this. He was magnificent for us," Gill said.
He added that sometimes captaincy can cloud a batter's instinct to take risks, but he didn't let that affect him. "I am definitely feeling comfortable with my game and if we are able to win the series with my contributions, it'll be great. As I said before, I want to play as a batsman, and go out as a batsman and make decisions as a batsman. Sometimes you won't take some risks when you're thinking as a captain which you have to do as a batsman."
He once again stated that Bumrah will be back for the third Test at Lord's.
England skipper Ben Stokes rued the missed opportunities that allowed India to wrest control of the Test. "Having them at 200 for 5, we were really happy there and not being able to burst them open there and being 80 for 5, it's tough to be able to scrape it back from there."
He admitted the conditions began to favour India as the game wore on. "You look back at the start of the game, 200/5, if we were able to get some wickets quicker, things could have been a little different. As the game got deeper and deeper, it sort of turned into a wicket, probably suited India more than us to be honest."
"Being 80/5 in reply to India's big first innings total is obviously going to be tough from there. We ran in and tried everything, we changed plans and when a team is on top of you, obviously India is a class team. It's always very hard to wrestle back when the opposition is full of world-class performers."
He lavished praise on youngsters Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, who both scored centuries in the first essay.
"Jamie has been incredible since he came into the team, he has been exceptional with the bat and he goes massively into the radar with his wicket-keeping. Just shows that his natural game and the way him and Harry were able to wrestle the momentum back towards us, I thought it was a very, very special part of the game to watch from the dressing room," Gill concluded.

The 28-year-old Akash Deep took a match-haul of 10 wickets, including his maiden five-for -- 6/99 in England second innings with the hosts getting all-out for 271 in pursuit of an improbable 608.&nbsp;
If Gill, with his magnificent batting (269 and 161) set it up, Akash deserves equal credit for his lion-hearted effort on a track which was primarily a bowler's graveyard.&nbsp;
The rain delayed the start of the day by an hour and 40 minutes, reducing the day&rsquo;s quota of overs to 80 with England resuming their second innings at 72 for three chasing a near impossible 608.&nbsp;

In the following over from Akash, the dangerous Harry Brook was trapped in front with a delivery that hit the crack and seamed back in sharply. Brook could not do much about that. It can be assumed that the medium pacer has sealed his place for the Lord&rsquo;s Test with a stellar use of the new ball at Edgbaston. Krishna from the other end could not strike but performed the holding role effectively.&nbsp;
Ravindra Jadeja was brought in after the first hour of and he got the ball to turn from the rough instantly, posing problems for Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith. Unlike Headingley, Jadeja tried to take some pace off his deliveries and it did turn off the rough. The England captain however was able to get some much needed runs.&nbsp;
He got four boundaries off Siraj including from a pull and extra cover drive off Siraj. Realising that there was little point in just defending, Stokes decided to sweep Jadeja.&nbsp;
Going into day five, either an India win or draw were probable results with England effectively conceding that there were not going to go for the mammoth target despite only drawing one game in the last three years.

India pacer Akash Deep was on Thursday ruled out of the the fifth and final Test against Australia starting here on Friday owing to a stiff back.
Akash had taken five wickets from two Tests in Brisbane and Melbourne so far. He was a bit unlucky to not get more as multiple catches were dropped off his bowling during the two games.
" Akash Deep is out with back issue," India coach Gautam Gambhir said in the pre-match press conference here.
Gambhir said the playing XI would be decided after taking a look at the pitch.
The 28-year-old right-arm pacer bowled a total of 87.5 overs across two Test matches and his niggle could be a result of the heavier than usual workload he has endured.
The hard Australian grounds can cause knee, ankle and back issues for pacers.
Either Harshit Rana or Prasidh Krishna could make it to the eleven in place of Akash.

India pace bowler Akash Deep dedicated his splendid three-wicket burst on Test debut to his father who died in 2015, and said he is happy that he has achieved his dad's dream of "becoming something in life".
Akash Deep's father Ramji Singh succumbed to paralysis and within six months, the cricketer lost his elder brother while being taken to a hospital in Varanasi.
"I thought I have to do something after I lost my dad and brother in one year, then I stepped out to play cricket. I had nothing to lose and everything to win," Akash Deep told reporters after day one of the fourth Test against England.

England went on to lose half their side for 112 at lunch on Friday.
"I dedicate this to my father because it was his dream that his son does something in life. I couldn't do anything in his life (when he was alive), so this performance is for my father.
"Every cricketer has one dream, to play for India in Tests. That was also my dream," said the Bengal pacer who hails from Baddi village in Rohtas district of Bihar, about 300km from Ranchi.
"We didn't know about cricket while growing up; cricket was not there where I come from. I played tennis cricket after 2007 and got to know about cricket after 2016. Since then, I have been following (Mohammed) Shami bhai and (South Africa's Kagiso) Rabada.
"I got my Test cap at a place which is near to my village (in Bihar) as well as Bengal from where I play. Bengal supported me well. In my journey, my family played a big role.
"My family is also here. No doubt, it's an emotional feeling but there was just one thing going on in my mind -- how to contribute to the team." On getting his Test cap from India coach Rahul Dravid, Akash Deep said, "He (Dravid) heard my story and I was very emotional (at the moment). I was just told to keep it simple, do whatever I have been doing (so far). It was a big help as, at this level, you sometimes get confused." Akash Deep also said that ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the fourth Test, too gave him advice on how to bowl in international cricket.
"Bumrah bhai told me that at the international level, one should bowl slightly back-of-a-length (deliveries) because batters tend to chase the ball. So, that was at the back of my mind and the plan was to bowl the right line and length," Akash Deep told the host broadcasters earlier on Friday.
On his journey from making first-class debut in December 2019, he said, "I don't know what I did, but whenever I used to play a match, I used to think that this is the last match of my life, and whenever I achieved success in a given match, I tried to incorporate that (method) in the next game." England rode on Joe Root's patient unbeaten century to recover well in the post-lunch session to end the opening day at 302/7.
"At the start, bowlers got some help but after that when the wicket dried up, the ball also became very soft. The pitch is pretty slow. We are able to manage it (bowling) but I feel that as a bowling unit, we will have to focus on our line and length, keep it tight. If we make that effort we will get success.
"The bounce is the same but, I feel, we can keep the length away because the ball is coming onto the bat easily. it was a good wicket today." Akash Deep smashed Zak Crawley's off-stump in his second over of the day only for the umpire to signal a no-ball.
"I felt very bad. Not because it was my first international wicket. He (Zak Crawley) was playing very well, he was hitting the ball and I was feeling bad that the team should not suffer because of me. But, thankfully, he got out soon after," added Akash Deep.
