Ajit Pawar, vying for control of the Malegaon Sugar Mill, faces a rival faction led by Sharad Pawar in a complex political drama involving Maharashtra's cooperative dynamics.

After Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar entered the election fray for the Malegaon Cooperative Sugar Mill in Baramati, the Nationalist Congress Party (SP) led by his estranged uncle Sharad Pawar, too, has jumped into the poll arena and floated a rival panel.
Addressing party workers and also members of the sugar mill from half a dozen villages in Baramati taluka, who form the electoral college (voters) for the poll, Sharad Pawar on Wednesday cautioned that allurements may be offered during the campaign, and urged them not to fall prey to them.
Election to the 21-member board of directors of the cooperative sugar mill in Baramati, the home turf of the Pawar family, is scheduled on June 22 and results will be announced on June 24.
Ajit Pawar, who is among 90 candidates in the fray, is contesting election to a cooperative sugar mill after more than four decades. He is a candidate of the Nilkantheshwar panel, which currently holds power in the sugar mill.
Candidates are contesting the poll under the banner of different panels and not on party tickets.
Besides the Nilkantheshwar panel and the Sahakar Bachav panel, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) has entered the fray after floating the 'Baliraja Sahakar Bachav' panel, making the contest triangular. Sharad Pawar is not directly in the fray.
The Baliraja Sahakar Bachav panel has fielded 20 candidates and the Nilkantheshwar panel 21.
Speaking to reporters after addressing the voters, the senior Pawar said if people associated with the NCP (SP) had been taken along (by the Ajit Pawar-backed ruling panel), there would have been no need for his party to float a rival panel for the polls.
"Even today, we do not wish to take such a position. However, the party was compelled to take a stand due to circumstances that arose. Had an approach of taking everyone along been taken, this situation (floating rival panel) could have been avoided. But let bygones be bygones," said the former Union minister.
Before the 2023 split in the NCP, only one panel (Nilkantheshwar) represented the Pawar family on the board of the sugar mill.
Sharad Pawar asserted he does not see this disagreement as a long-term issue (between rival NCP groups).
"It is limited to this particular election, which involves only 19,000 voters -- members of the mill who are eligible to vote," he said.
Addressing party workers ahead of the poll, the senior Pawar insisted that while working for cooperatives in Maharashtra, he never brought politics into the key sector which has deep roots and wide network in the state.
"In the poll, some panels are contesting. In democracy, everyone has that right. I have no complaints about it. My only appeal is that after the poll, emphasis should be given to solving issues faced by people here," the veteran politician said.
The senior Pawar highlighted the pollution in the Nira river caused due to flow of wastes generated by sugar mills and said he was committed to address this issue as it is causing health hazards.
"During the poll, some people might misuse power and offer allurements, but ensure not to sell your votes, come what may," he maintained.

Maharashtra&rsquo;s Cabinet can accommodate up to 43 ministers, including the Chief Minister. However, portfolio allocation has proven challenging due to competing demands from the alliance partners.

BJP&rsquo;s Strategy on Key Ministries Sources suggest that the BJP aims to retain control over pivotal portfolios such as Home, Urban Development, and Rural Development, leaving fewer key ministries for allies. BJP is expected to keep 21-22 ministerial positions, including the CM&rsquo;s post, while allocating only select ministries such as Revenue, Housing, and Public Works to Shiv Sena and NCP. Four to five Cabinet positions may remain vacant.

Allies&rsquo; Demands Shiv Sena is reportedly adamant about securing the Home Department, which the BJP is unwilling to cede. The party is also vying for key portfolios like Urban Development, School Education, and Transport. Meanwhile, NCP is negotiating for significant roles in the Cabinet.

We did try to include NCP right now, but they insisted on cabinet portfolio," the senior BJP leader asserted.

Cracks seem to be widening in the BJP-led Mayahuti alliance in Maharashtra following poor performance in the Lok Sabha election.
If reports are to be believed, more than a dozen MLAs from the Ajit Pawar camp are said to be in touch with Sharad Pawar camp.
Grandnephew of Sharad Pawar, Rohit, told the Times of India outlet that nearly 18 to 19 MLAs are interested in returning to the party.
Speaking on the development, NCP leader of the Sharad Pawar faction, Jayant Patil, said, &ldquo;The usage of my phone has increased...I cannot give an answer today but I am telling you that things are different. The right decision is taken at the right time&hellip;"
The development comes as five of the NCP MLAs did not show up for a meeting chaired by Ajit on 6th of June.&nbsp;

Ajit Pawar, who is NCP national president, party working president Praful Patel and state unit chief Sunil Tatkare, who retained Raigad seat, were present at the meeting.
Of the 41 MLAs in the party, some five were absent, PTI reported quoting sources, adding that deputy speaker Narhari Zirwal is abroad while others were unwell.
These sources said the leaders and MLAs discussed the prevailing political situation as well as the party's performance in the four Lok Sabha seats it contested in the state.&nbsp;

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar on Monday released his party's manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections, highlighting that it will support the demand for a caste-based census, an issue its ally BJP has been side-stepping.
Addressing a gathering here, the deputy chief minister said the NCP will also demand the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award, for the late former Maharashtra chief minister and defence minister Yashvantrao Chavan.
"Our party believes in the right to live as a human irrespective of caste, creed and religion. It believes in equality and unity. The NCP has faith in social reformer Sane Guruji's quote, 'The true religion is to offer love to the world.' We must bring the deprived and backward sections of society into the mainstream. We will demand for a caste-based census," the manifesto stated.
Pawar said once the party is voted to power, it will demand a caste-based census.
The NCP's former ally, Congress, has been demanding a nationwide caste-based census, while the BJP has been finding ways to counter it.
The NCP is a constituent of the Mahayuti alliance comprising the Shiv Sena and the BJP.
The other demands of the party include getting semi-English status to Urdu medium schools in the state and a minimum support price for farm produce, he said.
The NCP chief also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's contribution to the country in the last ten years and his leadership.
"Modi's leadership will ensure our victory in the elections. There is no one from the opposition who can compete with him. He is the face of NDA," he said.&nbsp;

Sunetra, the daughter-in-law, managed to stay out of politics for a long time to not get caught in the crosshairs of the Pawar battle. However, now the tables have turned as she is an MP candidate from Baramati.&nbsp;
On April 9, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar sought support for his wife Sunetra in the Lok Sabha polls. He told the Baramati voters that they had elected his uncle Sharad Pawar's daughter three times, but now they should elect his daughter-in-law.&nbsp;

Ajit Pawar's faction NCP leader Sunil Tatkare called the contest a "clash of ideologies" rather than a mere family feud.
"This is a lucky day for me. I thank Narendra Modiji, Amit Shah, and all leaders of Mahayuti (Shiv Sena, BJP, and NCP) for considering me capable of fighting the election," Sunetra Pawar told a Marathi news channel, according to PTI news agency.
"Voters have taken the fight in their hands," she said when asked about facing off with Supriya Sule.
Baramati is considered the stronghold of the Pawar family, with Sharad Pawar winning the Maharashtra Assembly polls from Baramati for the first time in 1967.&nbsp;
Later, Supriya Sule took the baton and has been representing the seat since 2009.
Even before Sunetra Pawar's name was formally announced, she had started campaigning and meeting various social groups, according to PTI news agency.
To guard his home turf, Sharad Pawar recently visited the family of Congress legislator Sangram Thopte and met his father Anantrao Thopte, an old rival.
NCP (SP), part of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), also comprising Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress, will contest 10 seats in Maharashtra, which sends 48 members to Lok Sabha.

Ajit Pawar-led faction was declared as the real Nationalist Congress Party by Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar. The speaker also refused to disqualify the 41 MLAs who rebelled against Sharad Pawar in June last year, which eventually split the party into two factions.
&ldquo;All the petitions seeking disqualification of MLAs are rejected,&rdquo; Narwekar said, reading out the ruling at the legislature complex here.
The disqualification petitions were filed by the rival factions led by Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar after Ajit Pawar joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government in Maharashtra in July 2023 along with his followers, and was sworn in as deputy Chief Minister. Questioning party founder Sharad Pawar&rsquo;s decisions or defying his wishes did not amount to defection but it was only internal dissent, Narwekar said in the ruling, adding that the tenth schedule of the Constitution, which deals with anti-defection provisions, was misused in this case.
Party leadership can not use tenth schedule to stifle dissent of large number of members by threatening to disqualify them, Narwekar said, reports PTI news agency.
The events that unfolded in the NCP (in July 2023) were clearly in the nature of intraparty dissent, the ruling held.
The Ajit Pawar faction had &ldquo;overwhelming&rdquo; legislative majority when the party split, the Speaker noted.
Decisions of the Ajit Pawar faction constituted the `will of the NCP political party&rsquo;, he said.
Narwekar&rsquo;s ruling followed the decision of the Election Commission last week to hold the Ajit Pawar-led party to be the real NCP.
Reacting to the Speaker&rsquo;s decision, Supriya Sule, MP of the NCP &ndash; Sharadchandra Pawar party, said it was a &ldquo;copy-paste&rdquo; of Narwekar&rsquo;s earlier decision in the Shiv Sena disqualification case
Before the split, the NCP had 53 MLAs.&nbsp;

In an order, the Election Commission (EC) also allotted the NCP symbol 'Wall Clock' to the group led by Ajit Pawar.
The decision followed the laid-out tests of maintainability of such a petition which included tests of aims and objectives of party constitution, test of party constitution and tests of majority both organisational and legislative, the commission said.
"The test of majority in the legislative wing found favour in this circumstance of the case, where both groups have found to be working outside the party constitution and the organisational elections," the poll authority observed.
The EC made a concession to the group led by Sharad Pawar by allowing it a "one-time option" to claim a name for its political outfit and provide three preferences by Wednesday afternoon in view of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
Ajit Pawar had walked away with a majority of NCP MLAs in July last year and supported the BJP-Shiv Sena government led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in Maharashtra.&nbsp;

As several opposition parties make efforts to build unity amongst themselves, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar met uncle Sharad Pawar on July 17 and urged him to keep NCP united. This was Ajit's second meeting with the NCP supremo in as many days.&nbsp;
Rajya Sabha MP Praful Patel, who was part of the meeting, said he and Ajit Pawar would attend the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting in Delhi on Tuesday.
"In today's meeting with Sharad Pawar, we again asked him to ensure that the NCP stays united," Patel said.
Those MLAs (of the Ajit Pawar faction) who could not meet Sharad Pawar during the meeting held on Sunday were present on this occasion, Patel told reporters.
However, Clyde Crasto, NCP national spokesperson, called the meeting a "failed attempt" and said "a lot of water has flown under the bridge of trust".

"Yet another failed attempt by the breakaway NCP group (referring to Ajit Pawar faction) to show the people of Maharashtra that they can pacify Sharad Pawar Saheb," Crasto said.
"It will not make any difference because a lot of water has flown under the bridge of trust. What this group has done cannot be rectified now," Crasto, part of the Sharad Pawar faction, said.
On July 2, Ajit Pawar and eight MLAs, including Chhagan Bhujbal, Dilip Walse Patil and Hasan Mushrif, had joined the Eknath Shinde government.
Ajit Pawar was made deputy chief minister, while the eight MLAs were sworn in as ministers.
On Sunday, the deputy CM and some ministers from his camp had met Sharad Pawar in YB Chavan Centre.
Talking to reporters after the meeting on Sunday, Praful Patel had said they made a request to Sharad Pawar to keep the party united.
The NCP founder listened to them quietly but didn't give any reaction, Patel had said.
He had added the group did not take Sharad Pawar's prior appointment but came to the Chavan centre directly after they came to know that he was present there.

The Working Committee of the Nationalist Congress Party approved the decision of Sharad Pawar of expelling Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare who joined hands with NDA, party leader PC Chacko said after NCP's National Executive meeting.&nbsp;
The committee passed eight resolutions in total.&nbsp;
The resolutions passed by the working committee include a stand against the undemocratic and unconstitutional actions of the BJP government and the misuse of government agencies against the Opposition.
It also condemned the central government policies resulting in spiralling inflation, unemployment and women's plight.
Ajit Pawar and eight of his colleagues joined the Eknath Shinde government on July 2. While Pawar was made deputy chief minister, the others were sworn in as ministers.
Several of them have been accused of corruption and are being investigated by central probe agencies.

Amid a tug-of-war between Sharad Pawar and nephew Ajit Pawar for control of the Nationalist Congress Party, Sharad Pawar's grand-nephew claimed that Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly elections may be held ahead of schedule.
NCP's Rohit Pawar on July 5 said, "Four days ago, officials received instructions to begin checking EVMs or start manufacturing process."
"This shows that Lok Sabha elections may be held in December 2023. Maharashtra Assembly election, which is slated for October 2024, may be held alongside Lok Sabha polls," he added.
"The main reason is Karnataka (election result). BJP's loss in Karnataka may reduce its numbers in Lok Sabha," Rohit explained.

Day after Ajit Pawar defected and joined the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government along with eight MLA, Sharad Pawar's NCP has taken action against party leaders who attended Ajit Pawar's swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhawan on Sunday, as per reports.
As per India Today, Akola District President Vijay Deshmukh and Mumbai Division Working President Narendra Rane and state minister Shivajirao Garje have been expelled from the party for participating in Ajit Pawar's swearing-in.

The Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena on July 3 claimed that NCP leader Ajit Pawar has been inducted into the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in Maharashtra to replace Eknath Shinde as Chief Minister.
In its mouthpiece 'Saamana', Sena (UBT) said that Ajit Pawar has not joined the ruling alliance just for the Deputy Chief Minister's post. The editorial piece claimed that CM Shinde and his followers who had split the Shiv Sena would soon be disqualified from the Assembly.
It said when Shinde and other MLAs left the Shiv Sena (last year), they blamed the party president and (then) chief minister Uddhav Thackeray for not controlling then-finance minister Ajit Pawar who had taken immense control over fund disbursement and sanctioning work orders. "The primary reason according to the rebel MLAs was 'we left the Shiv Sena because of the NCP'," the editorial said.
What will they do now? During the swearing-in ceremony (of Ajit Pawar on Sunday), the expressions on their faces (of Shinde bloc members) made it evident that their future is dark, it claimed.

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said "certain things were done" after the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections to expose the BJP and show how far it can go to gain power.
The veteran politician was responding to reporters' questions about BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis's claim that Pawar had agreed to form government with the BJP but backed out at the last moment.
Reacting to Pawar's latest statement, Fadnavis said he was glad that the NCP chief finally "admitted the truth", and more such disclosures would follow.
It was true that BJP leaders had met the NCP leadership and had discussions on several things, Pawar said here.
"But he (Fadnavis) himself said yesterday that I changed the decision (to go with the BJP) two days earlier (before the swearing-in) ...If I had changed the decision, what was the reason for going ahead and taking the oath of office, and that too so discreetly in the early morning," the NCP chief asked.
"Had they (Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar) had the NCP's support, wouldn't the government have survived? The government fell, and he had to resign," Pawar further said.
"Certain things were done (at that time) to expose before the public how far they (BJP) can go for power....There was a need to bring out that they could not live without power," the NCP chief said cryptically.
His father-in-law (Test player Sadu Shinde) was a googly bowler, and he himself (Pawar) was the chairman of the ICC, he said, adding, "so, without playing cricket, I knew where and when to bowl a googly." Pawar also said that instead of making unnecessary statements, Fadnavis, who is also home minister, should focus on ensuring women's security in the state.
Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis in a recent interview to a news channel claimed that Pawar had agreed to form government with the BJP in 2019. But the NCP supremo backed off after three-four days, he claimed.
After the 2019 Assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (then undivided) snapped ties with the long-term ally BJP over the issue of sharing the chief ministerial post.
Later, Fadnavis was sworn in as chief minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar as his deputy in a hush-hush early morning ceremony at the Raj Bhawan, but the government lasted only 80 hours.
Thackeray subsequently formed alliance with the NCP and Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi government (MVA) which collapsed last June.
Reacting to Pawar's statements, Fadnavis told reporters on Thursday that he was very happy that Pawar had to tell the truth finally.
"I feel my googly has resulted in the truth coming out, but it is only a partial truth. I will bring out the remaining part of the truth,&rdquo; the BJP leader said.
It was Pawar's own nephew Ajit Pawar who "got clean bowled" due to the NCP chief's actions in 2019, he said, adding, "I will slowly bring out the truth from him (Pawar) only.&rdquo;&nbsp;

NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who took oath as the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, on Sunday said his party decided to become part of the Eknath Shinde government for the development of the country, and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
Maintaining that there was no split in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), he said they would contest all the future elections on the NCP's name and symbol.
All the elected representatives (of the party) have supported the decision to join the government, Pawar said.
Defending his decision to share power with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he said, "If we can go with the Shiv Sena, then we can go with the BJP as well. The same thing happened in Nagaland as well." "Overall and comprehensive development was taken into account. We have a vast experience of the administration, we can utilise it for the good," he said.
The cabinet portfolios will be announced in a couple of days and we will immediately start working on it, Pawar said.
Pawar took oath as the deputy chief minister on Sunday, while eight MLAs of the party took oath as ministers in the Shinde-led government earlier in the day.&nbsp;
