Veteran India batter Ajinkya Rahane on Thursday stepped down from his position as Mumbai captain ahead of the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, saying it is the right time to groom a new leader.
The 37-year-old, who has amassed 14000 runs in 201 first-class matches, however, will continue to play as a batter in the team. The Ranji season begins on October 15 and Mumbai will be up against Jammu and Kashmir in their opening game.
"Captaining and winning the championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour," Rahane wrote on his 'X' account.
"With the new domestic season ahead, I believe it is the right time to groom a new leader, and hence, I have decided not to continue in the captaincy role.
"I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player, and will continue my journey with MCA to help us win more trophies, looking forward to the season," he added.
Under his captaincy, Mumbai clinched the Ranji Trophy title in the 2023&ndash;24 season with a victory over Vidarbha in the final.
He also guided the team to triumph in the Irani Cup 2024&ndash;25, overcoming the Rest of India (ROI) side.
Before these red-ball achievements, he led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in 2022&ndash;23, cementing his reputation as one of the finest captains in Indian domestic cricket.
Rahane, who famously captained India to a Test series win in Australia in 2021, is not on the national selectors' radar anymore but he remains determined to make a national comeback.
He has played 85 Tests for India with the last one coming against the West Indies back in July 2023. He has also featured in 90 ODIs and 20 T20 Internationals.
Rahane also reinvented his game in the shortest format, eventually leading to his elevation as Kolkata Knight Riders skipper in IPL 2025.
Rahane and another senior batter Cheteshwar Pujara are continuing to play in hope of making an India comeback.

Month after rumours about a rift between them dominated headlines, out-of-favour India batter Ajinkya Rahane is backing the flamboyant Yashasvi Jaiswal to shine on the tour of England thanks to his ability to perform multiple roles as opener.
The five-match Tests series begins at the Headingley from Friday.
"Personally, I'm really looking forward to seeing Yashasvi Jaiswal do well because opening the batting in England is really important," Rahane said in a video on his YouTube channel.
"He has the game for it &mdash; he can control one end and also go on the attack when needed. So I'm really looking forward to seeing Jaiswal perform in England." There were reports in April that Mumbai teammates Jaiswal and Rahane had a fall out during the last Ranji Trophy season after the side's defeat to Jammu and Kashmir.
While Rahane last played for India two years ago against the West Indies, Jaiswal has been the team's first-choice opener since making his Test debut in the Caribbean in July 2023.
Rahane, who led an injury-plagued Indian team to a memorable Test series win in Australia in 2020-21, has also placed his bets on lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah to live up to his expectations with Mohammed Siraj too chipping in with plenty of wickets.
"I also want to see Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah do well because, as senior campaigners, they have the responsibility to lead the attack and pick up wickets for the team," Rahane said.
"We all know Bumrah is an excellent bowler and a proven wicket-taker, but I'd like to see him take that extra responsibility and help the team get through challenging situations, because winning a Test series in England is always very special." The last time India won a Test rubber in England was way back in 2007, only the third such instance (after 1971 and 1986) in that part of the world since start of bilateral engagements in 1932.
Shubman Gill will lead the Indian team in England and Rahane said the young skipper will live up to the challenge of making the transition from T20 captaincy to Test leadership.
"I think it's going to be a challenging task for Shubman because in Test cricket I always believe you have to be proactive as a captain. I'm sure Shubman will do well, but it will take time because captaining in T20s and ODIs is completely different.
"In the Test format, sometimes you have to stay one or two steps ahead of your opponents, talk to your bowlers, and plan things with them. So, it's going to be a challenging task for him, but I&rsquo;m sure he will do well as both a skipper and a batter," Rahane said in the video.

Rahane said while the bowling unit largely met expectations, the failure of three-four main batters derailed their campaign. KKR's season ended with a crushing 110-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad here on Monday.
"It's just that for us as a team, three-four guys were out of form. Where we faltered was at the batting end. As a batting unit, collectively, we couldn't do well," Rahane said during the post-match media interaction.
"Unfortunately, two-three players were going through that phase for us. And that was the reason we couldn't do well...But again, they are pretty much experienced enough to handle this situation.
"I'm sure they will come back stronger next year...Rinku (Singh), Raman (Ramandeep Singh), all the players, they will learn from the mistakes and come back stronger." Venkatesh Iyer (average 20.28), Andre Russell (18.55), Rinku (29.42), and Ramandeep (9.40), who played key roles in KKR's 2024 title triumph, failed to replicate their form this season, hurting the team's prospects.
On Sunday, Sunrisers Hyderabad piled a massive 278/3 -- the third-highest total in IPL history -- on the back of Heinrich Klaasen's 37-ball century, before bowling out KKR for 168.
However, earlier setbacks such as the loss to Punjab Kings, while chasing just 112, and a narrow four-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants while chasing 239, proved more damaging for KKR's campaign.
They also had two rain-marred games and ultimately ended up with five wins from 14 matches.
"See, this season, I think for us, (it has been) kind of an up and down. We had our moments. We had our chances and I said that earlier also during those matches, as a unit, we didn't play well, really well," Rahane said.
"But again, this format, that's how it goes, you know...the Punjab Kings game, LSG game and also the CSK game, I thought those two-three games could have been slightly different.
"It's not easy when you win a championship and, you know, come into the next season, defending the championship, it's not that easy. As a team, we tried our best. What I can say is, we'll come back really stronger next year." Rahane said the pressure of expectations may have affected the batters' performance.
"When you have a couple of good seasons, as an individual, you put a lot of expectation on yourself. You put pressure on yourself. And I feel that was the case for most of the batters, to prove, you know, that how good I am. And it is completely natural.
"I'm sure our players, will learn from the mistakes. It's a lot to learn from this season, as a team. Not for any particular individual, but for everyone. So many learnings from this season."
Iyer gets Rahane's support
One of the biggest talking points was KKR's decision to re-sign Venkatesh Iyer using the Right To Match card after releasing him, at a hefty price of Rs 23.75 crore, making him their third-most expensive player.
But Rahane dismissed any suggestions that the price tag may have impacted the player's performance.
"Someone's not going to work doubly harder if he's getting Rs 20 plus crore, or someone's not going to work less harder when he's getting one, two, three crore, whatever it is.
"...your attitude doesn't change on the field. You know, that's what matters. As a player, you only focus on the controllable things. And I felt Venkatesh Iyer was actually focusing on the controllable things," he reasoned.
"I thought his attitude was fantastic. One off season, that can happen to any player. So it's not about the price tag. I don't think he was thinking about his price tag at all. But just one of those seasons that we had to go through."
Praise for the bowlers
Rahane praised the bowling unit for its consistency across the season, highlighting the performances of Harshit Rana, Chakravarthy, Vaibhav Arora, and veteran Sunil Narine.
"The wickets were really good for the batters. But I thought, bowling throughout the season, as a bowling unit, we did really well...all the bowlers who have played, their thinking was really clear," he said.

When asked about the Indian team without Pujara, Rahane, and Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit had a brief slip of the tongue during the post-match press conference. "No, no, absolutely [I will miss them around]. Look, they have so much experience and have won so many matches for India. So, when you look around and they're not there... By the way, Ajinkya Rahane hasn't retired, aap mere ko marwaoge yar [you guys are going to get me in trouble]," Rohit remarked, laughing.
Rohit further clarified that the doors for Pujara and Rahane to return to the Test team are still open. "I&rsquo;m speaking as if all three have retired [chuckles]. Pujara hasn&rsquo;t announced his retirement. You mentioned all their names together, so I said that. They're not here right now, but I don&rsquo;t know, they can still come back, the door is open for them," he added.
Pujara and Rahane have been integral to India&rsquo;s middle order for over a decade. Pujara has played 103 Tests, accumulating 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, with 19 centuries and 35 fifties. His highest score is 206*. Rahane, meanwhile, has featured in 85 Tests, scoring 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, with 12 centuries and 26 fifties. His best score is 188.
However, both players&rsquo; performances have dipped significantly since India&rsquo;s historic victory at The Gabba in January 2021, which was pivotal to their series win in Australia. Since that iconic triumph, Pujara has played 22 more Tests, managing only 1,084 runs at a below-par average of 29.29, with just one century and seven fifties. Rahane's form has been similarly underwhelming, scoring only 606 runs in his last 16 Tests at an average of 22.44, with four half-centuries.
Despite his recent struggles in Tests, Rahane had a standout performance in IPL 2023 with Chennai Super Kings, scoring 326 runs in 11 innings at an impressive average of 32.60 and a strike rate of 172.48. His strong IPL form could potentially keep him in the mix longer than Pujara, who hasn&rsquo;t played in the IPL since 2014.
Pujara, however, has an exceptional first-class record, having scored 19,812 runs in 258 matches at an average of 52.00, including 61 centuries and 77 half-centuries, with a highest score of 352. His impressive domestic form keeps him in the conversation for a Test return, should the opportunity arise.

Rahane, a former India captain, recently made a successful comeback to the Indian team during the World Test Championship final against Australia earlier this month.
Rahane had inked the deal with Leicestershire back in January and was supposed to play eight first class games and also the entire Royal London Cup (domestic 50 over competition) between June to September, after the completion of his IPL stint with Chennai Super Kings.
However, the plan had to be shelved since he made a comeback to Indian Test team and couldn't join his county side immediately after the IPL was over.
"Ajinkya, after the two Tests in West Indies (which is supposed to end on July 24), is supposed to fly directly to England and join Leicestershire for the remainder of the season. He will play Royal London Cup in August and a possible four County games in September as he is unlikely to be a part of white ball scheme of things," a BCCI source in know of things, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
This will be Rahane's second county stint, having played for Hampshire in the 2019 season when he was dropped from the 50 over World Cup side.
Rahane, who scored 89 in Indian first innings in WTC final, has just completed 5,000 runs in the traditional format in 83 Tests.
While most of the top Indian players will shift their focus on 50 over cricket, Rahane will get more red-ball game time through the month of September, before he is back in India for the full fledged Indian domestic season, followed by a tour of South Africa in December.

One man who didn't get the amount of credit he deserved following India's historic Test series win in Australia in 2020-21 was undoubtedly Ajinkya Rahane.
After being 36 all out in the 1st Test in Adelaide to Virat Kohli leaving after that, Team India was in a muddle.
The responsibility of an improbable comeback fell on Rahane's shoulders and boy, did he make a statement.
India bounced back to win the series 2-1 and it was regarded as the best fightback in cricket history.
But during this time, Rahane the batter wasn't living up to the expectations. The writing was on the wall and Jinx lost his spot in Tests after India's 2-1 Test series loss in South Africa in January 2022.
In the 12 months before being dropped, Rahane's average fell to exactly 20.
But what changed in just over a year that made Rahane a frontrunner in India's middle order for the most important Test of them all?
Firstly, let's see how Rahane's possible replacements performed when Jinx was out of India's Test set-up.
Shreyas Iyer grabbed his opportunity with both hands with a hundred in his very first Test innings and performed exceedingly well for a while. But unfortunately, he picked up an injury and had to undergo surgery. No one knows when he'll return.
Suryakumar Yadav was brought into the Test team following an exceptional show with the bat in limited-overs cricket but he had a forgettable debut. Sky was out for 8 in the only innings he played and was dropped after that.
Rishabh Pant was India's game-changer in Tests but he had an accident which ruled him out indefinitely.
During this time, a few other batters also went through a lean patch. While KL Rahul underperformed in whites and was later sidelined due to injury, Mayank Agarwal didn't last past the Sri Lanka series in 2022.
When all of this was happening, one batter who made a strong case for a comeback was Ajinkya Rahane.
IPL 2023 saw a different Rahane bat for the Chennai Super Kings. After his initial exploits in the cash-rich league, the BCCI named the 34-year-old in the World Test Championship squad.
But it wasn't because of his fiery knocks in the IPL but the foundation of his comeback was laid sometime back.
The former No. 5 batter for India had a great outing in Ranji Trophy, where he scored 2 hundreds and averaged almost 58.
It was followed by a double ton in the Duleep Trophy. Clearly, the board was left with no other option but to bring Jinx back into the Test set-up.
Rahane's comeback might be circumstantial but the experience he brings to the side might be a blessing in disguise for the Indian team.
Life has now come full circle for Jinx. The man who led India's resurgence against the Aussies back in 2020 now stands against the same opposition 2 years later, where he'll try to end India's decade-long ICC trophy drought.

Suresh Raina still stands atop with his 16-ball 50 that he hit against Punjab in 2014.&nbsp; MS Dhoni revealed that he asked Ajinkya to not take stress and that the team will back him. 'Me and Jinks spoke at the start of the season and I told him to play to his strengths, use your ability to manipulate the fields', Dhoni added. Currently, there are only three Indian players in the A+ category - Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma &amp; Jasprit Bumrah. While there are 5 players in the A category - R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul &amp; Mohd Shami.

Out of favour Team India Test specialists, Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma, are expected to face the axe from BCCI central contracts list during the board's Apex Council meeting which is to be held on December 21.&nbsp;
One of the main agendas of the meeting is the 'Retainership contract' for both Indian men and women cricketers.
Wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha will also be removed from the contracts list as he was specifically told at the start of the year that he won't be selected for India again.
Meanwhile, there are others who will most likely earn promotions, namely opener Shubman Gill &amp; World No. 1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav, who are currently in the 'C' category.
Hardik Pandya, who many expect could take the reins from Rohit Sharma in T20s, is also expected to be promoted from Grade C to B, only a year after his demotion from Grade A to C, when he wasn't playing regularly for Team India.
An A+ contract offers Rs 7 crore, Group A Rs 5 crore, Group B Rs 3 crore and Rs Group C offers Rs 1 crore to the cricketers as an annual retainer fee.

In an unusual act, West Zone captain Ajinjya Rahane asked his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal to leave the field for excessive sledging. 
The situation unfolded on the fifth day of the Duleep Trophy final in Coimbatore. 
Jaiswal was consistently throwing verbal volleys to South Zone batter Ravi Teja while fielding close to the bat. After Teja's complaint, Rahane spoke to Yashasvi but the youngster appeared to be animated when the captain had a word with him.

Then, Rahane ordered Yashasvi to leave the field and west Zone fielded with 10 men only for seven over before 20-year-old Jaiswal returned to the field.

Reacting to the incident after the match, Rahane said that he believes in respecting the opponents, umpires and match officials and that certain incidents need to be treated in a certain manner.

West Zone won the 2022 Duleep Trophy after a massive 294 run win over South Zone on the final day of the 5th test in Coimbatore on Sunday.
The Ajinkya Rahane-led side put up a massive total of 585 for four in their second innings, courtesy a 265 by Yasashvi Jaiswal and 127 by Sarfraz Khan. South Zone on the other hand, was bowled out for 234 in 71.2 overs. Major contributor with the ball was spinner Shams Mulani who had a decent spell of 4/51 on the final day.
