IATA Director General Willie Walsh said India is witnessing significant growth and that there is a clear recognition that growth is also dependent on air connectivity.

The global airline industry is projected to report a net profit of USD 36.6 billion in 2025, slightly higher than expected this year, helped by lower oil prices and cost control, IATA said on Tuesday.
Passenger numbers are expected to rise 6.7 per cent to 5.2 billion next year compared to 2024. In 2025, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects the industry's revenue to cross the USD 1 trillion mark for the first time to USD 1.007 trillion, which will be an increase of 4.4 per cent compared to 2024.
While the operating profit is estimated at USD 67.5 billion, expenses are anticipated to reach USD 940 billion next year.
At a briefing here, IATA Director General Willie Walsh said India is witnessing significant growth and that there is a clear recognition that growth is also dependent on air connectivity.
China and India are among the fastest-growing domestic aviation markets, he added.
"Net profit is expected to be USD 36.6 billion in 2025 for a 3.6 per cent net profit margin. That is a slight improvement from the expected USD 31.5 billion net profit in 2024 (3.3 per cent net profit margin).
"Average net profit per passenger is expected to be USD 7 (below the USD 7.9 high in 2023 but an improvement from USD 6.4 in 2024)," IATA said in its financial outlook for 2025.
In the Asia Pacific region, a slight improvement in profitability is likely next year on the back of strong demand and increasing load factors.
Globally, IATA said the average airfare, including ancillaries, is expected to be USD 380, which is 1.8 per cent lower than 2024.
"We are expecting airlines to deliver a global profit of USD 36.6 billion in 2025.
"This will be hard earned as airlines take advantage of lower oil prices while keeping load factors above 83 per cent, tightly controlling costs, investing in decarbonisation, and managing the return to more normal growth levels following the extraordinary pandemic recovery," Walsh said.
In 2025, jet fuel price is expected to average USD 87 per barrel compared to USD 99 per barrel in 2024. This is based on a jet fuel crack spread of USD 12 per barrel and a crude oil price of USD 75 per barrel (Brent).
"Airlines' cumulative fuel spend is expected to be USD 248 billion, a decline of 4.8 per cent despite a 6 per cent rise in the amount of fuel expected to be consumed (107 billion gallons). Fuel is expected to account for 26.4 per cent of operating costs in 2025, down from 28.9 per cent in 2024," IATA said.
At the same time, Walsh said there are supply chain challenges, infrastructure deficiencies, onerous regulations and a rising tax burden.
IATA also mentioned that net profitability will be squeezed as airlines are expected to exhaust their tax losses carry forwards from the pandemic era, leading to an increase in tax rates in 2025.

This significant increase is attributed to Indian carriers' expansion plans, including deploying more aircraft, opening new routes, and leveraging their strong domestic connectivity compared to foreign competitors.
CRISIL predicts that the business profiles of Indian airlines will strengthen as they capture a larger share of the more profitable international traffic. The shift towards international leisure travel post-pandemic, driven by increasing disposable incomes and eased visa requirements, has contributed to this growth. Additionally, government initiatives to boost tourism are expected to further stimulate inbound traffic.
International passenger traffic in India has rebounded strongly, reaching around 70 million in fiscal year 2024 from a low of 10 million during the pandemic-hit fiscal year 2021. This resurgence has accelerated the upward trajectory of Indian carriers' market share.
Indian airlines have strategically added 55 new international routes in the past 15 months, surpassing 300 routes in total. These expansions include direct flights from additional cities to popular destinations in the United States, Europe, and Australia, reducing travel time and layovers.
Furthermore, Indian carriers are enhancing short- and medium-haul international routes and forming codeshare agreements with global airlines to offer seamless connectivity to passengers. CRISIL highlights the inherent advantages of Indian airlines, such as superior domestic connectivity and the ability to serve tier 2 and tier 3 cities with end-to-end international connections.
"A noticeable shift in spending patterns has emerged after the pandemic, as evident in the increasing inclination of Indians towards international leisure travel. "Increasing disposable incomes, easing visa requirements, growing number of airports and enhanced air travel connectivity are boosting international travel," said Manish Gupta, Senior Director and Deputy Chief Ratings Officer at CRISIL Ratings.
India's geographic location also positions it as a potential hub for international travel between the Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA), and Asia Pacific regions.
"To capitalise on the growth in international travel, Indian airlines are investing in widebody and long-range narrow body aircraft for network expansion, adding new international routes and introducing long-haul non-stop flights to key destinations, " said Ankit Kedia, Director, CRISIL Ratings.

With a 6% rise in domestic operations and a 5.1% increase in international connectivity, carriers like IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara are expanding their services.&nbsp;

Indian airlines will operate a total of 24,275 weekly domestic flights during the summer schedule starting from March 31, a nearly 6% increase compared to the year-ago period.
The number of weekly departures is 2.30% higher as against 23,732 flights being operated by the scheduled carriers in the ongoing winter schedule that ends on March 30, according to aviation regulator DGCA.
IndiGo, Air India and Vistara will operate more flights while SpiceJet will reduce departures during the 2024 summer schedule that spans from March 31 to October 26.
In the summer schedule, Indian carriers will connect 37 countries, including the US, the UK, Uzbekistan, Maldives, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The international flights will be operated from 27 domestic airports.
Domestic carriers will be operating 1,922 weekly international flights, a rise of 5.1 per cent compared to the 2023 summer schedule. In comparison to the ongoing winter schedule where the count of international weekly flights is 1,892, the increase is only 1.6 per cent.
Akasa Air, which is set to commence its overseas operations on March 28, is yet to file its schedule for international flights with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The regulator said there will be 24,275 domestic departures per week which have been finalised to/from 125 airports as per the summer schedule.
"Out of these 125 airports, Azamgarh, Aligarh, Chitrakoot, Gondia, Jalgaon, Moradabad and Pithoragarh are the new airports proposed by the scheduled airlines," the watchdog said in a release on Thursday.
The country's largest airline IndiGo will be operating 13.82 per cent more flights at 13,050 in the summer schedule, while Air India will increase its weekly departures by 4.59 per cent to 2,278.
Vistara will be operating 25.22 per cent more weekly flights at 2,324 while Akasa Air will increase their weekly domestic departures by 14.30 per cent to 903.
SpiceJet will be cutting down its weekly departures by 22.28 per cent to 1,657.
In terms of airports that will be operational during the summer schedule, Uttar Pradesh will have the maximum number at 14, followed by Maharashtra (11) and Gujarat (9).
In the international segment, Air India will operate 455 weekly flights, an increase of 5.1 per cent compared to the year-ago period.
IndiGo will have 13.5 per cent more international flights at 731 while Vistara will increase its weekly overseas departures by 50.8 per cent to 184. Air India Express' departures will rise 20.8 per cent to 371 flights.
However, SpiceJet will be reducing its international flights by 12.6 per cent to 174. In the last summer schedule, Go First was to operate 120 weekly overseas flights.
The carrier stopped flying in May 2023.
Alliance Air will operate 7 weekly international departures in the latest summer schedule compared to 4 in the year-ago period.
Air India, Air India Express and Vistara are part of the Tata Group, and Vistara is in the process of getting merged with Air India.

Goa&nbsp; based Just Udo Aviation Pvt Ltd has received air operator&rsquo;s certificate from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). With this, the firm can operate its airline Fly91.&nbsp;
The certificate is granted after the completion of all regulatory and compliance requirements. The airline in a statement mentioned that it will begin its commercial operations soon.&nbsp;
"We now look forward to commencing the sale of tickets leading to the start of commercial operations soon," managing director and chief executive officer of Fly91, Manoj Chacko said
<h3>Airline routes</h3>
Under the government's regional connectivity scheme UDAN, or Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik, the airline has been allocated its first set of routes including Sindhudurg, Jalgaon, Nanded and Agatti from Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad and Pune.

As per Mint, the regional airline currently has a fleet of two ATR 72-600 aircraft, which it leased in January from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise. The airline is identified with the code IC and aims to enhance air connectivity and tap the growing demand in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Fly91 is also the first Indian airline to use Goa&rsquo;s Manohar International Airport as its home base.
<h3>Fly91's plans</h3>
Fly91 is planning to strengthen last-mile connectivity by including 50 cities across India in its network under its five-year plan. It also aims to induct 30 aircraft into its fleet which will be based at multiple hubs across the country.
Fly91 which is India's youngest airline also has plans to make its product globally known as well. Earlier it had told Mint that it had held discussions with global as well as domestic carriers to offer its product to them in order to become a last-mile connectivity provider that can &ldquo;co-exist" with other airlines.
&ldquo;I can tell you that we are in conversation with two domestic and three international airlines, and especially the international airlines are very keen to, kind of, look at aligning our network with theirs, so that, they can connect into some of the other cities that we would potentially connect," Chacko had told Mint.
Fly19's product offering includes providing flight for a distance which would normally take 8-12 hours by road or rail to cover by offering a competitive ticket price thus improving the regional connectivity.
&ldquo;We're going to be a very warm airline, we're going to be a friendly airline. We're just going to have a one-line fare rule, that's it, you know, you buy a ticket and travel, if you cancel, you rebook, there's a particular penalty you pay and that's it, period, so its going back to the basics," Chacko had told Mint.
However, for now the company will set up its first base at the Mopa airport of Goa, followed by bases in north, west, east, and south of the country with six-seven aircraft parked at each of the bases. As per Mint, it is also exploring operations at Hindon airport, upcoming Noida International airport at Jewar, Navi Mumbai airport, and Nasik, among others.
Fly91 is led by aviation industry veteran Manoj Chacko who has nearly three decades of experience. He has worked both with large corporations as well as startups across Emirates, Kingfisher Airlines, SOTC, and WNS Global Services, among others.
Harsha Raghavan the former head of Fairfax India has also invested in Fly91. His investment firm Convergent Finance has pledged ₹200 crore as the project outlay for the upcoming airline. The airline&rsquo;s early investors also include Rajeev Chitrabhanu, founder of investment platform Magnetic.

Alaska Airlines grounded all of its Boeing 737-9 aircraft late Friday, hours after a window and piece of fuselage on one such plane blew out in midair and forced an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon.
The incident occurred shortly after takeoff and the gaping hole caused the cabin to depressurize. Flight data showed the plane climbed to 16,000 feet (4,876 meters) before returning to Portland International Airport.
The airline said the plane landed safely with 174 passengers and six crew members.
&ldquo;Following tonight's event on Flight 1282, we have decided to take the precautionary step of temporarily grounding our fleet of 65 Boeing 737-9 aircraft,&rdquo; Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci said in a statement.
Each of the aircraft will be returned to service after full maintenance and safety inspections, which Minicucci said the airline anticipated completing within days.
The airline provided no immediate information about whether anyone was injured or the possible cause.
The plane was diverted about about six minutes after taking off at 5:07 p.m., according to flight tracking data from the FlightAware website. It landed at 5:26 p.m.
The pilot told Portland air traffic controllers the plane had an emergency, was depressurized and needed to return to the airport, according to a recording made by the website LiveATC.net.
A passenger sent KATU-TV in Portland a photo showing the hole in the side of the airplane next to passenger seats. Video shared with the station showed people wearing oxygen masks and passengers clapping as the plane landed.

The Boeing 737-9 MAX involved in the incident rolled off the assembly line and received its certification just two months ago, according to online FAA records.
The plane had been on 145 flights since entering commercial service on Nov. 11, said FlightRadar24, another tracking service. The flight from Portland was the aircraft's third of the day.
Boeing said it was aware of the incident, working to gather more information and ready to support the investigation.
The Max is the newest version of Boeing's venerable 737, a twin-engine, single-aisle plane frequently used on U.S. domestic flights. The plane went into service in May 2017.
Two Max 8 jets crashed in 2018 and 2019, killing 346 people and leading to a near two-year worldwide grounding of all Max 8 and Max 9 planes. The planes returned to service only after Boeing made changes to an automated flight control system implicated in the crashes.

The survey received over 25,000 responses from air travellers located in 284 districts of India. The report noted that Indian airlines have compromised comfort, with complaints ranging from exorbitant fares, flight cancellations, delays, denied boarding, mishandled or lost luggage, significant increases in onboard food prices, undisclosed changes in boarding gates, and instances of staff displaying rude behaviour at check-in counters.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) anticipates a continued surge in passenger numbers, projecting an overall passenger growth of 371 million in the fiscal year 2023-24 and a further increase to 412 million in the subsequent fiscal year, 2024-25. However, the report stressed that this week, complaints have reached a heightened level, particularly as numerous individuals headed to airports to embark on their Christmas and New Year holidays.
The survey also revealed that 78% of respondents indicated they had faced one or more issues when flying in the last 2 years. A substantial 88% of survey participants expressed the belief that airlines based in India have been compromising on passenger comfort and engaging in cost-cutting measures over the past two years.

Moreover, there were concerns about airlines failing to share timely information, flight delays, and staff behavior both on the plane and at the airport. Overbooking and denial of boarding also drew ire.
Alarmingly, 88% of respondents believed that Indian airlines compromised on passenger comfort in the past two years, marking a significant increase from the previous year's 79%.
These findings underscore a glaring gap between the aviation regulator's oversight and the recurrent customer service shortcomings faced by travelers.

Regarding passenger traffic, Capa estimates approximately 155 million domestic and 70 million international passengers for the ongoing financial year. This marks a significant decrease compared to the 2022-23 statistics reported by the Airports Authority of India and Directorate General of Civil Aviation, which recorded 136 million domestic passengers and 57 million international passengers.
Capa India highlighted supply chain issues as a critical risk that could disrupt operations, potentially impacting the ability of major airlines to operate UDAN flights. Despite the capacity shortage, Capa observed a return to normalcy in airfares. While average fares dipped by 12.7% year-on-year in the September quarter, the consultancy forecasts a 3% yearly decrease in full-year yields. In a positive turn for India's aviation sector, domestic air traffic for September showcased a resilient recovery, surging by over 6% compared to the pre-pandemic era. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation reported a notable 18.3% year-on-year increase, totalling 12.25 million passengers for the month.
Akasa Air, India's youngest airline, demonstrated significant improvement in its operational efficiency. The carrier, which previously experienced a spike in flight cancellations during July and August, managed to reduce its cancellation rate substantially. September&rsquo;s data revealed a remarkable decline to 0.37%, a significant improvement from the 1.17% reported in August.
All airlines experienced higher capacity utilization in September, with Vistara leading the pack with an impressive 92% passenger load factor (PLF). SpiceJet closely followed with a PLF of 91.4%, while IndiGo maintained a robust PLF at 84.7%.
IndiGo continued to dominate the domestic market with a 63.4% market share, followed by Vistara at 10%, Air India at 9.8%, AirAsia India at 6.7%, SpiceJet at 4.4%, and Akasa at 4.2%. IndiGo also emerged as the most punctual airline, boasting a punctuality rate of 83.6%.
These positive trends align with a consistent monthly rise in air travel since January, with an average increase of nearly 8% compared to the pre-pandemic period. Despite the challenges posed by the grounding of Go First and high fares, India's domestic air passenger traffic hit a historic high in May, surpassing the previous record set in December 2019.
With the festival and holiday season underway, the current quarter is anticipated to witness robust demand for air travel, further bolstering the recovery of India's aviation industry. Passengers travelling with SpiceJet Airlines are facing delays in reaching their destinations due to a cash crisis. SpiceJet has been struggling to maintain its schedule. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in May, only 61% of SpiceJet flights from the country's four major airports - Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad - departed on time.
In contrast, in April, 70% of the airline's flights were on time. May and June are peak seasons for the aviation sector as people tend to travel more during this period due to school vacations. In May, there was increased demand for flights on certain routes compared to normal days, partly because insolvent Go First airline had stopped selling tickets.
 DGCA has compiled a list based on data from the four major airports in the country - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. SpiceJet operates approximately 250 flights per day.
Air India's performance in terms of punctuality has also declined. It dropped from the second position in April to the fifth position in May.
Akasa Air, which has been operational for less than a year, ranks first in terms of punctuality. 92.6% of its flights were operated on schedule. IndiGo Airlines ranks second with 90.3% of its flights being on time. Vistara ranks third with 89.5%, and AirAsia, with 84.8% of its flights on time, secures the fourth position. Air India, which ranked fifth, had 82.5% of its flights on time.
In May, there was a 15% increase in domestic passenger traffic compared to April. During this period, a total of 13.2 lakh people travelled by flight. Airlines have been struggling with a shortage of staff and aircraft since the COVID-19 pandemic. Harshvardhan, Chairman of Starair Consulting based in New Delhi, stated that the increase in the number of passengers has put pressure on airlines to expand their services.
